* AndIMustScream: Her imprisonment in an ice crystal, as a result of Warlic and Xan's duel, meant [[FateWorseThanDeath she was conscious the

entire time she was trapped in her prison]].
* AdultFear: She is imprisoned in a magical crystal which heals itself, and forced to endure centuries in living torment, always aware of what is going on around her. It's no wonder her sanity has slipped after being freed two centuries after her freezing.

* BrokenBird: Her time being trapped in the crystal changed her sweet personality, to one that is cold and relentless, as well as developing a deep hatred for magic.
* CostumePorn: Compare her incredibly detailed outfit to Alexander and Warlic's relatively simple robes.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Though she's not exactly a villain. Her accidental freezing (which was partly the fault of Warlic and Xan) was what led to her sanity slippage and her decision to start the Rose.

* FriendlyEnemy: After becoming [=ArchMagus=], Jaania is generally polite and even appears to respect her magic using enemies, seeing them more as misguided rather than evil. This even extends to the Hero, who she had mistook as Xan's apprentice in Book 2, but came to see as the hero s/he truly was.

* JerkassHasAPoint: [[spoiler: Magic really has created a lot of problems and even come close to destroying the world a number of times. Though getting rid of it entirely seems a pointless waste, since these problems are more due to the foolishness of its users than any inherent issues. And her organization's hunt against even (mostly) innocent magic users like The Hero makes her come across as a villain.]]

* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: In the Alexander saga she wears a pair of glasses, signalling her studious personality.

* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler: What she does in Book 3 is all for the fate of the world, after seeing the horrors that magic has done. As a result, she plans to destroy it and freezes The Hero, Warlic and Xan to eliminate the three major obstacles to her plan.]]

* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: [[spoiler: When finally freed, it becomes clear that her time imprisoned in ice has not been good for her sanity. At the end of Book 2, she traps Warlic, Xan, and the Hero in a prison of ice and [[TheMagicGoesAway she plans to bring about the end of magic]].]]

But when he came to be in charge, the local garrison became more tolerant. Even to the extent of allowing the Hero, who is typically the Rose's enemy, inside. He also calls one of the citizens speaking in the church out after he suggests they exile Thursday because she seems to attract the monster attacks.

* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Raven's parents were killed by a magic golem in the Doomwood soon after their arrival in Lore.

* BadassNormal: She takes out countless werewolves before the Hero has even caught up to her.
