----

* AloofLeaderAffableSubordinate: While she'll be the first one to tell you Makoto isn't her subordinate, her work dynamic with Makoto comes off as this.
* AwfulTruth: [[spoiler:Kyoko is beholdened to the Deep Ones.]]

* CowboyCop: Kyoko has definetely ignored protocol and possibly broken a few laws of her own in past investigations.
* DespairEventHorizon: Kyoko ''finally'' breaks after [[spoiler:realizing she was manipulated into pursuing a relationship with Makoto and her feelings for him might not be real.]]

* [[spoiler:DiedInYourArmsTonight: With Makoto.]]
* EveryScarHasAStory: The burns on her hands. Kyoko believes she got them during a case and sees them as a symbol of the sacrifices Kirigiris must make. [[spoiler:It's actually proof of Eldritch meddling in her childhood.]]
* FamilyBusiness: Detective work runs in the Kirigiri family.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Several characters talk about how Kyoko is overprotective and very aggressive when it comes to defending Makoto. [[spoiler:She was tasked by the Deep Ones to be his protector.]]
** [[spoiler:“I can’t quite explain why, but I’ve had a compulsion to protect him [Makoto] ever since I met him.” Kyoko to Sayaka.]]
* [[spoiler:HappinessInSlavery: Implied to be her fate.]] Though she isn't so much happy as much as she is insane.]]
* GreenEyedMonster: Kyoko is very territorial over Makoto and does not like anyone intruding.
* GreatDetective: She and her grandfather are considered the last of their kind.
* GutFeeling: The Kirigiri line is known for their great investigative instincts allowing them to solve very difficult cases. [[spoiler:[[DealWithTheDevil One of the benefits of having a contract with an Elder God.]]]]
* [[spoiler:TheHeroDies]]
* [[spoiler: MoreThanMindControl: How much of her protectiveness toward Makoto is real, and how much of it is due to implanted impulses?]]
* MinoredInAssKicking: Kyoko mentions she is trained to fight, but because of injuries and the otherwordly nature of her enemies, she doesn't get to show it.
* NotSoStoic: As the story is from her perspective, it's clear Kyoko isn't the EmotionlessGirl other characters see her as.
* TheParanoiac: Kyoko becomes more and more paraniod as the story progresses. Eventually, she even loses trust in Makoto.
* ParentalAbandonment: Her father walked out when she was five after her mother died.
* PetTheDog: A good way to judge her sanity level is to check the strength of her relationship with Makoto.
* SanitySlippage: Paranoia and the incomprehensible nature of the Hope's Peak case drives Kyoko down this path.
* StoicWoobie: Kyoko goes through ''hell'' but for the most part, keeps it bottled up both because of her stoic nature and because she doesn't feel she can trust anyone.
* SociallyAwkwardHero: Being with Makoto has made her better than she was, but she still shows signs of being socially stunted like not understanding why everyone is so upset when the police dog dies.
* [[spoiler:TargetedToHurtTheHero: Nagito pretends Kyoko is his target to trigger Makoto's protective instincts and keep him around. In reality, he's after Makoto.]]
* UnwittingPawn: Kyoko's obsession with Hope's Peak [[spoiler:meant her boyfriend, the church's target, stayed nearby and within their reach.]]
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Kyoko is extremely protective toward Makoto.
* WasItAllALie: [[spoiler:Kyoko asks this about her and Makoto's relationship. She's told Makoto's feelings for her are real, but is never told whether her feelings for Makoto are.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: Kyoko gets several of these over the story, especially as her sanity wanes.
** Makoto calls her out on exploring a CreepyCave alone without letting anyone know she was there.
** He calls her out again later when her recklessness and obsession get them trapped at Hope's Peak during a violent rainstorm while again, no one knows they're there.
** Byakuya calls Kyoko out on her more-than-usual reckless and aggressive behaviour toward the case. At one point, he accuses her of [[RightForTheWrongReasons secretly being an accomplice to Hope's Peak.]]

!! Makoto Naegi

Kyoko's detective partner. They have been in a relationship for several years when the story starts.

----

* AloofLeaderAffableSubordinate: Makoto sees his work relationship with Kyoko as this, much to her dismay.
*[[spoiler:AndThenJohnWasAZombie: Makoto morphs into a Deep One.]]
* AnimalsHateHim: Averted then played straight. In the early chapters, the precinct's police dog adores Makoto and ignores Kyoko in favour of him. The replacement puppy brought in near the end after their entanglement with Hope's Peak is terrified of him.
* BornUnlucky: Makoto is renowned for his constant bad luck.
* ChickMagnet: Kyoko and Mukuro are instantly attracted to him and Kyoko implies he has a lot of other admirers.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Makoto is very active and goes behind Kyoko's back several times to forge alliances and make deals. He also goes through his own share of Eldritch events, but doesn't share details.
* OnlySaneMan: To Kyoko as her sanity wanes.
* ParentalAbandonment: Makoto's father disappeared when he was young.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Makoto keeps some big secrets from Kyoko which blow up in his face. Justified as Makoto was aware of her SanitySlippage and didn't know if he could trust her.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: [[spoiler:Nagito intends to use Makoto's despair as motivation/bait for [[EldritchAbomination his father]] to break down the [[SealedEvilInACan Gate.]]]]

* JerkassHasAPoint: Byakuya comes to suspect Kyoko is secretly working for Hope's Peak. [[spoiler: [[MindControl In a way, he's right.]]]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Byakuya is prickly at best, but he is seen waiting in the hosipital for news after his officers are injured.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Byakuya is never informed about the true nature of Hope's Peak not just because it's a CassandraTruth, but Kyoko doesn't want to encourage him to look further into it.
* SkewedPriorities: Byakuya's ultimate goal is make sure his precinct has the highest funding in the country.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hope's Peak]]

!! Nagito Komaeda

The pastor of Hope's Peak. He is the one who reported the body, kick-starting the story.

* [[spoiler:EldritchAbomination: All we know about Nagito's true form is that its winged, has claws, and is ''very'' big.]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: In his introduction, Nagito waxes on how some people are naturally superior to others and makes fun of Makoto for being an assistant to the superior Kyoko.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Nagito geuinely cares about his family. [[spoiler:It's his motive for opening the Gate.]]
* HeroOfAnotherStory: [[spoiler:For the ''Elders Ones.'' Nagito has been working for a very, very long time to free his family.]]
* ObviouslyEvil: Nagito is smug and abrasive with a tendency to show up at scary or awkward moments.
* PapaWolf: [[spoiler:Uncle actually, but Nagito killed Ohori Naegi when he attempted to kill Makoto.]]
* [[spoiler:TheBadGuyWins: The story ends just as Nagito completes his plan to open the Gate.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: Nagito is responsible for [[spoiler:burning a young Kyoko's hands.]]

!! Angie Yonaga

A wandering priestess who is visiting Hope's Peak. She worships a being called Atua, who seems to be part of the Hope's Peak pantheon.

She has been traveling with Korekiyo.

----

* AngstWhatAngst: Angie shows no grief over the destruction of her tribe.
* AntiVillain: Angie's thoughts on Hope's Peak's plans are unknown, although she clearly isn't trying to stop them. However, as the priestess of Atua, she wants to convert people to following a god who will spare them from TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt.
* BackFromTheDead: Angie claims to have been revived by Atua.
* BirdsOfAFeather: Despite their wildly different personalities, Angie sees Mukuro this way due to their similiar position at Hope's Peak. Later, she wants to extends this to Kyoko.
* FirstNameBasis: Angie introduces herself as such and refers to Kyoko and Makoto by their first names.
* TheFundamentalist: Angie is ''constantly'' raining praise upon Atua.
* GenkiGirl: Angie is always in a cheerful mood and doesn't let things like Kyoko's unfriendliness dissaude her.
* HappinessInSlavery: Angie is technically a slave of Atua and the Elders, but she has no problem with it.

!! Izuru Kamukura

A resident of Hope's Peak.

[[spoiler:He previously went by the name Hajime Hinata.]]

----

* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: [[spoiler:As Hajime, he was a cop and disappeared after checking out a place called Hope's Peak, a situation similar to Makoto and Kyoko's.]]
* [[spoiler:EldritchAbomination: It seems to be much less otherwordly than Nagito's form, though in Eldritch years he is little more than a newborn.]]
* [[spoiler: ForgottenFallenFriend: People at Hajime's old precinct need prompting to remember him. Chiaki is the only exception to this.]]
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: [[spoiler:How Hope's Peak lured him in.]]
* OnlySaneMan: Izuru is the only person at Hope's Peak who has a normal reaction to a body in the backyard.
* PhotoIdentificationDenial: Izuru denies knowing Chiaki after being shown a picture of her and after being shown a picture of them ''together.'' [[spoiler:He's not lying. He geuinely doesn't remember her.]]

!! Korekiyo Shinguji/[[spoiler:Atua]]

A wanderer accompanying Angie Yonaga who is fascinated with humanity.

[[spoiler:He is the human guise of Atua.]]

----

* AffablyEvil: Korekiyo is ''off'', but he's polite and doesn't attempt to toy with Kyoko and Makoto the way Nagito and Junko do. [[RewatchBonus He even tries to comfort Makoto in his weird, cryptic way.]]
* [[spoiler:BenevolentAbdomiation: Korekiyo is a fan of humanity and is the only reason [[EndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt any remnant of it remains.]]]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Korekiyo likes people and typically stays out of the conflict between Kyoko/Makoto and Hope's Peak. [[spoiler:He still slaughtered Angie's tribe when they killed her.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}: [[spoiler:Korekiyo is a fan of humanity just like Atua. On a couple of occasions, Angie makes a comment about Atua while in his presence and he responds to it immediately afterwards.]]
* HumansAreInteresting: Much like canon, Korekiyo enjoys studying humanity.
* MysteriousPast: Byakuya's background check turns up nothing on him.
* NightmareFetishist: Korekiyo isn't bothered by the murder in his favourite garden and is far more interested in what Kyoko and Makoto would do to solve it. He also claims humanity in general is fascinated by death, and Kyoko and Makoto especially so as detectives.
* PapaWolf: For Angie.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's hard to talk about him without mentioning [[spoiler:he's Atua.]]

!! Mukuro Ikusaba

A resident of Hope's Peak.

----

* IJustWantToBeSpecial: A conversation with Makoto shows Mukuro desperately wants to be like her sister.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: On account of her having few chances to interact with anyone outside Hope's Peak, Mukuro doesn't have great social skills. During their first meeting, she asks about Makoto's father and doesn't take the [[DaddyIssues hint to stop.]]
* NoSocialSkills: She was raised by a cult.
* StockholmSyndrome: It's unlikely Mukuro wanted to be brought to Hope's Peak at the beginning. By the time Kyoko and Makoto find her, she's defending the church for kidnapping her.
* {{Woobie}}: Mukuro had a very tough life.

!! Junko Enoshima

A resident of Hope's Peak. She is Murkuro's sister.

----

* BlatantLies: Junko tells Kyoko she killed pried Mukuro from her father's "cold, dead hands", then takes it back as a joke. Yeah, right.
* [[spoiler:EldritchAbomination]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: For as much as she's able to, Junko does seem to love Mukuro.
* TheGadfly: Junko loves getting a rise out of Makoto.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Other]]

!! Gundham Tanaka

A hermit living in the forest behind Hope's Peak. He has an intense hatred of Hope's Peak and claims to be a sorcerer. He is accompanied by four hamsters called the Dark Devas of Destruction.

----

* AmbiguouslyHuman: Nagito refers to Gundham as a human, but Gundham denies this and displays abilities normal humans definitely do not have. When asked directly what he is, he only says he is 'a knight.'
* CassandraTruth: [[RewatchBonus Most of Gundham's dialogue actually makes sense.]] However, the otherworldliness of his claims plus his natural inclination for dramatics and exaggeration stop Kyoko from believing him.
* DarkIsNotEvil: A lot of Gundham's boasting includes calling himself a demon/evil/etc., but he's the only real opposition to Hope's Peak.
* LargeHam: Gundham is very into dramatics. He even tries to embellish a story Kyoko is telling him ''while'' she's telling him it.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler:He has a battle to the death with [[EldritchAbomination Nagito]]. While he loses, he [[BreakYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu injures Nagito.]]]]
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: The Devas aren't seen doing anything that regular animals cannot, but they act far more intelligent than real hamsters.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Gundham ''tries'' but he doesn't seem to grasp that Kyoko doesn't know about things like the Gate and the Elder Ones.

Kyoko's grandfather. He took her in and raised her after her father left.

----

* [[spoiler:EvilAllAlong: Fuhito works for Nagito.]]
* EvilCounterpart: To [[spoiler:''Kyoko'']] of all people. [[spoiler:While Kyoko fights and struggles against the Deep Ones until the end, Fuhito gladly goes along with their plans.]]
* FamilyHonor: Kyoko mentions that Fuhito and his father are obsessed with their family line.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Fuhito is incredibly dismissive toward Kyoko's concerns about the Hope's Peak case. [[spoiler:Of course he is, he's working for them.]]
* GreatDetective: Mostly retired, but still this.
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:Fuhito is presumably rewarded for his service and taken to Atua's sanctuary to live out the rest of his life.]]
* ShipperWithAnAgenda: Makoto is the only boy he's ever approved of for Kyoko. [[spoiler:Keeping her in Makoto's life is crucial to Hope's Peak's plans.]]

!! Chiaki Nanami

The identity of the body found at Hope's Peak.

----

* AllForNothing: [[spoiler:Chiaki dies before she can reach Hajime. Even if she did get to him, it's unlikely he would have gone with her.]]
* GamerChick: Her apartment has a bunch of video games.
* MercyKill: In some ways, Chiaki's death was this. [[spoiler:More specifically, Izuru's decision not to revive her comes across this way.]]

!! Shuichi Saiharu

A fellow detective and childhood friend of Kyoko.

----

* IWarnedYou: Shuichi tries to talk Kyoko into dropping the case and says this when she returns sometimes later.
* NothingIsScarier: Shuichi refuses to explain what happened to him on Angie's island.
* ScrewThisImOutOfHere: Shuichi ''refuses'' to help with the Hope's Peak case on account of what happened last time he got invovled with them.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Shuichi appears a couple of times and his primary role is to warn Kyoko's she in over her head. Offscreen, however, he warns Jin Kirigiri his daughter is in trouble, prompting him to arrive in person. Without Jin, Kyoko wouldn't have learnt several [[AwfulTruth Awful Truths]] or escaped [[spoiler:the asylum.]]

!! Sayaka Maizono

An actress with the local theatre and Makoto's childhood friend.

----

* ChildhoodFriend: To Makoto.
* ExcellentJudgeOfCharacter: She immediately realizes Junko is trouble. More impressively, a flashback shows [[spoiler:she also realized something was strange about Kyoko's immediate attraction to Makoto.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: For Makoto and Kyoko.

!! Yasuhiro Hagakure

A local homeless man. He is well known to the police for his antics and various scams over the years. Makoto is the only person on somewhat good terms with him.

----

* TheEndIsNigh: Yasuhiro is most often seen spouting conspriacy theories and at once point, is implied to have been holding one of these signs. Surprisingly, he's not connected to Hope's Peak.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: The only person who can put up with him is [[FriendToAllLivingThings Makoto.]]
* HiddenDepths: Kyoko notes that despite his apparent idiocy and his tendency to scam and anger people, no one has ever been able to arrest or catch him. [[spoiler:He's also a genuine spirit channeler.]]
