* TheAloner: Outside the Challenge Room, he's usually alone fishing for hearts whenever the player comes across him, his only company being the tiny heart creatures surrounding the spring. That said, he doesn't mind the Lamb's company and welcomes them.
* BeatStillMyHeart: A victim. He's still alive despite his ribcage being torn wide open, and he knows his heart's still beating out there, wherever his old lover went.
** It seems he was correct, as his heart has since become (or always was) [[spoiler:Hathor, one of the demons the Lamb can summon for added buffs during the dungeon runs. If the Lamb encounters Ratoo while accompanied by Hathor, he will request the Lamb to hand the heart-demon over.]] The Lamb can, of course, [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential decline]].

* HealingSpring: His area acts as one. By interacting with the pond he's fishing in, the Lamb can restore all of their health at once.
* HeartSymbol: Has a heart on his hat, another wedged into the top of his wooden staff, and carries another in a birdcage, along with all the ones he's caught over the years.
* TheLostLenore: His old lover who has both literally and metaphorically stolen his heart. He's fishing for hearts in the hopes he might see her again. [[spoiler:As it turns out, his heart is the demon Hathor that the Lamb can summon. If the player comes across him in the dungeons whilst having the demon accompanying him, he will ask for it back in exchange for a permanent half-heart.]]

Him asking for a prize in exchange for something is treated not unlike a DealWithTheDevil (see below). This all points to him being a supernatural being, rather than a regular merchant.

* EvenEvilHasStandards: He has a clear contempt for The One Who Waits, saying that at least he, the Fox, wouldn't resurrect someone just to force them into eternal servitude.
* EvilLaugh: Gives a long, deep, echoing laugh if the Lamb [[spoiler:gives Ratau to him]], apparently genuinely both amused and impressed at their ruthlessness.
* ForTheEvulz: He gives no reason for wanting [[spoiler:Ratau]] dead, seemingly only doing it out of sadism.
* GoryDiscretionShot: Whatever he does to the Followers you sacrifice to him, it's so horrible it happens offscreen.

* NiceGuy: They're nicer than Ratau's other friends, and tell the Lamb not to feel bad for losing to them because they gave it their best shot.

A new scene in the Relics of the Old Faith update also has the Lighthouse Keeper see them and immediately call them hideous, to which they take offense.
* MushroomMan: They are this.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: They have bright red eyes similar to dissenting Followers or their leader Sozo when he eats a Menticide Mushroom. Subverted as they're completely harmless and seem to recognize how Sozo's abuse of the mushrooms is making him become increasingly unstable.
* UncertainDoom: It's unknown what happens to them after Sozo dies but given the dangerous creatures and cultists lurking in Anura, it's likely that they were killed or sacrificed.
** Subverted as of the "Relics of the Old Faith" update. They'll now pop up in a random room in Anura and comment on Sozo's demise and how it's the reason they've left him.
