** Musa: [[{{Meganekko}} myopic]], [[TheSouthpaw left-handed]], [[EgyptianMythology Kemetic]] [[BlackAndNerdy African-American nerd.]]
** Yanang: Hmong-American, atheist, butch, pansexual.
** Violet: white, Canadian, Jewish, left-handed, orphan, vegetarian moeblob.

!! Valerian Nightshade (Teuila)
The lead vocalist and primary lyricist. [[TallDarkAndBishoujo Tall, voluptuous, waist-length black hair]], golden-brown eyes, contralto singing voice, Samoan-American father, white South African mother (who actually had an Indian grandparent, but because that happened during TheApartheidEra the family preferred to keep quiet about it), born and spent her early childhood in Hawaii, played lacrosse in high school. She's also openly bisexual, a cat lover, and a (pretty slackass at times) liberal Christian.

* HotAmazon / BrawnHilda: she has elements of both. There are plenty of people in-universe who find her attractive, but she's also had her gender questioned more than [[{{Transsexual}} Lilja]] or [[{{Bifauxnen}} Yanang]] and attracts her share of jokes from the media based on her size and supposed butchness. Being an alto doesn't help.

* TallDarkAndBishoujo: she's 6'3", has waist-length black hair, and is certainly charismatic in her way, although more intimidating than glamorously aloof.

!! Lilja Lakebetonika
The lead guitarist, a Swedish guitar virtuoso about a year younger than Valerian. She's tall, blonde, [[{{Pettanko}} slender]], pretty in an "UmaThurman meets SquareEnix [[LongHairedPrettyBoy villain]]" sort of way, and rather insufferable at times, although she has her kind moments as well. Her childhood was, while not abusive, not a happy one, and she doesn't have much to do with her parents.

* AnythingThatMoves: her canonical sexual preference is "post-pubescent, decent personal hygiene, a pulse." She has an aesthetic preference for {{BBW}}s, and she has more female partners in general, but the latter could just be a side effect of living in a PinkBishoujoGhetto.

!! Musa Hawthorne
The drummer. Musa's African-American, and a few years older than Valerian and Lilja. She's been in a lot of bands, but before Maenad she was best known as the singer and guitarist for Laugh of the Medusa, a Seattle-based feminist alternative rock band active in the mid to late nineties.

!! Yanang Bai
The rhythm guitarist. She's a few years younger than Valerian and Lilja, was raised in Los Angeles, and her parents were Hmong immigrants from Laos. She got her start in local punk bands, discovered metal in her mid-teens, and joined Maenad shortly before she turned nineteen, when the original quartet decided they needed a second guitarist.

!! Violet Aciano
The current and best-known bassist, although not the first. Violet's a little less than a year younger than Yanang, and the band's token Jewish Canadian vegetarian moeblob.

* SweetHomeAlabama: she's ''very'' Southern in some ways (big on the hairspray and sweet tea), but open-minded enough to get along reasonably well with a multiethnic group of bisexual rock stars.

* NotGoodWithPeople: a mild Type One, although she isn't so much "shy" as "easily overstimulated," and large groups of people tend to be very demanding and noisy. She sometimes claims to be a Type Two because it's more metal. Violet was even ''less'' good with people during her childhood.

* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: in a way. Most of the time, the impact other people have on the band has a much greater role in what she thinks of them than their objective merits.

* InsistentTerminology: she does not have red eyes! (Well, they're maroon, technically.)

* {{Meganekko}}: although her personality is more in line with the StoicSpectacles stereotype, she does have a nerdy side as well, since she shows some familiarity with pre-fourth edition DungeonsAndDragons.

* SouthernBelle: you will pry her hairspray from her cold, dead hands.

* {{Dojikko}}: she's a GeniusDitz with poor motor skills (for which she has an actual medical justification) and an upbeat personality.

She ran away from home in her late teens due to her very conservative father's violent reaction when he discovered her {{transgender}}ed tendencies, and has traveled extensively, including a sojourn in Scandinavia acting in low-budget experimental films.

* CelebrityResemblance: in-universe, she looks more than a bit like Lilja Lakebetonika (perhaps not surprising, as they are both tall, skinny, fair-skinned, long-haired blonde transwomen of Scandinavian ancestry), and she wound up playing a character [[NoCelebritiesWereHarmed based on her]] in ''There Will Be Glitter.''

* CooldownHug: she winds up giving a lot of them, since if the person she's trying to calm down winds up violently freaking out on her there won't be any lasting damage.

* Chaotic Good (at her best) / ChaoticNeutral (the rest of the time)

* DaddysGirl: she was raised by her father, and they currently get along very well.

* CoolBigSis: she's a few years older than the other girls, has the most [[SexDrugsAndRockAndRoll worldly experience]], and winds up listening to a lot of their personal problems that they don't consider urgent enough to take to Artemisia. However, she resists being thought of as the TeamMom because she considers herself too irresponsible.
