!! Lyell Bone
Charlie's father, and Amy's husband. He is an organist who disappeared in 1994 while trying to stop the abduction of Emma Tolly. [[spoiler: He is hypnotized by Manfred Bloor into forgetting who he is and spends the next ten years disguised as a teacher at Bloor's Academy. He is eventually woken up and is reunited with his wife and son. During the last three books, he and Amy pretend to go on a second honeymoon while Lyell roams the city as the Red Knight]].
* ActionDad: [[spoiler: Rides around the Red King's city disguised as the Red Knight, protecting the Red King's children, including his own son. At the very end he battles Count Harken in a duel during the final battle and is able to hold his own very well against him.]]
* {{Brainwashed}}: By Manfred Bloor, eight years before the beginning of the series, for trying to prevent the abduction of Emma Tolly (and also because he knocked Ezekiel Bloor to the ground, crippling him permanently).

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Not including his probably troubled childhood (and with a mother like Grizelda Bone, one can't expect his childhood to be a completely happy one) he's hypnotized in 1994 and spends ten years in a state of dazed forgetfulness, lost to his wife and child.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler: Lyell defeats and kills Count Harken, a powerful enchanter, in the final book, being only armed with armour, an enchanted sword and the mare that is Queen Berenice. He isn't even endowed]].

* {{Elopement}}: Lyell eloped to Mexico with Amy Jones and married her there.

* NeverFoundTheBody: Even though his car crashed into a quarry, his body was never found. [[spoiler: This is because the Bloors and Yewbeams dragged him out of the car just before it went over the edge of the quarry]].
* NiceGuy: He's certainly nicer than the rest of the Yewbeams, excluding Paton.
* NotHimself: When he came back from the cathedral after being hypnotized. Amy tells Charlie in the first book that it was as if he were under a spell.
* OnlyFriend: Lyell was most likely Paton's only friend before his disappearance.
* ScrewtheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: This seems to be his attitude for most of the series.
* SecretKeeper: He's the keeper of the box containing Maybelle's will.

* ThePianoPlayer: Lyell is a gifted pianist and organist. According to Gabriel, he is absolutely brilliant.

Though he is still recovering from his ten-year-long trance, Lyell chooses to roam around the city as the Red Knight, protecting the endowed children, including his own son. He even kills ''Count Harken Badlock'', a powerful enchanter and the BigBad of the series]].
* WistfulAmnesia: During his spellbound years, Lyell has no memories of his past life but senses that something is wrong with him. At midnight and midday, when the cathedral clock chimes, the hypnotism weakens briefly and he can sense hidden memories. When Amy and Charlie meet him in the Academy chapel, he doesn't recognize them but realizes that he should.

!! Mostyn Tolly
Emma Tolly's father and Nancy Tolly's husband. He was a brilliant but lazy inventor who chose to give away his only daughter to the Bloors in exchange for an exciting challenge. He eventually regrets this and tries to put it right, but is murdered before he can.
* BrilliantButLazy: Miss Ingledew describes him as having had a brilliant mind for inventions, but too lazy to make most of his ideas into a reality.
* PosthumousCharacter: He died just a week before the beginning of the first book.

!! Nancy Tolly
Emma Tolly's mother. She died of illness just days before Emma's second birthday.
* PosthumousCharacter: She is deceased before the beginning of the series.

!! Rufus Raven
Billy Raven's father and Lyell Bone's close friend. He was killed in a traffic accident when Billy was a baby.

Rufus' wife. She was killed along with her husband in a traffic accident.

Lyell Bone's father and Grizelda's husband. He was a pilot who was killed when his plane crashed into a desert in 1963.
* HiddenDepths: When he is first mentioned, he's dismissed as not very important because of his non-endowed status and mysterious origins. Fast-forward to the eighth book, and it turns out that he was descended from Maybelle Raven, and a part of the line who was meant to inherit the Bloor fortune and estate.
* NiceGuy: He was a generally nice guy.
* SecretLegacy: He was the true heir to Maybelle's will, before his death. After his death his son Lyell was meant to inherit everything Monty owned.

!! Mary Chance
Bartholomew Bloor's first wife. She killed herself when she believed him to be dead in an avalanche.
* DeathByDespair: She danced herself to death after hearing that Bartholomew had died in an avalanche during his trip to the Himalayas.
* FirstLove: Is this for Bartholomew.
* TheLostLenore: Is this for Bartholomew.

!! Roland Yewbeam
Otus and Amoret's son. He is the direct ancestor of the Yewbeams.

Amadis' youngest son and only survivor of the fire in the Castle of Mirrors. He could talk to animals. He is the ancestor of the Ravens and Crowquills.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His entire family was killed when Borlath set fire to the castle on the Island of a Thousand Blues.

* SoleSurvivor: He was the only survivor of the fire that consumed the castle on the Island of a Thousand Blues. This is because he hid in a well deep enough to keep him safe from the flames and the smoke.
* TalkingToAnimals: He had the ability to talk to animals.
* WalkingTheEarth: After fleeing the Castle of Mirrors, he travelled around England with his uncle Tolomeo, searching for Otus and Roland Yewbeam. Much later, he travelled across Europe and settled in the Holy Roman Empire, where he started a family.

!! Grizelda Bone
The mother of Lyell Bone and grandmother of Charlie Bone. Also known as Grandma Bone. She lives in Filbert Street with Charlie and his family until ''Wildnerness Wolf'', then at the end of ''Red Knight'' leaves and is never seen again.
* AntagonisticOffspring: Her son Lyell refused to side with the Bloors and Yewbeams, which caused Grizelda to turn against him.
* EvilMatriarch: Not ''quite'' evil, and at one point it’s implied that she simply thinks it’s stupid to go against the will of whoever holds the power. She’s certainly nasty enough, though.
* GrumpyBear: She's always grumpy about something, and never smiles. The atmosphere in the house is considerably better when she is not there.
* IHaveNoSon: Grizelda's general feelings towards Lyell after he 'breaks the rules'. She turns her back to him and allows him to be hypnotized and lost, and later only thinks of his as an unfortunate episode that has passed.
* {{Jerkass}}: She calls Charlie's friends mean names, calls Charlie stupid and foolish, and speaks poorly of her own son at times after his disappearance.

Paton is Charlie's great-uncle and Grandma Bone’s much younger brother. He is a power-booster and as such does not go out much during the day. He is in love with and eventually marries Julia Ingledew, Emma Tolly's aunt.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Paton's mother was murdered when he was seven years old, his sisters turned against him and his father, and his gift caused him to be a pariah within the community and his own family as he couldn't go out in daylight. There's also his guilt at not helping Lyell at the cathedral on the day he disappeared.
* DeadpanSnarker: Is a prime example of this.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Paton, like Venetia and Lyell, has surprisingly pale skin and dark hair.
* HappilyMarried: To Julia Ingledew at the end of the final book.
* HeroicNeutral: This is Paton's stance until the end of the first book.
* ItsAllMyFault: Paton never forgives himself for not meeting Lyell at the cathedral on the day Lyell disappeared, and blames himself for what happened.
* MagicEnhancement: Is a "power booster", though this mainly extends just to electronics, lightbulbs in particular. He also knows how to utilize this power effectively, and even manages to fatally electrocute Yolanda with it.
* TheMentor: To Charlie and many of the other endowed children. Olivia is specifically stated to look up to him, and he is one of the few people who can successfully chastise her.
* MissingMom: Paton's mother died when he was seven, after being pushed down a staircase by Yolanda Yewbeam in Yewbeam Castle.
* OnlyFriend: Lyell was most likely Paton's only friend before his disappearance.
* ParentalSubstitute: Paton seems to get into this role as the series goes along. At first he is aloof and a loner, but after he puts his head up he begins to be more of an influence in Charlie's life, and helps Charlie undo whatever evil the Bloors have done and get him out of any trouble he has with Grandma Bone. It's justified, since with Charlie's father out of the picture for ten years, and Paton being the only reliable adult male in 9 Filbert Street, then of course Charlie would turn to him for the sort of fatherly or familial support he needs. By the end of the series, it's clear that they have grown really close and that Charlie looks up to Paton a lot and is terribly upset when he [[spoiler: believes Paton has died during the final battle on the heath]].
* SwordCane: Paton has one in his walking stick, used in the final battle. And it's electrified.
* TheConfidant: Seems to have been this for Lyell, and eventually becomes this for Charlie.
* TheReliableOne: Charlie always turns to Paton when he needs help with something, and he's usually willing to help in any way he can, unless he's on a road trip, been run over by a car or bewitched by Yorath.
* TheStoic: Paton is usually a tower of strength, and never lets onto his more deeper, personal feelings often.
** NotSoStoic: When Julia Ingledew is thought to be dying from putting on an enchanted belt.
* ThisMeansWar: When Paton goes to help Benjamin and Runner Bean (who's been attacked by a beast), and sees his sister Eustacia acting as Benjamin's sitter so that the Bloors can steal Dr Tolly's case, he effectively declares war on his sisters, realizing that it’s time to put his head up at last.

!! Orvil Onimous
A small man who has a way with animals, Mr. Onimous is a friend to the good endowed and aids them repeatedly in their fight against the Bloors. He looks after the three Flame cats, Leo, Sagittarius, and Aries. His wife runs the Pets' Cafe, where he can be found helping out. He is apparently endowed, but his endowment is never quite stated or shown.
* TinyGuyHugeGirl: He himself is tiny, but he is married to an incredibly tall woman.
* TheReliableOne: He can always be counted on to help the endowed children, and allows them to meet at the Pets' Cafe and plan.

!! Onoria Onimous
The owner of the Pets' Cafe. She is a kind, very tall woman who loves all animals and children. She is married to Orvil Onimous.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Like her husband, she adores animals, and even adopts Rembrandt the rat and Solomon the blue boa when they have nowhere else to go.
* TinyGuyHugeGirl: She is very tall, but is married to a very short man.

!! Norton Cross
* FaceHeelTurn: Starts out as Orvil and Onoria’s goodhearted bouncer, but winds up helping the Bloors out. May or may not have been the result of brainwashing.

The rightful guardian of Billy Raven. He was sent to prison for eight years for supposedly robbing a bank. He concerns himself with the safety of Billy, but ultimately [[spoiler: he sacrifices his life to save Paton Yewbeam's]].
* FrameUp: He was framed as a bank robber and sent to prison for seven years.
* HeroicSacrifice: He throws himself and [[spoiler: Yorath Yewbeam]] from a cliff to save the life of Paton Yewbeam.

!! Julia Ingledew
A bookshop owner and Emma Tolly's aunt. Paton Yewbeam is in a relationship with her.
* BrainyBrunette: Is quite intelligent, and has long chestnut-colored hair.
* CuteBookworm: She's described to be very attractive and interested in books and history. Paton is instantly smitten with her.
* EncyclopaedicKnowledge: She’s read most of the rare and old books in her shop, and is stated by Paton to be an absolute treasure for his pursuit of history.
* TheReliableOne: She can always be relied on to help the children of the Red King.
* WhenSheSmiles: Miss Ingledew is said to have a dazzling smile.
* NiceGirl: She is one of the kindest characters in the series.
* HappilyMarried: To Paton Yewbeam at the end of the eighth book.
