** In Bernadetta and [[spoiler:Jeritza's]] supports, they're sympathetic to the horrors the two have suffered at the hands of their abusive fathers, and regard said fathers as utterly despicable for what they've done. While Ingrid's father is not nearly as bad as Count Varley or [[spoiler:Baron Bartels]], both of Byleth's choices in response to him marrying her off disapprove of the idea.

** On the Crimson Flower route, it's Edelgard's ideals and ambitions for Fódlan's future that drive the plot, and Byleth mostly exists as an enforcer and MoralityChain. And incidentally, [[spoiler:this is the only route in which Byleth doesn't end the story in some position of leadership. * VengeanceFeelsEmpty: Subtly implied. [[spoiler:Byleth manages to confront Kronya, who killed Byleth's father Jeralt, but is drawn into a trap that forces Sothis to fuse with Byleth to save them]]. In the following chapter, the monastery BGM remains as the melancholy "Broken Routine," implying Byleth is unsatisfied with the outcome, and on the Blue Lions route, Dimitri will remark that he and the others "took little satisfaction" from getting revenge.

* TheAce: They were a mercenary before becoming a teacher at the Officers Academy, yet is skilled enough to teach the continent's most elite. After the timeskip, their allegiance alone decides the fate of the war. In their B-Support [[MasterSwordswoman Catherine]] even notes that someone with all their good qualities shouldn't logically exist, and yet here they are.

* ReiAyanamiExpy: Both versions of Byleth fall under most of the criteria of one. Byleth has pale skin, short dark teal/light green hair ([[spoiler:after merging with Sothis]]) and is implied to be in their early twenties. Byleth's [[DarkAndTroubledPast backstory is also rather tragic]] as their mother [[spoiler:died shortly after childbirth]] and they were raised by their father Jeralt to be [[ChildSoldiers a mercenary from an early age]]. Byleth is somewhat taciturn and is also noted to be very [[TheStoic stoic]] and emotionless by numerous characters but becomes [[NotSoStoic more emotional]] over the course of the story. Additionally, Byleth is revealed to be a Crest-bearer, possessing an incredibly rare Crest of Flames which allows them to [[spoiler:wield the Sword of the Creator]]. Furthermore, on every route Byleth ends up developing a strong connection with one of the lords (Claude, Dimitri, Edelgard) which can develop into a [[RelationshipUpgrade romantic relationship]].

GSS/GSI are not character, they are story tropes (per here)

* GameplayAndStoryIntegration:
** They grew up outside of the influence of the Church of Seiros, hence not having a particular affinity or weakness for faith at the beginning of the game, but become one of the Church's strongest knights, find out [[spoiler:that the goddess of Fódlan was implanted within them in their infancy]], and in one route [[spoiler:ends up as the new Archbishop after Rhea retires]], hence a budding talent in faith.
** Despite having the potential to be classed as a mage or MagicKnight, Byleth's Magic base stat and growth rate are barely above average. Byleth spent their life being raised by Jeralt as a ''mercenary''. Jeralt himself is a Paladin who does not use magic at all. So it makes sense that Byleth's own growth in magic is lacking compared to the students who were trained in it since a young age.
** On a similar token, while Byleth is nominally a JackOfAllTrades, being usable in potentially any class they classed in, the actual combat arts that Byleth is capable of learning favors them towards Sword- and Brawling-oriented classes. [[spoiler:It's another hint at Byleth's relation to Rhea.]]
* GameplayAndStorySegregation:
** Supports with other characters, such as Hannamen, Seteth and Felix, imply that Byleth is a seasoned warrior and MasterSwordsman, hinting that they started mercenary work at [[ChildSoldier ten at the very least]] and that they possessed renown matching their father's, with them being known and feared as "[[RedBaron The Ashen Demon]]" for their skill and emotionless visage in battle. Of course, being one of the first playable characters, Byleth starts with low stats compared to similarly renowned warriors such as Catherine, while most of their skills are at E, with their highest ones being swords at D+, brawling at E+, and Authority at D respectively.
** Divine Pulse in gameplay in ''Three Hopes'' allows Byleth to freeze time and attack enemies while the time is frozen, damage accumulating and then occuring as soon as time starts moving again. In actual cutscenes though Byleth/Sothis seems to have to make time start moving again before making contact with any attack, the time stop only being used to allow them to get close to an opponent without being noticed until the last moment.
