!!Russell Family
[[folder:As a whole]]
[[quoteright:1000:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oendant.png]]
[[caption-width-right:1000:From left to right: George, Lynn, Sarah]]
* BlueBlood: They are descended from Duke Warbawn (the title "duke" implies minor nobility, and to ham it in, he owns a castle). George is explicitly stated to be a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viscount Viscount]], which is also a title used in certain European countries for a noble of varying status.
* ColorCodedCharacters: Lynn is pink, Sarah is blue, George is green.
* DaddysGirl: Both Lynn and Sarah are this, as George is their only living parent. The three love cuddling together.
* DoubleInLawMarriage: [[spoiler:Both Sarah and Lynn like Arthur. However, Lynn eventually realizes that Arthur likes Sarah, and she never stood a chance anyway because of their age gap[[note]]Sarah and Arthur are 10, while Lynn is 5[[/note]], so she decides to let her beloved be happy. Meanwhile, Arthur's little brother Edward has had feelings for Lynn for a long time, and eventually confesses to her. By the end of the manga, Lynn is married to Edward and Arthur is married to Sarah]].]]
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold:
** Lynn inherited her father's golden hair, and is a wonderful human being at her core who loves making friends and caring for traumatized animals.
** Sarah is a DefrostingIceQueen variant. All her life she struggled with a chronic illness that caused her to be aloof from most people (except Arthur), but thanks to Lynn she comes out of her shell and shows a protective side to her. She stands up to Madeleine (who favours Sarah) and stops her from maltreating Lynn, and angrily colds Thomas and Mary for making her cry.
** George is a good person at his center, even if he's not around for his daughters due to his workload. [[spoiler:He refuses to marry Madeleine and clear his debts with her money because it means Lynn will go back to Japan.]]
* ImpoverishedPatrician: [[spoiler: Since George ultimately refused the ArrangedMarriage to Madeleine, which would've cleared his massive debts, Marble Mansion is sold and Sarah goes to live with Duke Warbawn while Lynn goes to live with Countess Montgomery. George is more desperate than ever to get it back and his father is very disappointed in him.]]
* MissingMom: Sarah's mother Frances is implied to have fallen victim to DeathByChildbirth, as she died soon after Sarah was born. And there's Misuzu with Lynn - though unlike Sarah, Lynn actually knew her mother.
* ParentalNeglect: George to Lynn and Sarah. Lynn sorely misses him because he's always at work and rarely ever sees her, and one of the reasons Sarah is so bitter is because she feels like he doesn't love her enough.
* RedOniBlueOni: Sarah is the blue to Lynn's red. She is much more ladylike and composed than her younger sister. This is mirrored in the Brightons, where Arthur is cool and collected, while Edward is more hot-blooded.
* SpoiledSweet: With the exception of Misuzu, all of them came from wealth and are respectful and friendly to their staff, with Lynn helping the Russell's gardener tend to the flowers and Sarah treating the sanitorium workers with gratitude. George also fell for Misuzu despite the fact that she was an ordinary Japanese civilian, choosing to love her in spite of their class differences.
* StrongFamilyResemblance:
** All the Russells have blue eyes and light, cymotrichous blonde hair (though Sarah's is straight, just like her mother's).
** George and Sarah have Duke Warbawn's IcyBlueEyes.
** Sarah is the spitting image of her deceased mother, down to the hair.
** Lynn has her father's hair colour shape. Oddly, she averts this trope with her mother, who she looks nothing like.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: George and his first wife Frances were HappilyMarried, but she died while giving birth to their first daughter Sarah. George then married Misuzu and had Lynn, but the two separated for unknown reasons. A DotingParent to her daughter, Misuzu raised Lynn alone for five years, before she lost her life in a car accident. Lynn absolutely ''breaks'' when she finds out that Misuzu died.

* TheAce: [[spoiler: By the end of the series, she's won the Lady's Crest and also saved the Russells family home, as Reynolds promised to loan her the necessary money provided she win the race]].
* AdaptationalWimp:
** In the manga, Lynn ''slapped'' Mary for shit-talking her father. In the anime this never happens.
** Lynn was prone to attacking Thomas at least once a chapter for being a {{jerkass}}, but in the anime she's more passive in the face of his bullying.
* AnimalCompanion: Lynn has a cat, Queen, and also adopts Prince after Mary maltreats him. She also befriends Leonard the squirrel and [[spoiler:Sophie leaves her with him when she departs from Isabelle's house]].
* AnimeHair: Lynn has twintails, and they're ''bigger than her head''.
* BlitheSpirit: Sarah is surprised by Lynn's optimism and admits she can't disagree with it. Lynn also carries this attitude towards her school and it's infectious to many of her classmates.
* BreakTheCutie: So many times. She doesn't take Misuzu's death well, and is also heartbroken that Sarah initially wants nothing to do with her. She endures constant humiliations and abuses in her new life in Britain, and at one point contemplates going back to Japan, had her friends not stood by her. In the second series, she's more strong-willed and persistent, and despite having her moments of weakness, vows to stray strong in the face of aggression.
* ButNotTooBlack: She doesn't look a single bit Japanese at all. Not that this stops her grandfather from discriminating against her.
* CheerfulChild: Lynn is upbeat and optimistic, and manages to face some fairly traumatizing events (death of her mother, Madeleine's abuse) with her head high.
* ChildOfTwoWorlds: She has a Japanese mother and an English father. She was raised in Japan for most of her life and was in for a culture shock once she came to Britain. The sequel manga has her retain her Japanese heritage by bringing her ([[spoiler:75% British/25% Japanese) kids to Iwate Prefecture, Japan]]).
* ChildrenAreInnocent: She knows she's hated by most people around her, either for her heritage or because she represents something they dislike, but still works to get their approval and be their friend. Case in point: she thought that she could make Sarah like her if she gave her a present, and decided to pluck the flowers she saw in the neighbouring forest to impress her. Unfortunately, that same day a rainstorm occurs and poor Lynn is knocked unconscious. Luckily, Edward saves her, brings her back to the Marble Mansion, and Sarah is taken back by what Lynn did for her.
* CrushBlush: Lynn gets one at Baron William Gruffudd, her horse-riding teacher, after he praises her horse-riding talents. EveryoneCanSeeIt, making her all the more bashful.
* TheCutie: [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lynn2.jpg Yep!]] She's adorable as she's kind and helpful.
* DubNameChange:
** In the French dub she was known as '''Gwendolyn'''.
** In the Italian dub she was known as '''Millie'''.
** In the Spanish dub she was known as '''Tina'''.
* FairytaleWeddingDress: The show runs on CostumePorn, and Lynn gets many in the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIeohbCNcBE opening]].
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Apart from her AnimalCompanion horse, Lynn also befriends a cat, birds and rabbits.
* GenkiGirl: Lynn is always positive and cheery, in contrast to Sarah who's glum. The biggest example would be when she met Mary and Thomas, and jumped up and down in excitement to see her new step-siblings...only for Mary to mock her and Thomas to pour water all over her toy rabbit. Lynn then ran away bawling.
* GirlishPigtails: She has two large poofy ones, fitting her young and adorable demeanor.
* GracefulLoser: Lynn is this to Cathy. When both girls compete for the National Qualifier, they end up with the same amount of points, and a jury is set to decide who's the winner. They decide it is Cathy, while Lynn is her backup. Lynn isn't upset at this and congratulates Cathy on her win. [[spoiler: When the girls hold a second qualifier race, Lynn finishes first while she's on Andrew's back, and Cathy and her friends follow this trope towards Lynn]].
* {{Hallucinations}}: When Lynn is out cold from the winter blizzard, she imagines that she is fighting a witch. She realizes it was all a dream when Alexandra, Edward and Arthur wake her.
* HereditaryWeddingDress: In Chapter 17 of the manga, while Lynn is staying with her maternal grandparents, they give her Misuzu's FairytaleWeddingDress. Lynn tries it on, and it amazed at how pretty it is. Misuzu's mother explains that they never accepted their daughter's marriage to George, and they regret it to this very day, so the two got married in a small church where they were the only attendees. The dress is a TragicKeepsake since Misuzu is now deceased.
* KindHeartedCatLover: One of her many friends is a kitten with light beige fur and blue eyes, named Prince.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: George refuses to fully explain Misuzu's death to Lynn at first, as he believes it'll hurt her way too much. As said above, this doesn't last too long. [[spoiler: And in a KickTheDog moment, the ones who tell Lynn that her dear mom is dead... are Madeleine and her kids. (More like they drop the bomb on her not knowing that she's in the dark about it, then the kids start mocking her until a rather tearful Sarah explains what happened in a much gentler manner.)]]
* InconsistentColoring: Lynn's eyes are green on the manga cover, but in the anime, they appear red, pink and brown at several different points.
* MeetCute: Sort of. Lynn was searching for flowers and got lost, then [[DynamicEntry she saw Edward fall off his horse and on a bush near her.]] With Arthur following soon after.
* PassionateSportsGirl: Lynn decides to become a horseback rider and works hard for it. She also meets some of these in her way to sport stardom, mainly other riders and tennis players.
* PinkIsFeminine: Most of Lynn's clothes, be they overalls or ballgowns, are pink. Though, she also tends to favour red.
* ThePollyanna: Lynn tries to keep her head on her shoulders after the death of her mother, even if it's very hard, and will accept any sliver of friendship and kindness.
* ShipperOnDeck: She can see that Sarah likes Arthur, and wholeheartedly ships it, even having an ImagineSpot of them dancing while he wears a suit and she wears a ballgown. Sarah was once envious that Arthur liked Lynn more than her, but this was untrue.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: She has her father's blonde hair and her grandfather's blue eyes.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Even though her grandfather is a blatant racist, she wants to earn his approval and [[spoiler: eventually does by winning the final race]].

[[folder:Sarah Frances Russell]]
!!Sarah Frances Russell (セーラ・フランシス・ラッセル)
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Chieko Honda/Chiharu Kitaishi (Japanese), Annabelle Roux (French), Dania Cericola (Italian), Gloria Núñez (European Spanish), Nadora Eman/Reem Saadeh (Arabic), Sherwin Revestir (Tagalog)
Lynn's older half-sister, she is ten years old at the start of the series. Unlike the rambunctious Lynn, Sarah is much more calmer and pensive. Unfortunately, her health is delicate and she often falls ill.

[[caption-width-right:810:[[labelnote:Click here]]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sarahwedding.png[[/labelnote]] to see her in the manga, [[spoiler:on her wedding day]]]]

* AdaptationalNiceGuy: In the manga, Sarah was even meaner to Lynn and declared that she hated crybabies when Lynn cried into her arms after hearing about Misuzu's death. In the anime, this is changed to Sarah is instantly comforting to Lynn, and she even stands up to Thomas and Mary's bullying sometimes.
* AloofBigSister: She doesn't like Lynn at first and rejects all her attempts to get close to her. Though she eventually warms up to her and the two become close friends.
* BabiesEverAfter: [[spoiler: Sarah and Arthur are revealed to be HappilyMarried with kids in the ''Lady!!'' sequel manga]].
* BetaCouple: Sarah clearly likes Arthur, who was her OnlyFriend before Lynn arrived.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Sarah CannotSpitItOut at Arthur. At one point she expresses jealousy that Arthur may like Lynn, but he's actually been in love with her for years.
* CrushBlush: [[spoiler:In the manga, this is how she reacts to Arthur's wedding proposal. [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sarah2.png See here]].]]
* DefrostingIceQueen: Sarah started out as someone who hated Lynn and viewed her as a thorn in her side, before realizing that Lynn had nothing but goodness in her heart and didn't intend anything bad towards her. Thus, she became a close friend of Sarah's, second to Arthur.
* DelicateAndSickly: Her constitution isn't the best, and at one point she fainted to the point of needing to be sent to a sanatorium. [[spoiler: This also plays into one of the reasons Duke Warbawn wants George to marry Madeleine - with her, he can at least ensure a proper heir for the Russells.]]
* EveryoneHasStandards: She's nothing less of cold to Lynn, but she can't stand Madeleine's mistreatment of Lynn and it pushes her to be a better sister to her.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Wears her hair in pigtails later in the series, as if to match with Lynn.
* GetOut: During her first day at Marble Mansion, Lynn wanders into Sarah's room and gets this as a response. This also colours her first impression of Lynn as an attention-stealing little brat.
* GreenEyedMonster:
** Sarah rejects Lynn at first because she fears that, since Lynn is much more of a GenkiGirl while she's a sickly ShrinkingViolet, she'll win over everyone's affections and Sarah herself will be all alone. She gets over it rather soon, however.
** In another episode, it's revealed that Sarah is jealous of Lynn because she never got to know her own mother before she died. To remedy this, Lynn finds a score that used to belong to her mother, and presents it to her.
* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler:In the manga, Arthur proposes to Sarah, and they end up married.]]
* HiddenDepths: Sarah is a skilled flutist. She sometimes plays it for her grandmother.
* IcyBlueEyes: Sarah has ice-coloured eyes and is closed off and aloof to everyone. She doesn't want Lynn's friendship, and her only friend for most of her life was Arthur.
* InsecureLoveInterest: Sarah has a cynical view of the world in general and feared that Arthur didn't love her anymore because he would hang out with Lynn. [[spoiler: Arthur was actually in love with her all along, but unable to spit it out]].
* LonelyRichKid: Sarah is the oldest child of the Russells, but is confined to her bed because of her sickness. [[spoiler: The sequel manga reveals that she grew up to be a healthy woman and had kids with Arthur]].
* TheResenter: At first, she despised Lynn, thinking the little girl was there to steal her father's attention from her, even going so far as to reject any presents Lynn gave her. Thankfully, she grows out of this attitude once she gets to know Lynn better.
* SignificantWardrobeShift: During TheBigRace, she wears pink instead of her usual blue - a.k.a, Lynn's colour.
* TragicKeepsake: Her mother died when she was young, and all Sarah has of her is her flute.
* TrueBlueFemininity: In contrast to Lynn, who always wears pink, Sarah wears a lot of blue, be it her bow, blouse or accessories.
* {{Tsundere}}: Sarah starts as a non-romantic Type A to Lynn, acting cold to her at first out of fright and envy.

* BigFancyHouse: The Marble Mansion is the collaterel for the debt; if he can't pay it off he'll lose it.
* CartwrightCurse: Every woman he ends up marrying suffers a cruel and horrible fate - his first wife died of an illness and his second one was killed in a car accident. [[spoiler: Inverted in the manga where he dies after marrying Madeline.]]
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: He cares for Lynn and Sarah but made a series of poor financial choices and is in some deep debt. He's always away from home because he's trying to work them off.
* GoldDigger: [[spoiler:George is pressured into becoming this via marrying Madeleine Waverly. This is despite the fact that he doesn't love her and would rather earn money the honest way instead.]]
* GoodIsDumb: It apparently never occurs to him that Madeleine will never accept Lynn as part of the ducal house.
* GoodParents: Ultimately. [[spoiler: He despises Madeleine, but when he is told that the only way his father, the Duke, will accept Lynn is if he accepts her marriage proposal, he relents. Lynn is horrified by this and decides to reside in Japan permanently with her grandparents, hoping that her father won't marry the baroness and make Sarah sad. Edward finds out, and begs Lynn to stay, and even Arthur and Sarah rush to the airport to stop her. Once George hears of this, he breaks down and decides not to marry her, because he loves Lynn and can't bear the thought of living without her.]]
* MalignedMixedMarriage: [[spoiler: The Duke did NOT want George to marry Misuzu because she was a Japanese woman and he was white. Hence why he refuses to meet Lynn.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: He considers not being there for Lynn after her mother's death to be his biggest regrets.
* ParentsAsPeople: For a good chunk of the series, George leaves Lynn and Sarah in the care of their many maidservants and vulnerable to Madeleine's abuse, because he's worried about losing his wealth and assets. It's not like he wanted to, but he worries that their welfare will be impacted if he doesn't. He considers his neglect to them one of his greatest failures, and the second season has him realize what he's done and try to make up for it by being involved in both their lives.
* RichInDollarsPoorInSense: So much that his father is disappointed in him and [[spoiler:proposes an ArrangedMarriage to Madeleine to save the family's reputation.]]
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:Dies in Chapter 47 of the manga, shortly after having a son with Madeleine.]]
* WorkOffTheDebt: The main reason he's barely active in his daughters' lives is because he has to manage his large amount of debt. As almost everyone he turns to refuses to help him, [[spoiler: his father pressures him further to marry Madeleine and have her pay it off]].

* DyingWish: She accepted she was going to die and told Lynn she wanted her to become a ProperLady.
* HowDadMetMom: In the manga, it's stated that George met Misuzu when he travelled to Japan for work, and Misuzu worked as his interpreter because he didn't speak Japanese.
* SacrificialLion: Her death is vital to the plot, and pushes Lynn's desire to be a ProperLady. It also makes Madeleine's attacks on her more bitter.
* SecondLove: To George after Frances, Sarah's mother.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: She dies in a car accident in the first episode. George tries to hide it from Lynn, but Madeleine tells her it outright.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Misuzu was stated by both Lynn and George to have been a beautiful, traditional Japanese woman.

* CommonalityConnection: She met George in university and they bonded over their shared love of horse riding.
* PosthumousCharacter: Has been long dead by the start of the series.

* CanonForeigner: He wasn't present in the manga.
* CoolHorse: Lynn adores him and thinks he's the coolest horse in the whole world.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Andrews used to belong to Vivian, who frequently abused him. When Lynn met him, Vivian was planning on putting him down, but Isabelle bought him to make her happy. Andrews has trouble functioning normally and often freaks out at the sight of Vivian and squirrels.

!!Waverly Family
[[folder:As a whole]]
* AdaptationalJerkass: [[spoiler: In the manga, despite all the horrible things they did, the Waverlys had some humanizing moments and the Waverly children eventually got along with Lynn. Lynn and Mary even remained good friends 20 years later in the sequel manga. In the anime, all three are purely unlikable and driven by greed, and eventually get out of the Russell's lives after George refuses to marry Madeleine and Lynn wins the Lady's Crest. Also, see {{Flanderization}} below.]]
* AristocratsAreEvil: Madeleine's only concerns are her image and her wealth, and she harshly treats anyone who goes against this, while taking sides with Thomas and Mary [[no]] [[TheBully matter]] [[BadPeopleAbuseAnimals what]]. [[spoiler: In the second season, Mary repeatedly abuses her power as Victor Reynold's granddaughter to bar the Russell family from gaining funds and money they rightfully have a claim to, and when she's found out, Victor is so enraged he scolds her publicly.]]
* BadPeopleAbuseAnimals: Thomas repeatedly antagonizes Alexandra, the Brighton's horse, while Mary kicks her cat Queen when she finds her annoying. Lynn feels sorry for Queen and decides to show kindness to her, causing Queen to leave Mary and welcome Lynn as her new owner.
* BlendedFamilyDrama: Lynn, Mary and Thomas do not get along at all, with the Waverly siblings constantly setting her up to be bullied or humiliated. Madeleine also blames Lynn for George's aversion to her and tries to send her back to Japan. [[spoiler: This trope is played straight in the manga where George and Madeline eventually married, and Lynn and the Waverly siblings fought one another even more now that they were part of a blended family, but in the anime George refuses Madeleine and the Waverlys eventually leave the Marble Mansion.]]
* BlueBlood: Averted. Madeleine's title is ''Baroness'' Waverly and she comes from wealth but she isn't of blue blood.
* BribingYourWayToVictory: A variant of this trope occurs in the sixteenth episode. Sarah enters a painting competition, and decides to paint Lynn. Mary hears of his and also decides to enter, painting Madeleine. Mary sees that Sarah is way more talented to her, so Madeleine tries to (unsuccessfully) bribe the judges and Thomas replaces Sarah's easel with a blank canvas when she's not looking. Thankfully, Arthur retrieves the painting just in time for the competition and Sarah wins.
* TheBully: They physically and emotionally antagonize Lynn, from insults, hitting her, and breaking her things.
* DisappearedDad: In the manga it's mentioned Madeleine's the widow of Baron Cotton, but in the anime this is never touched upon.
* {{Flanderization}}: All three are hit with this ''hard''.
** In the manga, there were some moments that showed Madeleine had some humanity in her and cared for her kids. In the anime this was cut out.
** In the manga, Thomas was a little {{Jerkass}} who eventually decided to be kinder to other people. In the anime, he's nothing but a cruel bully to Lynn.
** In the manga, while Mary was still a ManipulativeBitch, she wasn't an [[spoiler: [[AcademicAlphaBitch obsessed rival]] fixated upon tearing down her rivals for the Lady's Crest, nor did she lord her grandfather's power over the Russells. The anime also makes Mary the DragonAscendant of the final arc, who personally formulates the downfall of the Russell family.]]
* GoldDigger: Of sorts. It's implied Madeleine is eyeing George because he comes from BlueBlood and owns the Marble Mansion.
* HateSink:
** Madeleine doesn't hide her contempt for Lynn, and endlessly screams abuses her, while treating Thomas and Mary as if they can do no wrong. [[spoiler: She's also the reason Lynn was driven to leave England in the first season's GrandFinale]].
** Mary is a ManipulativeBitch who frequently bullies Lynn to petty degrees, like taunting her by taking her bunny, and revels in seeing Lynn [[BreakTheCutie break]]. Though she has pangs of guilt sometimes, [[spoiler: what cements her as the vilest of the three is when she tries to coax the Russells to bankruptcy in the GrandFinale using her grandfather's influence. Mary is also so petty that she sabotages her own friends so they can't win the Crest, being driven by her own envy towards Lynn]].
** Thomas frequently bullies children that are way smaller than him (even physically harming them through his BB gun), and is also terrible to the staff of Marble Mansion. He has an entitled attitude towards women, especially Patricia, who lives in fear of his stalking.
** Did we mention the time they implied Lynn was responsible for Misuzu's death?
* InconsistentSpelling: Is it '''Waverly''' or '''Wavebury'''? It's likely Waverly because that's a more common name.
* InTheBlood: Like their mother, Mary and Thomas are stuck-up, selfish and rude. She also defends them no matter what.
* {{Jerkass}}: All three. Madeleine is a RichBitch who maltreats her house staff and routinely abuses 5-year-old Lynn, Thomas gets a rise out of being violent towards the weak, and Mary is an AttentionWhore obsessed with being the best and putting others down, on top of also being a snob like her mother.
* KidsAreCruel: Thomas and Mary are children. Their rap sheet includes heavily injuring toddler-age children, abusing their own pets, abusing other people's pets, repeated theft and causing Lynn hypothermia.
* MealTicket: Invoked. Madeleine Wavebury is a VERY rich minor noblewoman who ''badly'' wants to socially ascend, and George is a high-ranked ImpoverishedPatrician. Naturally, [[spoiler: Duke Woburn (who never forgave him [[MalignedMixedMarriage for marrying a now-deceased Japanese woman]] and [[ButNotTooForeign fathering Lynn with her]])]] encourages him to see Madeleine as this and go the GoldDigger way. [[spoiler: It doesn't happen in the end, but at a high price: George's BigFancyHouse must be sold out to clear the family debts.]]
* NeverMyFault: When Thomas shoots Alexandra with his gun, Edward ends up covered in injuries while Lynn escapes unharmed. Madeleine insists that Lynn was behind it, and punishes her by locking her in the attic. When Sarah and Arthur find Thomas' bullet and prove it was his doing, she is angry and punishes Lynn by locking her up again.
* ObviouslyEvil: When Mary and Thomas are introduced, the camera pans to the smug, sinister expressions on their faces while a menacing {{Leitmotif}} plays in the background.
* PutOnABus: At the start of season two, they moved to UsefulNotes/{{Switzerland}} [[spoiler: before returning for the finale]].
* RaisedByGrandparents: Sort of. The Waverly children have a mother but no father, and their grandfather is an UnclePennybags who's involved in their lives and indulges their every whim.
* {{Sadist}}: It's InTheBlood, as Madeleine aggressively flaunts her title and status, while Mary and Thomas enjoy bullying people for fun. Lynn's NiceGirl attitude makes it easier for them to do so.
* SpoiledBrat: Thomas and Mary. Whenever anyone tries to warn Madeleine of their behaviour, she won't listen. In one episode Madeleine hires a tutor, but the kids, not wanting to study, play pranks on her and blame Lynn. When it's proven they are the culprits, Madeleine refuses to listen and insists Lynn is the problem.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Madeleine and Mary have bubblegum-pink hair. Thomas and Victor also have the same hair colour and eyes.
* VillainDecay: [[spoiler: In the second series, Madeleine and Thomas make a few appearances but don't have that much of a big role, whereas Mary becomes a DragonAscendant]].

* AbusiveParents: She thinks Lynn is the reason why George won't marry her. She abuses her in all ways except physical/sexual, from telling her that her presence makes her, George and Sarah miserable and making her feel horrible just for existing. She also has Lynn locked in the attic regularly when she's done nothing wrong.
* BerserkButton: Just the mere ''mention'' of Lynn's name within earshot of her makes Madeleine seethe.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Madeleine deliberately presents an angelic image of herself to Duke Warbawn so that he'll think she's a good fit for George. When she pays off some of his debts, the Duke is impressed and gives her authority over the Marble Mansion, and she uses her newfound authority to make Lynn's life even worse than it already is.
* DubNameChange: Madeleine became '''Maudlin''' in the Italian dub.
* EducationMama: She hires a tutor for her children in an episode, though she's later fired for complaining that Thomas and Mary maltreated her. In a future episode, it's revealed that Mary attends a very prestigious school where she's a skilled tennis player.
* EntitledToHaveYou: She wants George all to herself, even going as far as to repeatedly bar Lynn from seeing him no matter what.
* EvilIsPetty: The root of why she treats Lynn the way she does. She blames Lynn for everything under the sun while taking no responsibility for her own actions, repeatedly bars her from seeing her father and sister to the point of specifically telling the staff to forbid Lynn from seeing them on different occasions, constantly goads her kids into sabotaging Lynn's happiness at every opportunity, and manipulates both George and Richard to do the same. All because she wants George all to herself and can't stand the idea of Lynn having his attention even though she's one of his biological children.
* GracefulLadiesLikePurple: Guess what colour most of her outfits are? It also fits when you remember that purple is a colour associated with royalty, and Madeleine is a RichBitch.
* InconsistentSpelling: Is it '''Madeleine''' or '''Magdalene'''?
* KickTheDog: She flat-out tells a five-year-old Lynn that she hates her and that everything would be better if she weren't around, which convinces Lynn to return to Japan and stay with her grandparents until middle school. Madeleine continues her dog-kicking even when Lynn just wants to see her sick father and new baby brother.
* ParentalFavouritism: Madeleine deliberately makes sure to give preferential treatment to Sarah, Duke Warbawn's favourite, to get into his good books.
* RichBitch: She is as privileged as she is cruel and petty.
* SmugSnake: She's positive she'll marry George and is shocked when she finds out she won't.
* NouveauRiche: Madeleine is only a minor noble, and fits here rather well. She wants to marry George to become a full-blooded noblewoman and acts as if Marble Mansion is already hers. [[spoiler: They eventually do marry in the manga.]]
* WickedStepmother: Madeleine is George's would be-girlfriend and prospect third wife. She not only spoils her kids rotten, but she treats Lynn like shit and is only kind to Sarah because she wants the Duke's favour.

* AdaptationalJerkass: Believe it or not, in the manga he was friendlier to Lynn and they kept in contact when she went to Japan. In the anime this is cut out and his cruel bastard antics are exaggerated.
* BadLiar: Whenever he's in trouble, Thomas always lies and says he didn't do it, even when it's obvious that he did.
* BigBrotherBully: Frequently tormented Lynn, both when they were younger and in the present day, whether it be shooting her with his pistol or threatening her with violence.
* CorruptedCharacterCopy: [[spoiler: Only in the anime version]]. Think [[Manga/CandyCandy Neil Leagan]], but with the terrible characteristics cranked up. While Neil was horrible to Candy, most of the time he was doing it on the whims of his sister. Thomas, however, genuinely hates Lynn.
* IncestSubtext: In the manga, he has an obsession with a woman named Patricia Rogers, who looks a lot like his step-sister Lynn. Thomas even once mistakes Lynn for Patricia and pounces on her, and others mention that Lynn looks like Patricia.
* KickTheDog: He shoots Alexandra with his BB gun, causing Lynn and Edward, who were riding her, to get thrown off and severely injured. Sarah is absolutely livid when she finds out.
* StalkerWithACrush: In the manga, he has a crush on a woman named Patricia Rogers, and it's frequently mentioned that she tries to avoid him because he's so persistent in his affections for her that it borders on annoying.
* WouldHurtAChild: He threatens Lynn and Edward with violence on multiple occassions, and this is when they're ''five''.

* AcademicAlphaBitch: Mary's specialty is playing tennis. She views everyone else as her enemy in the race to get the Lady's Crest. [[spoiler: Though, by the end of the series, she's publicly disgraced for sabotaging Vivian by cutting the reins of her horse. Even her own grandfather, Victor Reynolds, is disgusted at her for this]].
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange:
** In the manga, Mary had a crush on Arthur, behaved like a ClingyJealousGirl over him and [[spoiler:wept heavily when he announced his marriage to Sarah]]. In the anime this is cut out and she's more level-headed, but the scenario where she blackmails him into being her date for the party is kept in.
** [[spoiler: In the manga, Mary is a mere bully who enjoyed getting reactions out of Lynn, and would turn into a crybaby over petty things. In the anime, her ManipulativeBitch tendencies are amped up to the point she becomes the final villain of the series. Using TheChessmaster skills on par with [[Film/TheDarkKnight The Joker]] and [[Film/Oldboy2003 Lee Woo-jin]], Mary formulates a plan to get {{revenge}} on Lynn and the Russells for rejecting her mother, and ''nearly gets away with it too''. Had this not been a {{shojo}} anime, Mary would be in jail for some of the things she's done.]]
* AlphaBitch: [[spoiler: While in the first season, Mary was more of TheBully, by the second-season she's become a full-fledged AlphaBitch. She's obsessive, tyrannical, passive-aggressive and ready to throw her own friends under the bus for her own goals. Mary often plays the victim in front of her grandfather, Victor, to make him feel sorry for her and enforce his wrath on anyone who's hurt her. She leaves out that in most times, the people she asks him to penalize haven't done anything wrong, or were provoked by her first. Victor is moved by Mary whenever she pulls out the waterworks, but when he finds out that she's a chronic liar all along, he's enraged, scolds her and tells her she's been spoiled.]]
* ArchEnemy: Lynn Russell. She initially looked down on her as a step-sister and would play pranks on her. [[spoiler:When George ended his engagement to Madeleine, Mary believed Lynn was the reason why (not realizing that George would have never married Madeleine anyway) and decided to punish them by ruining the reputations of the Russells in any way she can]].
* BadPeopleAbuseAnimals: Mary often maltreats her cat, Prince, shocking Lynn as she is a FriendToAllLivingThings.
* TheDragon: Mary assists her cruel mother in trying to get rid of Lynn, likely because she views her as competition, and is irked at not being the sole child of the house (apart from Thomas). With Sarah out of the way thanks to being at a sanitorium, Lynn is the prime target for her bullying and harassment.
* TheChessmaster: Mary is brilliant at manipulation, [[spoiler: and as George scrambles to salvage the Marble Mansion, Mary exploits the Waverly's business connections to make sure he doesn't get it while also setting up Lynn to take the fall for Vivian's accident]].
* ClingyJealousGirl: In the manga, she had a crush on Arthur, and hated that [[spoiler:his heart belonged to Sarah]]. This is cut out of the anime.
* DragonAscendant: [[spoiler: Near the GrandFinale, Mary reveals that she's been planning her {{Revenge}} on Lynn by herself, starting with destroying her chances at getting the Lady's Crest and then cutting off support the Russells receive from everyone else]].
* DragonWithAnAgenda: Twice.
** [[spoiler: First on the list is punishing Lynn for "ruining" her mother's engagement to her father, when in reality her mother was such an [[RichBitch unpleasant woman]] it drove him away.]]
** [[spoiler: Mary manipulates Lynn via promising to help her get [[BigFancyHouse Marble Mansion]] back — but only if she relinquishes her bid to the Lady's Crest that both of them want so badly.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: [[spoiler: She feels horrible after stealing the Lady's Key from Lynn and puts it back, but by then Lynn has ventured out in the snow to look for it and faints from the atmosphere. Luckily, Alexandra breaks out of her stable and shows Edward and Arthur where she is]].
* EvilIsPetty: She tries to scapegoat Lynn for ''everything'' she does, because it's easy to. [[spoiler: In the second season, this takes an extreme turn as she's willing to change schools just to get {{Revenge}} on Lynn]].
* EvilRedhead: She has red-pink hair and is the [[DragonAscendant primary antagonist]] for the second half of the season.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: : [[spoiler: By season 2, she's shortened her hair to look more like Madeleine, hinting at her role as the DragonAscendant]].
* FatalFlaw: Mary's two fatal flaws are {{Greed}} and Envy.
** [[spoiler: It's implied she wants her mother to marry George so she can have the noble title of the Russells, despite already being a RichBitch herself. When her marriage attempt, fails, she turns into a GreenEyedMonster]].
** [[spoiler: Mary desires the Lady's Crest despite not being a student of Saint Patrick's and only joining to one-up Lynn. Despite this, she become so desperate for it that she sabotages Vivian, ''the only other person that can outdo Lynn''.]]
* FieryRedhead: Has reddish-pink hair and a burning desire to destroy Lynn's happiness whatever the cost. In one episode her face even fades to fire as she thinks of Lynn.
* {{Foil}}: [[spoiler: Both Mary and Sophie antagonize Lynn out of an agenda for their mothers and feel guilt for it, but while Sophie eventually turns against her mother, Mary believes that she must do more for her, and becomes the DragonAscendant of the final arc]].
* GreenEyedMonster: [[spoiler: She's jealous of Lynn and Vivian because she views them as competition for the Lady's Crest, so she manipulates both of them into refraining from it. Had she let her envy go just once, she would have seen Vivian crush Lynn]].
* TheHeavy: [[spoiler: In the second season, she drives most of the misery Lynn and George have as punishment for rejecting her mother, from having her grandfather stop George from receving money to turning Lynn's friends against her at school. She even ruins Vivian's chances at being an Olympian just so she can pin it on Lynn, which ends up motivating Lynn further to win the Lady's Crest]].
* {{Jerkass}}: [[spoiler: Returns to the cast in episode 22 of the TV series, after having spent some years in a Swiss BoardingSchool. A mere SpoiledBrat in the first part, she becomes Vivian's DragonWithAnAgenda and TheRival to Lynn, as well as a ''massive'' SmugSnake.]]
* JerkJock: Condescending, rude, selfish and a complete prick to Lynn. When she realizes George isn't home and Madeleine is, her bullying of Lynn turns from subtle to outright aggressive. Because she is protected by Madeleine, Mary has never faced consequences for her behaviour and repeatedly gets away with taunting her. Mary is also skilled at tennis, and implied to be incredibly physically strong at times because of how easily she carries heavy objects.
* ManipulativeBitch:
** In one episode, Madeleine hires a tutor for Mary and Thomas. Mary doesn't want to study, so they play pranks on the tutor and blame it on Lynn, who Madeleine punishes. When the tutor finds proof that Lynn is innocent and it was actually Mary and Thomas, she tells Madeleine. However, Madeleine refuses to believe her and asserts Lynn did it, firing her afterwards and letting Mary and Thomas go scott-free.
** [[spoiler: Mary and Vivian host a party and invite all their mutual acquaintances. Mary blackmails Arthur by saying that if he doesn't come as her date, she'll reveal to Lynn that [[AwfulTruth George's deal to secure funding for the mansion has failed]]. Arthur is crestfallen but accepts, and Mary takes pride in knowing that Lynn will be hurt to see her with her friend. Edward declines the invitation but when Phillip tells him Arthur is arriving as Mary's date, he's furious (knowing that Mary has been a mean bully to Lynn ever since she started living at the Marble Mansion) and punches his brother in front of everyone.]]
** [[spoiler: Mary knows that Vivian likes Edward. She tells her she should compete against Lynn in a horse race to impress him. Then, Mary tells Lynn that George is unable to buy the Marble house and if she wins the race against Vivian, she can receive monetary compensation from insurance. In actuality it's all an elaborate scheme to get rid of both the girls in the race towards the Lady's Crest - she secretly cut the reins of Vivian's horse, while making it look like Lynn did it. Mary then insists Edward and the Principal arrive at the scene; upon seeing Edward Vivian is distracted and falls off her horse. Lynn is blamed for sabotaging her]].
* MisplacedRetribution: [[spoiler:Mary blames Lynn for why her mother's marriage with George fell through and strives to make her life hell because of it. She's likely aware George never loved Madeleine, but was hoping to get her hands on his title and prestige]].
* PassionateSportsGirl: At her old boarding school, Mary excelled in tennis, and [[spoiler:at Saint Patrick's, she impresses her classmates with her tennis skills]].
* PinkIsFeminine: She has a bright pink bow in her hair, and also wears a dress with a pink collar.
* TheRival: In the manga, Mary was this to Sarah because they both had crushes on Arthur, and were toe-to-toe when it came to their skills. In the anime, this is retained to Mary and Sarah being rivals at painting, where Sarah's skill level far exceed's Mary's. [[spoiler: In season two, Mary comes to view all of Saint Patrick's as this for the Lady's Crest, particularly Vivian and Lynn, and decides she'll knock them out of the game [[EtTuBrute no]] [[{{blackmail}} matter]] [[AcademicAlphaBitch what]]]].
* SoreLoser: [[spoiler: When she loses the tennis match to Catherine, she spends the rest of the day sobbing into her pillow.]]
* StupidEvil: [[spoiler: Had Mary not sabotaged Vivian, Vivian would have beat out Lynn for the Lady's Crest, thus preventing Lynn from honouring her promise to Victor and letting the Russells fall into poverty.]]
* StylishSunhats: [[spoiler:After spending a whole semester sabotaging Lynn, Mary dons a cherry-red sunhat with a golden ribbon [[GemEncrusted has a red gemstone]] to hold it in place as she's going to return to Switzerland. However, her grandfather stops her, and scolds her.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler: Losing the match to Catherine and watching Lynn succeed drove Mary on the edge and she swore to make Lynn suffer.]]

* DeclarationOfProtection: Sort of. Before George leaves the Marble Mansion, he asks that Edward and Arthur take care of his daughters, and they comply.
* DoubleInLawMarriage: [[spoiler: Sarah ends up with Arthur and Edward ends up with Lynn, the latter even having a pair of twins in the sequel manga]].
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Compared to Arthur, who is polite and down-to-earth, Edward is reckless, hot-tempered, and often lets his emotions get the better of him.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Both Arthur and Edward have blonde hair and do their best to help Lynn and Sarah navigate life in the Marble Mansion with George's departure. When Lynn ran away from home for the first time, Arthur brought her back and carried her as she was knocked out, and when Lynn was beung bullied, Edward stood up for her and tried to get them punished. They both remained friends with the Russells in adulthood [[spoiler: as Lynn married Edward and Sarah married Arthur]].
* RedOniBlueOni: In a similar vein to Lynn and Sarah, the younger Brighton sibling is louder and passionate, while the older one is more reserved and polite.
* ShipTease:
** Lynn/Edward: Edward affectionate Lynn a "shrimp", and a lot of his teasing is in an tender manner. He is very protective of Lynn and hates people that bully her, to the point he [[spoiler:punched Arthur for bringing Mary as a date to the ball (not knowing that he was blackmailed)]]. Edward also tends to be very klutzy around Lynn, as if he's distracted by her presence. Lynn also frequently blushes around Edward and has {{Imagine Spot}}s of him. [[spoiler: By the end of the anime, this is canon, and the sequel manga reveals that Lynn and Edward had children]].
** Lynn/Arthur: Lynn has a PrecociousCrush on Arthur and often dreams of him. In the OP of ''Hello! Lady Lynn!'', Arthur appears, riding his horse, and picks up Lynn. Also, after Mary and Thomas bully Lynn and throw water all over her stuffed rabbit, she cries in Alexandra's stable, and when she sees Arthur and Edward, she calls Arthur's name as she runs into his arms. Sarah also expresses jealousy that Arthur may like Lynn more than her, even though this isn't true. Lynn/Arthur fell to ShipSinking as [[spoiler: Arthur reveals he always loved Sarah]]. Lynn accepts this, and moves on to pursue [[spoiler:Edward]].
** Sarah/Arthur: Arthur was Sarah's OnlyFriend for years, and when she sees Lynn hanging out with him she becomes instantly envious. She wishes to spend time with him, but can't because of her condition. This doesn't stop Arthur from going to the Russell's house and paying her visits from time to time. In the GrandFinale, Sarah stares at a pool and thinks of Arthur. [[spoiler: Just then, Arthur appears and tells her he's always loved her]].
* RacistGrandpa: In the sequel manga, it's revealed that the boys have an aunt from America who dislikes Lynn because of her Japanese origins.
* ShipperOnDeck: Arthur ships Lynn/Edward, whike Edward ships Arthur/Sarah, [[spoiler:being very happy for them once they're an OfficialCouple]].
* SiblingTriangle:
** Both Lynn and Sarah like Arthur. Lynn constantly has {{imagine spot}}s of him, while Sarah remembers his kindness towards her and how he was her OnlyFriend for years. Lynn later discovers that Arthur has feelings for [[spoiler:Sarah]], and accepts them, instead going for his little brother Edward.
** Exploited by Mary in one episode. She knows Sarah has feelings for Arthur, and tries to turn her against Lynn by insinuating that he'll leave her for Lynn. By then Sarah has gotten over being an InsecureLoveInterest (and knows Arthur doesn't like her), so it doesn't work.

* StrongFamilyResemblance:

* AdaptationalWimp:
* DubNameChange:

* GreenEyedMonster:

* HateSink:
* RaisedByGrandparents: Sort of.
Family]]
*[[Characters/LadyTheWaverlyFamily

* WoundedGazelleGambit: He harasses a maid until she slaps him, before running to Madeleine about how he's a victim. As she berates the maid, Thomas and Mary leer maliciously at her.

* AdaptationalPersonalityChange:
* DragonWithAnAgenda: Twice.
* ManipulativeBitch:

* CoolAunt: She is admired by Lynn for being a sweet, understanding old lady who's nothing like her racist brother, the Duke. She eagerly hugs Lynn whenever they're together, and Lynn expresses concern for her failing health.
* CoolOldLady: Countess Isabelle Montgomery is the mother that Lynn never had. She cares for her and treats her like she's her daughter.
* IllGirl: Due to her age, she has an illness, and Lynn is shocked with worry when she sees her collapse.
* RacistGrandma: Inverted. When the Russells visit the Duke's castle and he refuses to look at Lynn as his grandchild, Isabelle warms up to her, charmed by Lynn's innocence, and acts kindly to her. She does her best to get the Duke to accept her, but isn't successful.

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Yuko Mita (Japanese), Isabelle Gantz (French), Creator/MarcellaSilvestri/Creator/AlessandraKarpoff (Italian), Unknown (European Spanish), Jumana Al-Tuwal (Arabic), Charvie Abeletes (Tagalog)

Hailing from France, Sophie is a distant niece of Countess Montgomery's late husband.

* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler: Sophie is subject to constant emotional abuse by her mother and used as a tool for her manipulation towards Isabelle. She often calls her insults and uses a harsh voice whenever talking to her, and it's clear she doesn't love her like a proper mother should.]]
* AnimalCompanion: Sophie has a pet squirrel named Leonard. He functions as her MoralityChain and encourages her to break away from her [[spoiler: abusive mom's influence]].
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She pretends to be sweet and naive on the outside, but actually wants to disgrace Lynn (as per the Countess' orders) to get her hands on her inheritance. Thankfully, she befriends Lynn and decides not to do it.
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler: Jeanne's abuse has Sophie constantly on the verge of tears, or reduced to tears in some cases. She also breaks down when she tells the truth of her mother to Isabelle]].
* DisappearedDad: Her father is never seen in the anime. His disappearance is possibly why [[spoiler: her mother is desperate to sieze the Russell's assets - she must have taken a ''huge'' hit financially after the death of her husband]].
* DragonWithAnAgenda: [[spoiler: While Jeanne's agenda is to make sure she secures Isabelle's inheritance, Sophie's agenda is to make sure she doesn't get sent back to BoardingSchool and lives happily with the Montgomeries]].
* EveryoneHasStandards: [[spoiler:Despite what her mother told her, Sophie has doubts about harming Lynn because of her genial personality and openness. She even feels bad about trying to cut open one of her horse's saddles, and decides not to do it after thinking about Lynn's sweet face being kind to her]].
* GoneHorriblyRight: In one episode, to disqualify Lynn from the Olympic race, Sophie scares Andrews with a squirrel while the Headmaster is watching. To her surprise, Lynn manages to tame him and get him under control. The headmaster is very impressed by Lynn.
* GreenAndMean: She wears a green dress and a yellow bow, and [[spoiler: is secretly scheming against the Russells. However, she ultimately decides not to do it and becomes a friend of Lynn in the end.]]
* LonelyDollGirl: Sophie often cuddles with a doll given to her by [[spoiler: her abusive mother]]. At a close up, it's very cleepy and unlifelike.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: In Paul's birthday episode, Sophie spends the entire party being hoity-toity to Lynn and insinuating she's dirty. Paul is finally sick of her behaviour and blurts out that he didn't want to invite her, but he did so at Lynn's request. Sophie is aghast to hear this and runs off in tears.
* RegalRinglets: Sophie's are voluminous and coily, and held by a hair bow.
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler: Mary blackmails Lynn by saying she has to withdraw from the tournament, or therwise, she'll make sure her grandfather doesn't grant George the loan needed to buy back the Marble mansion. Lynn wants to put Sarah and George's wellbeing first so she agrees. She tells this to Sophie and asks her to keep it a secret, but Sophie can't bear to see Lynn suffer in silence so she tells everyne. Edward encourages Lynn to go forward with her dreams and they all work together to expose Mary]].
* [[WellDoneSonGuy Well Done Daughter Girl]]: [[spoiler: Sophie has SEVERE issues with her mother Jeanne, who tries to use her as a pawn to inherit the Montgomery fortune and threatens to send her back to her boarding school in France if she doesn't play along, whereas Sophie only wants her mom's love and approval.]]

Though, she later realizes that she's been horrible, and in the GrandFinale of the show, Jeanne and Sophie are seen hugging as they watch Lynn win the race]].
* BeautyIsBad:[[spoiler: She is undeniably a gorgeous woman with a striking face and gossamer hair, just as she is undeniably an emotionally abusive mother who frequently drives her daughters to tears and blames her for the family's issues.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She presents herself as a sweet ProperLady to Isabelle and the Russels. Her true intentions are far viler. [[spoiler: She's a manipulative child abuser who doesn't care about her daughter. Even Madeleine never stooped that low, though she was a terrible parent in other ways.]]
* {{Expy}}: Of Madeleine. Both are single mothers with horrible children that antagonize Lynn. But while Sophie eventually made amends with Lynn, Mary continued to belittle and abuse her [[spoiler:long after George broke off his engagement to Madeleine]].
* GoldDigger: [[spoiler: She seeks Lynn's inheritance, and puts up Sophia to subject her to MaliciousSlander. She hoped that if Sophie disgraced Lynn in front of Isabelle, she would reject the girl and use her influence to hand over the Russell's estate to her.]]
* {{Ojou}}: She is very posh, dresses exquisitely, descends from a wealthy family and favours spending time with her fellow elites. She also travels by limousine, and has a valet open doors for her.
* ManipulativeBitch: [[spoiler: Jeanne explicitly ordered Sophie to debase Lynn in front of the Russells and reacted with anger when she said she didn't want to. * MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler: After Sophie cried from all the pressure and told Isabelle what was happening, Jeanne was ashamed of herself. It was to the point that she couldn't bring herself to face Sophie in person and gifted her things from afar. When Lynn and Sophie were at the stable where Andrews was born, Sophie received a beautiful mare named Florence from an anonymous gifter - it turns out this gifter was Jeanne.]]
* ProperLady: On the outside, she's a very refined and polite lady. [[spoiler: And that's where it ends, because her personality is nothing proper or ladylike]].
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: [[spoiler: Jeanne is a unnervingly realistic depiction of an emotionally AbusiveMom. She withholds affection from her daughter, uses her as a therapist that she often takes out her anger on, and sets her up as a pawn against people she dislikes. When Sophie asks an innocent question or speaks back to her, Jeanne scolds her until she gives in. Sophie is constantly reduced to tears whenever she's thinking about her.
