Gaius is the ruler of Alera, the most powerful Crafter alive, and essentially [[TheDumbledore Albus Dumbledore]] without the [[ObfuscatingStupidity facade of eccentric senility]]. While often [[MagnificentBastard ruthless]], he is both intelligent and wise and everything he does is for the greater good of Alera. All respect Gaius's abilities, but some (like Isana) think he's lost touch with the common people and is therefore dangerous. Others (like Aquitaine or Kalarus) want to take his throne themselves.

Illegitimate son of one of the most powerful High Lords, Max is Tavi's roommate at the Academy and a close personal friend. Lives life for the moment, [[spoiler: as he doesn't expect to outlive his father.]] Powerful in Earthcrafting (especially the ability to induce lust), with a respectable skill in watercrafting as well. As one of the nobility, is also capable in all six elements. Seems to have fallen into the role of Tavi's primary sidekick.
