* BlueMeansSmartOne: His visible eye is blue, hois hair is grey-tinged blue and he often wears blue clothing. He's also one of the smartest characters, usually playing TheChessmaster.

* DelicateAndSickly: He has asthma like his mother did. When he was little, he frequently got sick and go outside much.

* NonActionGuy: A rare inversion, as he's the main character and he's far from being a ButtMonkey; he's simply physically weak. Ciel generally sits in the sidelines and watches as Sebastian does the fighting.

* AdaptationalJerkass:
** In the manga, Ciel is still not exactly a good person, but under normal circumstances, he's aloof and dismissive at worst. In the first anime, Ciel is more overtly demeaning of others and a bit abusive.
** In the first episode of the first season, Ciel arrogantly claims he doesn't have to explain his actions when he throws a dart and injures Finny. He threw a dart at Sebastian too, but his butler seems like ''he's used to it.'' In contrast, the manga makes clear Ciel is strict, but wouldn't abuse his servants for amusement, nor would manga Sebastian allow it, as it would be behavior not fitting the aesthetic of an earl.

* AdorablyPrecociousChild: Usually very solemn and composed, he is very committed to his jobs (running the Phantomhive family business, and fighting supernatural evil). Slightly different from the norm in that most people take him quite seriously, at least the ones who know him well.

* ArrangedMarriage: With his [[KissingCousins cousin Elizabeth]]. Early on, he makes it clear it is a forced arrangment and he does not want to. However, he does openly care about her and she for him.

* BadassAdorable: If you can look past his obnoxiousness.
* BadassAndChildDuo: He's a [[NonActionGuy non-combatant child]] who mostly relies on Sebastian (and, less frequently, his other servants) to battle the enemies for him.

* ButtMonkey: He has his moments, especially in the first few episodes of the Noah's Arc Circus season. There's also the ''Ciel In Wonderland'' OVA....

* ColdBloodedTorture: Performed on him by the cultists seen in his [[DarkAndTroubledPast backstory]].

* CreepyChild: He's a cynical, jaded, and very driven 13-year-old who is a ChessMaster. He has no qualms about getting involved in dangerous missions and will command his badass demon butler Sebastian to kill someone without a second thought. Then again, he's this way as a result of losing his family and being put through a living hell.

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Averted, as although he holds the highest rank in the Phantomhive Household (not to mention the fact that he works as the Queen's freaking watchdog), he's also a bit of a pansy, and likely the most physically incapable in the [[WorldOfBadass entire series]].
** Sebastian once stated that he doubts Ciel has the finger dexterity to button his own shirts.
** In an early arc, Sebastian was proven right- it took him way too long to get dressed on his own. Though at least [[DamnedByFaintPraise he's learned how to do his own buttons]] by the time the school arc comes around.

* PayEvilUntoEvil: His job as the Queen's Watchdog is eliminating any criminals that disturb the order in London. This involves him having to KickTheSonOfABitch a lot.

* VillainProtagonist: Ceil is cold, ruthless, bitter, and out for revenge. He treats all the people around him as pawns in his never-ending chess game. Usually his enemies are even worse, though [[spoiler: his treatment of the members of the Noah's Ark Circus is particularly cruel]].

** Later he does the same thing to Sieglinde Sullivan, although instead of making another servant, he's created a potential new weapon for Queen Victoria. However, not wanting Sieglinde's ultimate secret weapon of devastating power to fall into the Queen's hands, he has Sieglinds give her some valuable information, but makes her promise to keep her ultimate weapon secret to the grave. This is the first time that Ciel withholds valuable information from Queen Victoria.
