* SinsOfTheFather: Ruthers genuinely believes tells himself (and others) that he doesn't bear [[spoiler: Joselyn's children]] any ill will. But it's very obvious that he's kidding himself. [[spoiler: Only Fossor and the Hiding Man can be said to have hurt them more than Ruthers, and that's pretty debatable.]]
* SwordOfDamocles: [[spoiler: He "beat" Joselyn by abducting her children and threatening to murder them if she didn't surrender. Then he continued to threaten Wyatt's life to keep her from telling anyone what he did.

* UnwittingPawn: Apparently zigzagged. According to [[spoiler: Sariel Moon]], Ruthers' particular brand of stubborn fanaticism actually makes him harder to manipulate than their superiors would prefer. That said, he acts exactly as they want Heretics to, right down to refusing to consider the possibility that [[HalfHumanHybrid human's can have offspring with Strangers]], [[spoiler: and their infiltrators still convinced him to attack Joselyn through her children.]]

** Honestly, this verges on IRejectYourReality, because even if her theory about who has been helping Trice was right (it's not), there could still very easily be traitors in her midst. [[spoiler: One of Joselyn's big things was recruiting Heretics from Crossroads and Eden's Garden, many of whom are still alive with their memories of her erased.]]

* KnightTemplar: She would rather [[spoiler: commit fratricide]] than even consider the possibility that Strangers can be good.
