* CampStraight: Definitely camp (especially in the anime) and most likely straight as he's commented in the manga that he shares Rin's preference for women of the "devilish" type. He also has some ShipTease with Shura in the manga.

* DemonLordsAndArchdevils: As it turned out he's Samael the [[TimeMaster King of Time]] and [[SpaceMaster Space]], third most powerful among the demons in hell.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Despite Yukio making a show of being a polite, mature, and considerate NiceGuy, his real personality is more that of a {{Jerkass}}, which is seen in his condescending attitude towards Rin. [[spoiler: As of his defection, the sheep's clothing is off and he's a full on {{Jerkass}}.]]

* TheFarmerAndTheViper: [[spoiler:Yukio turns on Lucifer after Lucifer gives him weapons and knowledge.]]

* HumanDemonHybrid: Like his twin Rin, Yukio is the son of Satan and a human woman. However, he was too sickly to receive any demonic power.
* ICannotSelfTerminate: [[spoiler:Because of Satan infesting his left eye, Yukio can't die no matter how much he wants to kill himself. Since he sees no other way to escape Satan's possession, Yukio wants to force Rin to kill him.]]

* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: As the manga progresses, Yukio's actions and methods become more and more extreme and highly questionable. This comes to a head when he ''points a gun at Suguro's head'' after overhearing he and Lightning were involved in the death of one of the monks that worked for Fujimoto. Not long after that, [[spoiler:Yukio makes a full-on FaceHeelTurn by defecting from the Order.]]
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: He knows it, and it doesn't end well. He becomes increasingly desperate for information about his and Rin's origins, [[spoiler:to the point of threatening Ryuji for it]]. Ironically, finally gaining access to some new information like he's wanted for so long sent him into a downward spiral to his DespairEventHorizon.
** [[spoiler:It turns out Mephisto deliberately kept him in the dark for reasons only known to him. When Mephisto sends Rin to the past to learn about their origin, Rin asks why he didn't send Yukio instead since Yukio was the one who was obsessed about learning the truth, and Mephisto implies that he tried sending Yukio back in another timeline, but it only made things worse.]]
** Hypocriticaly, he locked Rin out of the loop years before the series began as he never told Rin that he was training to be an exorcist. Admittedly this was originally probably because Shiro told Yukio not to tell Rin anything, but he's continued to some degree even after it ceased to be an issue. For example he never informed Rin that Mephisto is a demon despite it being common knowledge among exorcists.

* MuggleBornOfMages: Yukio is also a HumanDemonHybrid son of Satan, but he never showed any demonic powers while growing up.
* MutualEnvy: Rin envies Yukio because he's smarter and more experienced than him and Yukio got to be personally trained by their father while Rin was kept in the dark. Unknowingly to Rin, Yukio is way more jealous of him. Yukio had to go through arduous exorcist training from a very young age while Rin was allowed to have a relatively normal life until their father died. He also envies his brother's more brave and confident personality that somehow always makes things go his way. Yukio also envies Rin's raw power and healing.

* SanitySlippage: Yukio acts increasingly erratic as the series progresses, doing things like walking off a building to intentionally invoke DieOrFly, pointing a gun to his own head for the same reason, and covertly attempting to take Hachiro's power. [[spoiler:Things come to a head in a series of chapters where, in an attempt to learn more about where he and Rin came from, he points a gun at Bon, actually gets results from Lightning but falls into despair from what he finds, blows up at Shiemi, attempts to kill himself (and fails due to Satan), demands answers from Mephisto (who refuses to tell him anything), and points a gun at Mephisto from backstage during a televised press conference. Culminates with Yukio defecting to the Illuminati after shooting Rin repeatedly.]]

* ShipTease: With Shiemi to begin with. Increasingly gets teased with [[MayDecemberRomance SHURA]] in later chapters.

* SiblingTriangle: With his brother Rin towards Shiemi.

** [[spoiler:In universe she's experiencing this after one of her missions is recorded and makes her internet famous.]]

* MandatoryMotherhood: Shura's ancestor Tatsuko made a pact with the demon Hachiro to give Tatsuko and her decendants power in exchange for dying when they turn 30. The pact also requires that Tatsuko's decendants give birth to a child before they die so that the pact will continue. Shura refused to have a child, but Hachiro tried to force the issue by taking advantage of ''Yukio's'' presence.

* MundaneUtility: In the OVA she uses her {{Hammerspace}} tattoo to get a beer.

* ReallyGetsAround: Implied to be this way when she was in her teens/early 20s. During a flashback in chapter 78, Shiro says he heard that she's been throwing herself at a lot of men and that she needs to respect herself more. Her response is to take her top off and [[MarshmallowHell shove her bare breasts in his face]]. The reason for this is because Hachiro has taught her that her role, like all those in her bloodline, is to grow into a woman who looks just like Tatsuko, conceive a child who will perform the same role, and die at the age of 30. It's no wonder she doesn't have any modesty, under those conditions.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: They're matched with a violent streak.

* ToplessnessFromTheBack: [[{{Fanservice}} Along with Yukio]].[[note]]Rin's trying to practice controlling his blue demon flames here[[/note]].

* AntiAntiChrist: He's a demon and one of Satan's kin, who's convinced that "peace is the disorder in which people can coexist", loves the human world, and only wants to protect it in a way any sane human can consider reasonable.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: He's 3rd highest ranking of ''all'' demon in terms of strength and one of the Eight Demon Kings. He's right below Lucifer in terms of strength in the Gehenna Hierarchy. He is also an Honorary Knight which, in exorcist rankings, is two ranks below Paladin, and, in fact, holds greater authority than them. It's possible he'd be higher too, were it not for his heritage.

* EccentricMentor: If Mephisto really ''is'' on the side of the Exorcists, then he is this. Older than most of the other characters? Check. Knows more than he lets on most of the time? Check. Usually acts like comic relief? Check. Eccentric? Double check. Cares not for what others may think? Considering [[VillainousFashionSense his fashion sense]], check. Acts like a mentor/protector/guide? Check, to his students and school. More powerful than he shows? Considering he was able to drag a [[BerserkMode berserker]] Rin around [[ExcuseMeWhileIMultitask while calmly sheathing his sword and pleasantly talking to someone]], that would be a ''check''[[note]]He hasn't been in a legitimate fight yet, though, so it's yet to be confirmed[[/note]]. Seems to prefer letting his students solve problems by themselves? Mostly check, with him [[GuileHero making a few nudges here and there]]. He seems to fit this trope very well but then, if he's not on the side he claims to be on, he may be a [[SubvertedTrope subversion]].
* {{Expy}}: He's essentially a good counterpart of the Millennium Earl from ''Manga/DGrayMan'', another dark shonen about exorcists. Much like him, Pheles dresses in a gentleman/buffoon fashion complete with top hat and ornated umbrella, behaves goofily, looks vaguely like the Earl's human form, has the DealWithTheDevil as a character theme, and is secretly associated with demons and a supernatural being himself.

* IntriguedByHumanity: Specifically the Japanese. He's a bonafide {{otaku}}.

* SlasherSmile: has this expression on a Jump SQ cover.

* SexyMentor: To Rin, lectures on controlling his flames while not wearing a top. [[IgnoreTheFanservice Not that he notices.]]

* MsFanservice: The most obvious case of fanservice in this show.

* PrecociousCrush: Towards Shiro when she was a child. There are hints she still held something of a crush on him even into the present.

* ShamelessFanServiceGirl: She doesn't mind showing her body to everyone included her student.

* WalkingSwimsuitScene: Her standard outfit almost resembles this at times, with the very small "bra" she has on top. Not much difference from the top from the actual bikini she wears once.

* BoobsOfSteel: In addition to being an effective fighter she also has the largest chest of the female cast.

* ChristmasCake: She introduces herself to her class as eighteen and constantly interrupts Yukio whenever he tries to tell everyone that she's really twenty-seven years old. Takes a dark turn when it turns out she's bound to die at thirty years due to a demonic pact her ancestress made with a powerful immortal demon.

* HalfHumanHybrid: Subverted, in that he was too sickly to receive any demonic power despite being Rin's twin. He's regularly tested and no one can find anything. [[spoiler: The Illuminati confirms these findings and also say that he is also unsuitable for possession. He doesn't take the news well.]]

* MuggleBornOfMages: Yukio is also a HalfHumanHybrid son of Satan, but he never showed any demonic powers while growing up.

* {{Gainaxing}}: To show off her chest. That bra is small.

* BerserkButton: Many. Some are played for comedy, like his reactions to Rin acting childish or Shura's teasing. Others are more serious, like being called a demon or weak.

* PowerTattoo: She keeps her sword in a magical tattoo located just above her bosom that functions as a {{Hammerspace}}. She can do the same thing with the one on her stomach.

* MeaningfulName: Yuki or "Snow". Shows his [[TheStoic more cool-headed]] and [[TheSmartGuy smart]] approach to things, as well as his [[TheCorruptible fragile]] mental state.
