!The Dark Guardians

A cosmic hit squad formed in response to Thanos' post-hemous revelation that he is now possessing an unknown person. The group is determined to kill any possible candidates.

!!Starfox (Eros)
Brother of Thanos with a hatred of his brother. He forms the Dark Guardians after the chaos that the reading of Thanos' will causes.

!!The Rider (Frank Castle)
An alternate future-based version of the Punisher who became the Spirit of Vengeance, Herald of Galactus and then Herald of Thanos. Powered by the forces of Hell and the Power Cosmic, he is the most powerful of the group. He was killed by his universe's Silver Surfer, but was restored to life and sent to the present of Earth-616 by Odin, essentially kicked out of Valhalla. He attempted to kill and then raise a baby Thanos, but this proved fruitless. He is present for the reading of the modern Thanos' will, and is adamant about killing whoever Thanos may be possessing.
----
* AxeCrazy: His trauma has not done good things for him; he is outright insane.
* BaitAndSwitch It was implied both on the cover of the first issue of the 2019 series and its conclusion that he would join the Guardians of the Galaxy. He does not.
* PhysicalGod: Spirit of Vengeance and Power Cosmic-wielder. Very little can actually hurt him in a non-comedic way.

!!Gladiator (Kallark)
Leader of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard and Majestor of the Shi'ar Empire.

For tropes relating to him prior to joining the Dark Guardians, see Characters/XMenRecurringCharacters.

!! Wraith (Zak-Del)
Orphaned as a child, Wraith is a Kree wanderer. As a child he was sucked into a black hole and empowered by the Exolon, becoming a member of the Nameless. After killing the Nameless' leader, he escaped his prison and aided the cosmos during the second Annihilation War, but would afterwards continue his hunt for those that killed his parents. He is present for the reading of Thanos' will, but is only aiding Starfox because he was promised information regarding dark god Knull in order to remove himself of his Exolon powers.
---
* TheBusCameBack: He only ever appeared in Annihilation: Conquest and his joining the Dark Guardians in 2019 marks his first reappearance in over a decade.
* CastingAShadow: His Exolon powers allow him to do this.
* HealingFactor: He heals very quickly and cannot die.
* ITsNotPersonal: Admits to not wanting to hurt Richard Rider, but he wants the information Starfox promised him.

An alternate universe version of Phyla, hailing from a universe where Loki is heroic. She was brought to Earth-616 during ComicBook/InfinityWars along with her universe's Moondragon, and the two are present for the reading of Thanos' will. After a chain of unfortunate events, Phyla joins the Guardians of the Galaxy alongside her girlfriend.

Formerly Captain Marvel, Phyla-Vell is the sister of the late Genis-Vell. During the Annihilation War, she gained the Quantum Bands and later adopted the Quasar name. Later still, she would adopt the name Martyr after becoming the avatar of Oblivion.
----
* AbusiveParent: Her mother was very harsh and demanding towards her, often unfavourably comparing her to her brother Genis.
%%* ActionGirl
%%* BoyishShortHair
* BuryYourGays: Killed instantly by a
* ButtMonkey: Treated with less and less respect throughout vol 2, up until .
* CoolSword: Her go-to creation when wielding the Quantum Bands. When she becomes Martyr she gets a different one, forged with death-magic, and even capable of doing the Magus some injury.
* DroppedABridgeOnHer: Phyla is unceremoniously fried instantly by Thanos in the second to last issue of vol 2, with Mantis later confirming that she found what was left of her later. As of 2017, she hasn't returned.
* EnergyWeapon: She can create many of these with her Quantum Bands.
* GreenLanternRing: Her Quantum Bands, which she eventually loses, and declines to take back when given the chance.
* HairTriggerTemper: After becoming Martyr.
* TheHeart: The most compassionate member of the team, up until she became Martyr.
* InTheHood: Consistent throughout all her outfits are hoods.
* InterspeciesRomance: Phyla, a half-kree half-eternal starts a relationship with Moondragon, a human.
* LegacyCharacter: To ComicBook/CaptainMarvell, her father, and to Quasar. She suffers a lot of self-doubt over it.
* MostCommonSuperPower: Though given she's on the same team as Gamora, it can be hard to tell.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Quasar who has energy manipulation and flight powers and certainly looks the part.
* TookALevelInDumbass: Her decisions and temper become much worse at the same time, from starting brawls in bars to holding a head of a major galactic empire hostage in front of her family. Magus implies it's all the equivalent of a desperate cry for attention, and points out that she's way in over her head.
* TookALevelInJerkass: When she became Martyr.
* UnscrupulousHero: As Martyr.

-
* TheBigGuy: Shares this with Drax.
* BigGuyLittleGuy: The big guy to Rocket Raccoon's little guy.
* CharacterisationMarchesOn: In Annihilation: Conquest and the earlier issues of the series, he was capable of saying other things than "I am Groot". During Star-Lord's miniseries, he was also a colossal jerk (think Doctor Doom, but in tree form). He mellowed out after that.
* DeusExitMachina: Generally regarded as the team's heaviest hitter, Groot was absent from the team's official foundation as he was still recovering from his sacrifice in Annihilation: Conquest. Likewise, whenever he needs to be written out for drama they simply have him make a slow recovery from a prior battle.
* TheExile: Banished from his home planet after A) killing another member of his species to defend a maintenance mammal it was brutalizing, and B) releasing a human subject that was kidnapped for scientific purposes.
* FakeKing:
* GeniusBruiser: He is apparently quite smart and eloquent, we just can't understand what he's saying. He's also got a fantastic right hook.
%%* GentleGiant
* GlassCannon: In Bendis stories he gets destroyed easily.
* HealingFactor: A very impressive one. Groot can, depending on the circumstances, regenerate lost limbs and even his entire body within seconds of being destroyed. Though going from a single splinter usually takes much longer and requires water.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Rocket.
* PlantAliens: He's an alien being resembling a walking tree.
* PokemonSpeak: "I am Groot!"
* RedBaron: Groot, King of Planet X, Ruler of All He Shades, Flora Colossus.
* Treants: Groot is a rare science fiction example of this trope, appearing as a towering, plant-like humanoid alien chiefly composed of wood. A bit of a borderline case, as he doesn't share many traits associated with this trope such as an association with forests, although he does posses some degree of control over plant life.
* VerbalTicName: I am Groot!
* WhenTreesAttack: He's a tree-like alien called the Flora colossus, with a very strong right hook.
* TheWorfEffect: See GlassCannon especially.

Part of the squad that Star-Lord leads against the Phalanx, Bug was not asked to join the Guardians at first, something he holds against Peter Quill. Eventually, he would be asked to join.

* AnimalThemedSuperbeing
* ChickMagnet: When you're able to seduce a member of the notoriously speciesist Kree, you qualify for this. It also gets him and the rest of the Guardians into trouble when he tries to flirt with Medusa. Right in front of her husband, to boot.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Bug is a goofy, wisecracking sort, but he is lethal with that staff of his.
* DeadpanSnarker: Very snarky.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Spends a lot of his time asking why he wasn't on the first choice for the team, even though he was part of the proto-Guardians from the get-go.
%%* IHaveTheHighGround
* JumpedAtTheCall: Was perfectly happy to join the team again, mainly because Rocket forgot to mention the whole brainwashing thing.
* KidAppealCharacter
* PutOnABus:
** Wasn't present during the team's founding, and it wasn't made clear where he'd gotten to.
** He was briefly in the Comicbook/MarvelNOW version of the team until he was no longer being considered for the 2014 movie. After this he promptly disappeared without any explanation and rejoined the Micronauts by the Minimum Carnage BatFamilyCrossover for ComicBook/ScarletSpider and ComicBook/Venom. As of Volume 4, it's revealed that he and some of the other former Guardians are part of a new team called the Knowhere Corps.
* RaisedByWolves: Plant aliens, at that.
* SpeaksFluentAnimal: His antennae enable communication with others bearing antennae.
* SpiderSense: He has his own version.
* SuperSenses: Has extraordinary sight, upgraded by his helmet.
* VerbalTic: "Tik".

-->"I hate cosmic stuff..."
Former sidekick to Captain America, later retired vigilante, later Guardian of the Galaxy. He was imprisoned in he Negative Zone following the Superhero Registration Act, where he led the prisoners against Blastaar. After teaming up with Star-Lord, he chose to become a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
----
* BadassNormal: Started off as this.
%%* CaptainGeographic
%%* CaptainPatriotic
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Knew what violating the Registration Act would bring on him, and didn't care, because someone needed help.
* FishOutOfWater: Jack's a street-level hero, used to dealing with people like ComicBook/CaptainAmerica, and he has a bit of trouble coming to terms with someone like ComicBook/IronMan. He's way out of his depth with the Guardians. The only reason he doesn't go home is because (as far as he knows) he's still a wanted man.
* GrumpyBear: He hates cosmic stuff.
* HandicappedBadass: Even whilst in wheelchair, Jack became the de-facto leader of the inmates of Prison 42 after the wardens abandoned the prison during the ComicBook/SecretInvasion and fought off Blastaar's forces in his attempt to gain access to the prison's portal to Earth.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Saves a girl from some thugs, gets beaten up, crippled, beaten up some more and then thrown into another universe and left to rot for his troubles.
* OnlySaneMan: Prior to joining the Guardians, Jack was imprisoned in Prison 42 located in the Negative Zone, for breaching the Superhuman Registration Act. When he joined up with the Guardians, he reacted to most of the cosmic stuff with "I hate cosmic stuff" due to his background as a street faring vigilante.
* PutOnABus: Disappeared after vol. 2, having gone back home.
* RunningGag: He doesn't like 'cosmic stuff'. Not even after it gives him his legs back.
* SuperSpeed: Not ComicBook/Quicksilver level super-speed, but faster than the human norm.
* SuperStrength: Strong enough to go up against Mr. Hyde and win. Bearing in mind, Mr. Hyde regularly fights Thor.
* ThrowingOffTheDisability: Left paralysed from the waist down following his run in with the Thunderbolts. The damage to his spine was healed using alien technology during his first visit to Knowhere.
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead[=/=]YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Blue hair, with portions dyed red and white.

Originally a test animal for the Soviet Space Program, Cosmo eventually drifted to Knowhere and would be mutated into an intelligent dog with telekinesis and telepathy. He is chief of security of Knowhere and a steadfast ally of the Guardians and other Cosmic heroes.
----
* BadassAdorable: An incredibly powerful psychic, who just happens to come in the form of a Golden Retriever / Labrador cross-breed. Even more so when he's briefly turned into a puppy, while losing none of his abilities.
* BarrierWarrior
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Incredibly friendly and good-natured, but upset him, and the fangs come out.
* CurbStompBattle: Against the Cancerverse Hulk of all people. Cosmo swiftly kills the Hulk (temporarily) by using his psychic powers to make him have a stroke.
%%* FunnyAnimal
* FurryReminder: Unlike Rocket, Cosmo isn't anthropomorphic, he's an Earth dog who's become sapient. He still enjoys squeaky toys, chasing squirrels, mentions he'd have dealt with Annihilus by going for the throat, and can't stand Rocket because he's a racoon.
%%* HealingFactor
%%* HeroicDog
* IBelieveICanFly: Using psychokinesis.
%%* MindOverMatter
* MissionControl: Starting after Secret Invasion, he helps the team out by operating the teleport controls.
* MysteriousPast: Not even Cosmo remembers how exactly he came by his powers.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: A psychic soviet space dog who is also the security chief of a space station.
* PoirotSpeak: Telepathy "Speaks" with a thick stereotypical Russian accent.
%%* PsychicPowers
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He's the head of security for Knowhere, and the only being there who doesn't try to rake the Guardians over the coals.
%%* SitcomArchNemesis: To Rocket.
* Telepathy: Being, well, a dog, this is how he communicates.
* UnexplainedAccent: His thought bubbles speak in stereotypical russian dialogue. Even though he was a regular dog by the time he was shipped into space and who hasn't even been in Russia since the 1960s.

%%* AcePilot
* AGodAmI: Has her moments
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: It resulted in her taking on The Dragon of The Moon. And even after barely winning that fight, she still remained arrogant. After several rounds of trauma and DemonicPossession, this has subsided.
* BackFromTheDead: Revived by Drax and Phyla halfway through vol 2.
* BiTheWay: With a particular fondness for the Quasars
%%* BuryYourGays
* CombatStilettos: Her team uniform is the only one to have heels.
* DemonicPossession: She has a history with this.
* ItsPersonal: Thanos killed her father, her mother and her lover. It's very personal.
* OmnidisciplinaryScientist: Doesn't come up during her time with the team, but in the past she's shown remarkable proficiencies in a lot of fields. And she's capable of keeping up with Thanos in a conversation.
* PutOnABus: Didn't come back for Vol. 3. As of Volume 4, it's revealed that she and some of the other former Guardians are part of a new team called the Knowhere Corps.
* RaisedByWolves: Raised by Mentor of the Eternals. He and Drax don't exactly get on too well, to say the least (the fact that Mentor is Thanos' dad really doesn't help).
* ScaledUp: Was only able to turn into a dragon once but she made it count. As it turned out, this was because of an approaching case of DemonicPossession.
* StalkerWithATestTube: To ComicBook/Quasar. Her ComingOutStory revolved around her realizing that she had only ever used sex and romance as a means to an end, rather than an end in itself.
* TraumaCongaLine: The entire second half of the second volume, and ComicBook/TheThanosImperative are one for her.

Former high school bully of Peter Parker, later war hero. After losing his legs in Iraq, Flash Thompson would become a super soldier for the U.S. Government, using the Venom symbiote for covert operations. Eventually going rogue, Flash would join the Avengers, and would later be appointed Earth's representative on the Guardians of the Galaxy.

* FishOutOfWater: Flash was simply a member of the US Military who lost his legs trying his damnedest to save a superior officer, before jumping at the opportunity of being able to walk again thanks to the symbiote and volunteering to essentially become a government issue Spider-Man. And then was taken even further out of water by being appointed as the Avengers' liaison to the Guardians of the Galaxy.
