* BigBad: The main villain of the story, edging out Queen Chrysalis. He betrays his own family, including the cousin who loved him like a brother, and helps the enemy imprison and impersonate her to launch an invasion. When Twilight comes along, he changes his plan, pretending to befriend her to gain her trust and helps her defeat Chrysalis. Once the Changeling Queen is defeated, Jewelius points hooves at the Mane Five, Shining Armor and the princesses for not taking Twilight’s concerns seriously and prioritizing the wedding over the impending crisis. With these accusations against the heroes, he successfully usurps Celestia and steals the throne from her, banishing her, Luna, Cadance, Shining Armor, the Mane Five and Spike from Equestria. During the time they are gone, he convinces Twilight that the banished did not truly care for her, and persuades her to become his Queen, planning to use her to breed a legacy of powerful heirs, with the intention to kill her if a more powerful mare comes along, and even holds her parents captive to use as leverage in case she rejects him.

* AntiVillain: Even though she flunked out of the guard academy for being too sadistic, and takes joy in seeing Shining Armor and the Mane Five suffer, Shackle truly believes that her sadistic and unusual punishments as guard is for the greater good of Equestria, and by serving Jewelius, she is protecting her homeland. She ultimately realized that Jewelius really isn't the best pony to rule he decides to attack a town of innocent ponies simple for having ties to the Mane Six, thus leading to her HeelFaceTurn.

* AntiVillain: Even though she flunked out of the guard academy for being too sadistic, and takes joy in seeing Shining Armor and the Mane Five suffer, Shackle truly believes that Jewelius is the most fit pony to rule Equestria, and that by serving him, she is protecting her homeland. She sees she was wrong when Jewelius decides to attack a town of innocent ponies simple for having ties to the Mane Five.
* TheAtoner: Despite her HeelFaceTurn, she still willingly accepts a jail sentence with the other supporter of Jewelius.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Despite being cruel towards Shining Armor and the Mane Five, Shackle truly believes that her sadistic and unusual punishments as guard is for the great good of Equestria, and that Jewelius really is the best pony to rule. She realizes she was wrong when Jewelius decides to attack a town of innocent ponies and does her HeelFaceTurn.

* BadassBoast: Gives one to the dragons in the coliseum after they taunt Fluttershy, calling them out on her friend’s behalf.

* AdaptationalWimp: PlayedWith. She’s no less dangerous than she is in canon, but Jewelius outdoes her, making her seem wimpy by comparison. She only learns about the wedding from him, infiltrates the palace with his help, only for him to later betray and imprison her. She’s also much less powerful facing Twilight this time, as by the time they finally face off hoof-to-hoof, she no longer has the power-up to beat her.

* AssholeVictim: Jewelius finally meets his demise when he’s devoured by the Changelings whose Queen he betrayed. No one is particularly sad over his horrific fate, since it was very much deserved.

* AntiVillain: Vivian serves Jewelius’s every command out of belief that he will bring a great new age to Equestria. She is disgruntled by other ponies’ reliance on the alicorn princesses and the Elements of Harmony for peace rather than their own skills and dedication, and believes that Jewelius, a regular unicorn prince, will usher in a new era of independence and self-sufficiency for Equestrians.

* AntiVillain: Even though she flunked out of the guard academy for being too sadistic, and takes joy in seeing Shining Armor and the Mane Five suffer, Shackle truly believes that Jewelius is the most fit pony to rule Equestria, and that by serving him, she is protecting her homeland. * ArtificialLimbs: She is a Pegasus who’s right wing is completely metallic.

* BirdsOfAFeather: Twilight bonds with Jewelius over the fact that they are the only two people who express suspicion over Cadance’s behavior, and neither is taken seriously about it. Subverted as it turns out Jewelius was faking it to lure Twilight in.
