* BornLucky: Like Samuel B. Roberts, she has high luck of 42 after remodel, but with only 82 max luck. Again, this is due to the same reason as Sammy B.: she fought way above her weight class in a very lopsided battle off Samar [[note]]Due to the destroyers' ferocity, the IJN misidentified the ''Fletcher''s as ''Baltimore''-class heavy cruisers, while the ''John C. Butler''s were misidentified as ''Fletcher''s[[/note]], and managed to eventually win even when sunk.

* OverratedAndUnderleveled: Despite her historical showing where she ''unambiguously'' pulling of a feat rivaling or even surpassing Yuudachi, her surface combat stat is pitifully low, only barely higher than Sammy B. (which only puts her pretty much dead average in night battle power compared to other DD) even though a ''Fletcher''-class has way more firepower than destroyer escorts.
* OnlySaneMan: Johnston has some moments of this in her hourly lines, like askng Yukikaze if she's cold running around without pants. This is more prominent in fanworks.

** Her 38cm quadruple gun turret historically had very poor accuracy [[note]]due to the close proximity of the gun barrels which caused vibrations that severely affects the shell dispersion[[/note]] and serious design flaws, though these were later fixed after the war [[note]]The accuracy problem was fixed via installation of delay coils in order to reduce blast interference and aerodynamic interference between shells in-flight and the severely flawed shell hoists were completely rebuilt to bring the guns' rate of fire up to the 2 rounds per minute that was typical of other nations' battleships.[[/note]]. However, in-game even the turret's non improved version has a positive accuracy stat. This is in contrast to the Italian 381mm triple gun turret, which has a negative accuracy stat to represent the turret's historical poor accuracy.
** Her main guns is measured in the centimeter metrics system (similar to the Kriegsmarine) in-game
and as such was referred as [[https://en.kancollewiki.net/38cm_Quadruple_Gun_Mount 38cm Quadruple Gun Mount]] in accordance to the Japanese sources, even though historically, the French had used the same millimeter metrics system as the Italians.

* SuperPrototype: At the time of their commissioning, they were the biggest and fastest aircraft carriers in the world. [[note]]The Washingotn Naval Treaty allowed the United States and Japan to each convert two cancelled capital ships into 33,000 ton carriers, which was 6,000 tons larger than was allowed for newly-constructed carriers. Moreover, a [[LoopholeAbuse loophole was abused]] to add a further 3,000 tons to their displacement, by claiming that it was the result of a refit to enhance their protection against submarine attack. Lexington and Saratoga also had a better-planned conversion than their Japanese counterparts Akagi and Kaga. As a result it wasn't until the ''Essex''-class carriers, built without Treaty restrictions, that the US Navy truly surpassed the ''Lexington''-class.[[/note]] Even at the outbreak of World War II, when given AA and artillery refits, they proved able to compete even against some of Japan's newer aircraft carrier designs.

* TheGunslinger: Her ''flight deck'' looks like it is designed after the Thompson submachine gun. Aside of having the signature grips of one, she has both regular magazines and drum magazines what presumably hold her planes. But due to the size of her flight deck (and [[FiringOneHanded how she wields it]]) it goes well into {{BFG}}-tier.

In comparison, the 46cm Triple Gun Mount was rated at 3 stars as it is a craftable equipment. Currently this gun is only available as ranking rewards and reward from Winter 2016 E-1 at the highest difficulty in the original game. While it is indeed Iowa's stock equipment in ''Kancolle Kai'', obtaining her isn't exactly an easy task as she's a reward for clearing the final stage at B-rank or higher on Hard mode, which is the highest difficulty available prior to NewGamePlus[[/note]].

** To Warspite. While Warspite was the pioneer of the fast battleship concept, and also one of the oldest fast battleships built, Iowa is the last, youngest and most advanced of the fast battleship designs. Also to Kongou for the same reason (and she's even older than Warspite).

* InnocentlyInsensitive: In some of her hourlies, she refers to Yamato as the Yamato Hotel while complimenting her cooking, and gets surprised when Yamato doesn't take it well. In the 4-koma, this seems to stem from her equating the 'Yamato Hotel' epithet with 'Iowa Museum' (something Iowa doesn't have a problem with), and not quite understanding how resource-strapped Imperial Japan was in comparison to the States (which could afford to sortie Iowa and her sisters regularly).

* PrettyInMink: Her [[http://kancolle.wikia.com/wiki/Iowa/Gallery?file=Iowa_New_Year_Full.png New Year 2017 CG]] has her wear a fur scarf over her ''very'' America-themed Kimono.

* BornLucky: Even more so than Yukikaze, as she has 55 Base luck, which reaches up to ''70'' upon remodel. Capable of hitting '''109''' when fully-modernized. Considering that she had fought in World War I, including at Jutland, ''and'' survived World War II (including two hits from the same Fritz-X bombs that sank Roma), thus becoming ''the'' most decorated ship in the Royal Navy, she certainly deserved such a high luck stat. [[note]]However, all of this still didn't save the real-life ''Warspite'' from [[UndignifiedDeath getting scrapped after running aground in 1947]], despite [[DefiantToTheEnd fighting off attempts to tow her to the scrapyard]]. (Really. Her tow lines broke during a storm on the way to the scrapyard, and ''Warspite'' ran aground. Then two more tugs damaged themselves trying to pull her off the rocks. But ultimately this just led to her being scrapped on the site where she grounded instead.)[[/note]]

Iowa is the personification of the US battleship USS ''[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Iowa_(BB-61) Iowa]]''. Introduced in ''Kancolle Kai'', the spinoff game on UsefulNotes/PlayStationVita. She's a reward for clearing the final stage on ''Kai'' hard difficulty of the Vita version, and was the E7 reward in the Spring 2016 Event on the browser version.

* MusicalThemeNaming: Discussed. She clarifies to the Admiral that she was named after the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciaenidae fish]], not the musical instrument, but she notes that the drum fish was named because it sounded like a drum.

* MustHaveCaffeine: Helena, Houston, Colorado, Hornet, South Dakota, Northampton, Heywood, and Nevada mention serving coffee to the admiral in both their married secretary and hourly lines. It's both parts SeriousBusiness and a running joke that coffee is the lifeblood of the American military (since the American Civil War, at that), much like how tea is SeriousBusiness for the British military.

It's well deserved, as she was the first ''Gato'' to be completed and enter service (something she mentions herself) and survived until the present as a museum ship in Mobile, Alabama. She's credited with sinking 15 ships, among them ''Mizuho''.
