** This indecisiveness leads to his inability to balance between being a good king ''and'' a good family man, the result being that he's neither of them, largely because he tries to act as king when he should be a father, and vice versa. For example, when dealing with the infighting within his family (such as the incident at Driftmark), he tries to invoke his authority as king to put the issue to rest but ends up alienating Alicent and her children because he didn't act like a father should by reaching out to Aemond after he lost an eye. On the other end of the spectrum, he refuses to take action against Rhaenyra's transgressions because of his ParentalFavouritism.

** In the first episode, he rebukes Otto's suggestion to have Boremond Baratheon's tongue removed for his glib remark about Rhaenys losing the throne to Viserys, pointing out that "tongues won't change the succession". Years down the line, he mandates that anyone who undermines Rhaenyra's claim to the Iron Throne shall have their tongue removed.

* DeadlyScratch: Viserys contracts some manner of necrotizing disease from cutting himself on the Iron Throne, and because of that disease the various additional cuts and scratches he gets from continuing to sit on the throne [[WoundThatWillNotHeal fester instead of healing properly]], making the problem worse. By the end of his life, Viserys is a rotting, ruined shell of a man, delirious from pain and the drugs he's taking to counteract that pain.

** Lastly, there is his obsession with the Targaryen gift of prophecy. Viserys had always wanted to be a Dragon Deamer, and once had a vision that a son of his would fulfil the Song of Ice and Fire. His obsession prompts him to push Aemma to conceive a son despite said efforts only resulting in stillbirths, not to mention the physical and mental toll it has taken on her, which finally culminates in her death. Had Viserys reined in his obsession and kept Rhaenyra as his heir, his beloved wife would still be alive and he would not have to remarry, thereby preventing the Dance of the Dragons.

* BornInTheWrongCentury: He has no problem appointing his daughter as his successor, will defend his grandsons to the death while knowing full well they're bastards sired by a man not said daughter's husband, and prefers resolving conflicts with diplomacy. The man would have made a decent head of state in modern times. A shame he reigns in a patriarchal, martial medieval time.

* OnlySaneMan: Often seems like he's astounded by the depravity, recklessness, and ambition of the noblemen around him, whether it's offering up their 12-year-old daughters or 2-year-old grandsons up for marriage or trying to start an intercontinental war.

Because of DeliberateValuesDissonance, however, ''he'' comes off as the odd man out instead.
