A mysterious masked archer who makes his presence known just as Mayor Oliver Queen ramps ups his anti-crime efforts with the intent to thwart those efforts. He appears as the new District Attorney of Star City in Season Five.

* AccuserOfTheBrethren: Since his actions in Season One, Oliver has been trying to atone, and works harder to avoid killing where he doesn't have to. Prometheus, however, is out to put Oliver to task for the killings he carried out four years prior, caring nothing for any efforts Oliver's been making to change.
* AdaptationalNameChange: None of the versions of Prometheus were named Simon Morrison.
* AdaptationDyeJob: He's blonde in the comics. Here, he has dark brown hair.
* AdaptationOriginConnection:
** In the comics, Prometheus's origin had nothing to do with Green Arrow. While comics Prometheus was also on a vendetta against the "forces of justice" due to his parents getting murdered, it was not Green Arrow who killed his parents. Comics Prometheus also has a beef with superheroes in general, not one hero in particular. In addition, the hero that Prometheus is a [[EvilCounterpart dark mirror]] of is typically Batman rather than Green Arrow.
** Furthermore, comics Prometheus had no connection with Talia al Ghul, never being trained by her or the League of Assassins.
* AdaptationalVillainy: Adrian Chase is an AntiHero in the comics. Here, not so much.
* AdaptationalWimp. Zig-zagged. This version of Prometheus doesn't have the advanced technology that allowed him to replicate the fighting skills of every superhero in the DC Universe and is unable to detect everyone's weaknesses, but he most definitely has enough skill to combat Green Arrow and his allies.
* AllForNothing: Despite his smugness, his only real victory he ever had was killing Samantha Clayton, all of his other plans to make Oliver kill him and/or break him failed in the end.
* AmbiguousSituation:
** His lack of definitive reaction to Church telling him Oliver's identity raises the question of whether Prometheus already knew it. If nothing else, he seems to have already been aware that the Hood and the Green Arrow are one and the same. The revelation of his alliance with Talia makes it likely that she told him, but it remains unconfirmed. Considering his high intelligence, it's equally possible that Chase deduced Oliver's identity on his own.
** As of "What We Leave Behind", Prometheus's identity has only been implied, and he himself has given no real clues. Team Arrow hypothesizes that he's the illegitimate son of Justin Claybourne, which is later proven true. His identity is revealed in bits and pieces over the course of Season Five; "Fighting Fire With Fire" reveals that he, not Vigilante, is Adrian Chase, while "Checkmate" confirms this identity to be a mere alias, with his real name being Simon Morrison.
** In "Honor Thy Fathers", Chase appears to cross the DespairEventHorizon after being told of his father's intent to disown him and doesn't resist being defeated and arrested, but the events of the next two episodes -- the last in the season -- strongly suggest that he was intending to be captured, raising the question of whether or not the revelation had any impact on him at all.
* AnalogyBackfire: He claims that he calls himself "Prometheus" because his namesake took power from the gods for playing judge, jury, and executioner as Oliver did. The mythical Prometheus, however, took power from the gods in the name of ''helping'' humanity, something the villain consistently fails to do by murdering scores of people.
* AndStarring: In the series OBB.
* ArchEnemy: To Oliver Queen. Prometheus bitterly hates Oliver Queen and has dedicated his entire life to destroying his. The only other BigBad to have had such a personal vendetta against Oliver is Slade, but unlike Slade who was [[WeUsedToBeFriends once an ally]], Prometheus is Oliver's sworn enemy straight from the get-go. Considering Oliver is willing to ally with Slade ''and'' Malcolm Merlyn if it means stopping Prometheus, an argument can be made that he is Oliver's worst enemy by far.
* ArtifactAlias: Once his identity is exposed, Prometheus has little if any use for the name "Adrian Chase", but everyone keeps calling him that, similar to Hunter Zolomon being incorrectly called "Jay Garrick" (at least until the ''real'' Jay is unmasked). Even people he has no reason to hide his identity from know him as "Adrian Chase". An inattentive viewer may not even realise that it isn't his real name.
* AvengingTheVillain: His father, Justin Claybourne, was a corrupt and cold-hearted man who cheerfully exploited the suffering of others to line his own pockets before being killed by the Hood. This doesn't stop Prometheus from seeking to avenge him (indeed, Claybourne's crimes don't seem to enter his son's thinking at all). His campaign against Oliver also indirectly helps his mentor, Talia, avenge her father, the noble but villainous Ra's. However, he learns that his father was going to disown him because he was ashamed of him, a fact that affects Chase in a certain way, but not enough to cease his crusade against Oliver.
* AxCrazy: It's clear Prometheus is not a stable man, especially since he has a deranged obsession with the Hood right down to recreating his murder scenes to a T. This is later brought up in detail in "Honor Thy Fathers", where Prometheus learns from Oliver that his father, Justin Claybourne, was planning on disowning him due to him being mentally ill. It reaches its apex in "Lian Yu"; Simon intends to die and take everyone on Lian Yu, allies and enemies alike, with him, all just to settle his insane grudge against Oliver.
* BadassBaritone: The voice changer he uses gives him one. His regular speaking voice is more of a medium-pitched rasp.
* BadassInANiceSuit: In his civilian identity, he is usually seen wearing a suit.
* BadassNormal: The first ''Series/{{Arrow}}'' BigBad since Merlyn to have no out of the ordinary powers whatsoever. Yet he's able to go toe-to-toe with Oliver, who by this stage is a contender for WorldsStrongestMan. Prometheus is even able to cow the metahuman Black Siren into working for him.
* BadBoss: Prometheus has no problem with manhandling any minions that talk back to him or question his orders and, as shown in the season finale, he's also perfectly willing to blow Lian Yu up with the entirety of his forces still on the island so long as it wipes out almost everyone Oliver cares about.
* BastardBastard: He's the illegitimate child of Justin Claybourne, a corrupt drugs exec who engineered a strain of tuberculosis as a bioweapon then inflated the cure at outrageous costs. Considering that Prometheus is killing innocent people left and right all to settle a grudge against Oliver, the apple didn't fall far from the tree.
* BatmanGambit: He tells Oliver he's always ten steps ahead. He's not kidding. Prometheus has predicted and planned for Oliver's every move from the get-go, playing him like a chess piece straight into each of his traps.
* BecomingTheMask: He claims that Oliver helped him discover who he really was, which is the SerialKiller known as Prometheus.
* BerserkButton: He really doesn't like it when his minions question him or betray him. Nor does he like it when someone else tries to kill Green Arrow first or interfere with his agenda, even if indirectly.
* BigBad: Of Season Five, particularly after he kills Tobias Church in the fifth episode and ramps up ''his'' plans to take on Green Arrow. Turns out he is actually in a BigBadDuumvirate with Talia Al Ghul, though between the two of them, Prometheus is still TheHeavy.
* BigBadEnsemble: In Season Five with Tobias Church, who wants to conquer the city, while Prometheus wants to destroy Green Arrow. After Prometheus kills Church, Vigilante becomes the other half of the BigBadEnsemble, as he targets anyone whom he considers guilty, which eventually puts him at odds with Prometheus once he targets Oliver for his supposed corruption as Mayor.
* BigBadFriend: His civilian identity is district attorney Adrian Chase, and he maneuvered himself into becoming a good friend of Oliver Queen, when all along he was the one causing trouble throughout the city.
* BreakTheBadass: "Kapiushon" has Prometheus trying this on Oliver, and succeeding for a time. He later gets a taste of this himself in "Honor Thy Fathers" upon learning his father was planning on disowning him due to him being insane.
* BreakThemByTalking: "Kapiushon" focuses on Prometheus doing this on Oliver. He succeeds, though Oliver's friends are eventually able to help him heal.
* CantKillYouStillNeedYou: In a very odd example. Prometheus doesn't really ''need'' Oliver alive per se, but he wants Oliver to remain alive so Prometheus can thoroughly break him and extend his suffering for as long as possible.
* CastAsAMask: When he wears his mask, Prometheus's [[BadassBaritone deep voice]] is provided by Michael Dorn to hide his true identity, played by Josh Segarra.
* CelebrityParadox:
** ''Franchise/StarTrek'' has been mentioned several times in the Series/{{Arrowverse}}. Michael Dorn, his uncredited voice actor, plays one of the main characters of ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration''[[note]]Said character is also the TropeNamer for TheWorfBarrage, TheWorfEffect, WorfHadTheFlu and KlingonPromotion[[/note]].
** Also, an episode of ''Series/TheFlash2014'' mentions the ''Franchise/LawAndOrder'' franchise. His actor plays a RecurringCharacter on ''Series/ChicagoPD'', which takes place [[SharedUniverse in the same universe]] as the shows from said franchise.
* TheChessmaster: Few characters have shown the level of control that Prometheus has; he has orchestrated every bad thing in Oliver's life ever since he made himself known in Season Five. Oliver spends the season playing a deadly game of chess with him, but always on the losing side. By "Fighting Fire with Fire", he's managed to maneuver Oliver into declaring the Green Arrow a criminal. His manipulation is so powerful that even after his identity is revealed to the heroes, he can still walk around in broad daylight and talk with them, without them being able to do anything about it.

* ChoiceOfTwoWeapons: Wields a sword and a set of throwing stars.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: He betrayed Oliver's trust in ways too many to count, betrayed his own wife by murdering her, betrays Black Siren by lying about sparing Quentin, and ultimately betrayed all of his allies by planning to let them die in his plan to destroy Lian Yu.
* ColdBloodedTorture: "Kapiushon" is essentially an entire episode of Prometheus enacting horrifying physical, psychological, and emotional tortures against Oliver.
* CompositeCharacter:
** His character incorporates elements from Komodo and Simon Hurt; he's a masked evil archer like the former, but has the latter's obsession with destroying one particular hero. Furthermore, his ''real'' name is Simon Morrison, which is both the first name of Simon Hurt and Simon Lacroix (Komodo), while "Morrison" is a nod to his creator in the comics, Creator/GrantMorrison.
** He's revealed to be Adrian Chase, who in the comics is the alter-ego of Vigilante. However, Vigilante himself is also present alongside Prometheus as a different character. It turns out that "Chase" is just an alias, though everyone keeps referring to him by that name.
** Him working for Talia al Ghul, who is the [[GreaterScopeVillain hidden mastermind]], is a near cut-and-paste of Bane from ''Film/TheDarkKnightRises''.
* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: Prometheus has several stark contrasts to his predecessor {{Big Bad}}s.
** Aside from Malcolm Merlyn, Prometheus is the only main antagonist to be a BadassNormal, with Slade Wilson being enhanced by Mirakuru, Ra's al Ghul having supernatural longevity due to the Lazarus Pit, and Damien Darhk possessing powerful blood magic.
** He's one of two main antagonists whose entire villainy is motivated by a personal vendetta against Oliver Queen, the other being Slade Wilson, but unlike Slade, Prometheus's beef with Oliver began during his days operating as a superhero. He's also the only antagonist with '''no''' intention of killing Oliver Queen, instead wanting to destroy his life so Oliver will wish he was dead.
** He's unusual in the fact that ''Series/{{Arrow}}'' doesn't usually play the season long "who's the villain under the mask?" guessing game that ''Series/TheFlash2014'' is really fond of, especially with the villain pretending to be the hero's friend to get closer to them (Brother Blood being the closest ''Arrow'' came to this).
** In addition, Prometheus is the only main antagonist who isn't backed by an organization of loyal followers and extensive resources; Malcolm Merlyn led the Tempest, Slade Wilson was the true authority behind Sebastian Blood's Blood Cult, Ra's al Ghul was the head of the League of Assassins, while Damien Darhk was the leader of HIVE. Prometheus mainly operates alone, with his only allies being Evelyn, Talia, and anyone he can intimidate into helping.
** However, the biggest contrast is that Prometheus is the only BigBad to be an equal to Oliver in terms of fighting ability, as all of his predecessor antagonists had overwhelmed Oliver at some point, with Prometheus instead showing what makes him so dangerous [[ManipulativeBastard is his brain]].
* CoolMask: A black scarecrow-like facade that goes well with his psychotic crimes.
* CopKiller: Killed a lot of SCPD officers when he started to operate in Star City.
* TheCorrupter: Was able to turn Evelyn again Oliver, although considering she already had her issues with Ollie, it didn't take much convincing on his part.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: WordOfGod said that Oliver bears a "measure of responsibility" for Prometheus's creation. Sure enough, his vendetta against Oliver was sparked by the death of his father, who was one of the Hood's victims.
* CrusadingLawyer: Adrian Chase takes over from Laurel as an ace district attorney who can worm his way out of the hardest of cases.
* DarkIsEvil: Prometheus is a [[EvilWearsBlack black-clad]] EvilCounterpart to Green Arrow, works primarily in [[EvilIsNotWellLit low lighting]], speaks with a modulated [[EvilSoundsDeep deep, sepulchral voice]], and beneath his mask, has dark hair.
* DevilInPlainSight: Once Oliver and the team discover who he really is under the mask, he continues walking about in broad daylight as the District Attorney, to [[EvilGloating constantly remind them that there's nothing they can do to expose him]].
* DidntSeeThatComing: Adrian only had one real hiccup: a random shooter attacked City Hall. He hurts and kills several people. A bullet hits Chase in the shoulder and he nearly ends up in the second category. It might be the only time he used his Adrian Chase persona to actually help catch somebody and not to manipulate Oliver -- clearly, he was unhappy his plan was nearly cut short.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Oliver killed his corrupt father who he never personally knew. So Prometheus devotes his entire life to ruining Oliver's in every possible way. His dedication is so impressive that even when his primary motivation is undermined (his father never loved him and was going to disown him) he still sticks to his goals of making Oliver hit rock bottom.
* TheDreaded: By Episode 5x05, Church is thoroughly terrified of him. With good reason, as Prometheus kills him at the end.
* DrivenToSuicide: After Oliver refuses to kill him one too many times, Prometheus takes matters into his own hands and blows his own brains out, to trigger the explosives set on Lian Yu.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Killing one of the few publicly non-corrupt cops while he was off duty and on his way home to his wife.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: DeconstructedTrope. Prometheus is doing all this out of revenge for his father being killed by the Hood, despite said father being an AssholeVictim who is later revealed to have wanted to disown his son for being a psychopath. In his civilian disguise as Adrian Chase, he's also married, but he kills his wife Doris when she tries to stop him from getting revenge on Oliver.
* EvilAllAlong: He initially appears as the hard-nosed, well-intentioned District Attorney of Star(ling) City, and even becomes a friend to Oliver. It's all an act.
* EvilChancellor: As the city's new DA, he's one of the mayor's top advisers and confidants outside of his own team.
* EvilCounterpart: Prometheus serves as the exact antithesis to Green Arrow; he seems to be targeting anyone who might be successful in cleaning up Star City. He even recruits vigilantes to help him, like Evelyn. He even invokes the Hood since he chooses victims whose names are anagrams of people off the List, in contrast to the actual people on the List who more or less deserved to die. This extends to their civilian identities too, where he's a very high ranking member of Star City's government, much like Oliver. In addition, both he and Oliver were motivated to take up arms by the deaths of their fathers, both were trained by Talia al-Ghul. The key difference is Oliver strives to better than his father just as his father had wished, while for Prometheus it served as a StartOfDarkness and he became far worse than his father ever was.
* EvilGloating: After Team Arrow uncovers his true identity, Prometheus just ''has'' to gloat about how well he's played them, how they can't stop him, and how he'll ruin Oliver's life.

* EvilSoundsDeep: Like the Dark Archer and Brother Blood before him, he uses a voice modulator to hide his identity. And like Zoom, his masked alter-ego [[CastAsAMask has a different actor voicing him]].
* EvilSoundsRaspy: His natural voice has a pretty sinister rasp, which becomes even more evident when he shouts.
* EvilTwin: He mirrors Green Arrow so well, his Prometheus identity might as well be a shadow copy. A cop even mistook Prometheus for Green Arrow the first time he showed up.
* EvilWearsBlack: He wears an all-black version of Oliver's first outfit.
* EvilVersusEvil: Prometheus conflicts with Tobias Church over the latter's desire to kill the Green Arrow, and later, he fights with Vigilante to keep him from killing Oliver and denying Prometheus his revenge.
* EvilerThanThou:
** Between him and his partner/mentor Talia Al-Ghul, Prometheus comes across as a lot more evil and despicable. While Talia is far from innocent and her reasons for ruining Oliver's life are likewise disproportionate, she does show some honor and restraint in her actions. Prometheus shows none and is perfectly willing to blow Lian Yu to pieces while she and everyone else working for him are still on it.
** Retroactively, Prometheus serves as this to every other Arrow BigBad thus far. While every previous BigBad in one way or another did terrible things, they had at least some justification for their actions; Malcolm [[LoveMakesYouEvil turned evil because of]] the death of [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes his wife]], Slade was infected by [[PsychoSerum the Mirakuru]] which, along with Shado's death, drove him insane (and once the Mirakuru eventually detoxed out of his body, he proved willing to help Oliver again). Ra's Al-Ghul was a NobleDemon and Damien Darhk wanted to [[WellIntentionedExtremist make the world a better place]] for his family. Conversely, Prometheus murders his wife (the closest thing he had to a MoralityPet) and [[NeverMyFault blames Oliver for it]], shows no restraint in massacring innocent people, and is even willing to murder his own allies to get what he wants. His FreudianExcuse gets weaker and more pathetic with every atrocity he commits.
* {{Expy}}: He takes a lot of queues from the ComicBook/{{Joker}}, being the psychotic ArchEnemy and EvilCounterpart of TheHero who is a Batman analogue. He is deeply obsessed with ruining the hero's life, being completely depraved of humanity and dedicates his entire life to his cause. This becomes even more apparent in Season Six where he returns as a Vertigo induced hallucination to haunt Oliver, very much like Joker did to Batman in ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamKnight'', establishing himself as the one enemy Oliver can never be truly rid of.

* FalseFriend: Adrian Chase has apparently been a friend and ally to Oliver since his debut. As it turns out, he's been conspiring to ruin Oliver's life all along.
* FauxAffablyEvil: His public persona is a hard-nosed but well-meaning friend to Oliver, hiding the vengeful, deranged psychopath he truly is. After TheReveal, he acts creepily chummy to Oliver even when torturing him.
* {{Foil}}: Aside from being an EvilCounterpart to Green Arrow, he also serves as foils to some previous {{Big Bad}}s.
** Like Malcolm Merlyn's Dark Archer persona, Prometheus is a dark mirror of the hero's alter-ego. Oliver spent his season trying to bring Malcolm down, but Prometheus is the one trying to bring Oliver down. Malcolm is a powerful businessman with many resources, while Prometheus mainly operates solo. Malcolm, for all his flaws, loves his children and doesn't want to hurt them (although he does so inadvertently more than once), while the only member of Prometheus's family we see him interact with dies for trying to convince him to abandon his murderous crusade.
** Like Slade Wilson, Prometheus has a personal vendetta against Oliver Queen, and spends the season playing TheChessmaster to destroy the hero's life. However, Slade was once an ally and mentor, through some unfortunate circumstances felt betrayed by Oliver and came to hate him; Oliver's vigilante activities in Season One directly impacted Prometheus, with his father being killed by the Hood. Prometheus subsequently trains under Oliver's mentors rather than mentoring Oliver himself. In the end, unlike Slade, who pulls a HeelFaceTurn after taking time to reflect on his relationship with Oliver, Prometheus would [[DrivenToSuicide literally]] rather die than ever forsake his crusade against the man he hates.
** Like [[Series/TheFlash2014 Hunter Zolomon/Zoom]], Prometheus is an EvilCounterpart to his enemy, dresses in black, uses a [[CastAsAMask fake deep voice]], demonstrates sadistic and sociopathic tendencies, and poses as an ally to manipulate the hero. However, Zoom initially had no personal grudge against the Flash, while Prometheus's hatred for Green Arrow is evident from day one. Zoom also mainly used proxies to do his dirty work, while Prometheus does almost everything himself. Their backstories also reflect and contrast each other: Both their fathers were evil men responsible for the death and suffering of innocents, but unlike Zoom's father, Prometheus's was killed instead of being arrested, didn't kill Prometheus's mother, and forms the basis for Prometheus's grudge against Green Arrow.
* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: He appeared to be driven by revenge over Oliver killing his father, except it's later revealed he knew his father never loved him and still didn't care. He further shows how depraved of humanity he is by killing his own MoralityPet and thereby pulling a RedemptionRejection.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: He spent the past four years training to be good enough to beat Oliver and that includes spending time being trained by Oliver's last mentor before he came back to Starling City -- Talia Al-Ghul.
* GeniusBruiser: He's a very capable fighter, and, as his campaign against the Green Arrow demonstrates, he has quite a mind for psychological warfare and long-term planning.
* GuileHero: In "Who Are You?", he is able to show off just how clever a District Attorney he is, where he uses a LoopholeAbuse to get him and John Diggle out of hot water and keep the latter away from General Walker's custody, who was out to execute him. Eventually it gets subverted with the reveal that he's Prometheus and is actually a ManipulativeBastard.
* GutturalGrowler: His natural voice, unlike the disguise's smooth baritone, has a distinct raspy growl.
* TheHeavy: While it's revealed Talia Al-Ghul trained him and is the other mastermind behind Season Five, Prometheus is still the main threat that Team Arrow has to deal with.
* HeCleansUpNicely: While posing as DA Adrian Chase, he shows that he can wear a rather nice suit when not dressed in his armory.
* HeroKiller:
** While he didn't, and doesn't want to, kill Oliver, Prometheus does what no one else ever did: He breaks Oliver's spirit so completely that he wants to stop being the Green Arrow. Oliver eventually recovers, but it's still a level of damage that no one else has managed to date.
** His actions in "Lian Yu", while they failed to kill any of the main cast, still caused major, lasting damage to Team Arrow, leaving John with potentially crippling nerve damage, as well as nearly killing Thea and leaving her comatose.
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: SubvertedTrope. He's killed several SCPD officers, and was believed by Team Arrow to be a member of the force as he had access to their files/evidence lock-up. As it turns out, he's not actually an SCPD officer, but he did have access to their facilities through his DA position.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** A really deranged example, seeing as he hates Oliver for his actions as the Hood in Season One, yet has no problem killing scores of people to get back at him. It gets more deranged when it's revealed he's the hard-nosed District Attorney Adrian Chase, real name Simon Morrison.
** Throughout "Kapiushon", while he does make a few semi-valid points, Prometheus ultimately isn't accusing Oliver of anything that he himself isn't also guilty of. Most galling is when he accuses Oliver of using his father's death to "justify a killing spree", which is ''exactly'' what Prometheus has been doing since he first appeared.
** Despite his entire crusade being built around taking revenge for the murder of his father, Prometheus has no qualms about threatening Oliver's son to torment him.
** In "Disbanded", he calls Oliver an unpredictable, savage animal, who loves murder. The episode ends with him brutalizing one of his guards with a pen, then driving off into the night with blood on his face, all while whistling a cheerful tune. Projecting much, creep?
** Throughout Season Five, Prometheus repeatedly claims that everything Oliver touches dies. By the end of the season, he's killed his own wife and proved perfectly willing to kill every one of his own allies as part of his plan to ruin Oliver.

* InNameOnly: The creators specifically emphasized that this Prometheus would be an original character. They weren't kidding. He heavily diverges from his comics counterpart in appearance, where he wore a yellow and purple suit of armor rather than a black version of Green Arrow's suit. He was also a dark mirror of Batman rather than Green Arrow. Furthermore, in ''Arrow'', his goals are focused on a vendetta against one single hero who he is AvengingTheVillain for, rather than being opposed to superheroes in general.
* InTheBlood: Both of his parents were/are really horrible people who don't bat an eye to human suffering. Small wonder he turned out to be a vicious monster.
* InvincibleVillain: Played with; unlike previous ''Arrow'' {{Big Bad}}s, Prometheus is on more-or-less equal footing with Oliver, and only wins in their first fight due to luck. Even his more outlandish feats (such as [[CurbStompBattle massacring an entire police unit single-handedly]]) aren't too far off from what Oliver himself has pulled. However, what he lacks in physical ability, he more than makes up for with his unparalleled strategic smarts. True to his word, Prometheus is ''always'' "ten steps ahead", being able to anticipate Oliver's ''every'' move, and [[TheChessmaster strings him along like a puppet into every one of his traps]].
* IronicNickname: He chose the alias "Prometheus" because he saw the mythological figure as someone who stood up to self-righteous gods (with whom he equates Green Arrow). He either disregards or doesn't realise that the original Prometheus was a champion of mankind who defied the gods to share their power with humanity, while this Prometheus is a remorseless murderer who targets innocent people to settle a grudge he has against a single man.
* ItsAllAboutMe: In the end, nothing matters more to Prometheus than his grudge against Oliver. In "Checkmate", he murders his own wife when she tries to convince him to stop, although he's clearly affected by doing so.
* ItsPersonal:
** Everyone he kills in his first few episodes (barring Church and the police escort) is an anagram of somebody the Hood crossed off the List in Season One. It turns out that Oliver killed Prometheus's father, who was a CorruptCorporateExecutive responsible for releasing a weaponised strain of tuberculosis on innocent people. It becomes even more personal on Chase's end when Oliver brings in his wife Doris to try and convince Chase to turn himself in. This results in Chase killing his wife, [[NeverMyFault blaming Oliver]], and redoubling his efforts to destroy him. Few if any villains have ever hated Oliver as much as Prometheus does.
** As Prometheus's crimes pile up, the animosity becomes extremely personal on Oliver's end as well. By the end of Season Five, Oliver is willing to team up with previous arch-enemies Malcolm Merlyn and Slade Wilson for the sake of bringing Prometheus down.
* {{Jerkass}}: Even for a deranged serial killer, Prometheus is a harsh, brutal man to his own allies. The only exceptions seem to be his wife (whom he ends up killing anyway) and Talia (his EvilMentor, whom he betrays and leaves to die at the end of Season Five).

** He murders various innocent people whose names happen to be anagrams of names on Oliver's List from Season One, all just to screw with Oliver's head.

** Spends the entirety of "Kapiushon" brutally torturing Oliver, trying to break his spirit. Special mention goes to him staging a scenario where he appears to murder Evelyn right in front of Oliver, again, just to mess with his head.
** His final act in life is a single, horrible act of cruelty; he commits suicide to trigger the DeadManSwitch that sets off a series of explosives that ravage Lian Yu with Oliver's friends (and all of Chase's own allies) on it, all just to cause Oliver one last dose of pain.
* KickTheMoralityPet: He murders his own wife when she tries to convince him to turn himself in.
* KickTheSonOfABitch:
** Murdering Tobias Church, a murderous drug dealer and unrepentant criminal. He didn't have any kind of altruistic motive, but no one's about to feel sorry for Church.
** Leaving his team to die on Lian Yu in the Season Five finale. As cruel an act as it may be, it's hard to sympathize with the victims of Prometheus's treachery (Talia, who helped set Prometheus's rampage in motion; Evelyn, who double-crossed Oliver and Team Arrow with zero remorse; and Black Siren, who followed Prometheus's sadistic DeadPersonImpersonation game).
* KillTheOnesYouLove: He did sincerely love his wife, but not enough to let go of his crusade against Oliver. To keep her from testifying against him, he is then forced to murder her.
* KnightOfCerebus: Season Five was dark to begin with and this show has had villains that have caused the show to become darker once they have appeared, but Prometheus brings with him the kind of darkness that's enough to send the people of Star City into a frenzy once word of his crimes is made known. It only gets worse as the season goes on, especially when his identity is revealed. "Kapiushon", possibly the series' darkest episode to date, is focused around Prometheus's efforts to break Oliver's spirit, which he succeeds in doing. His actions in the season finale make things darker still; no other villain has gone so far as to threaten to kill Oliver's son right in front of him, or to kill himself and wipe out his own allies just to kill Oliver's team for the sake of making him suffer. Prometheus might just be ''Arrow'''s darkest villain yet.
* LackOfEmpathy: Prometheus places no value on innocent life, killing at will for the sake of making Oliver suffer. As the season wears on, it becomes very clear that he might be the most depraved villain on the show thus far. Even Damien Darhk, arguably the most immoral of the previous major villains, did not take as much delight in killing and torturing people as Prometheus does.

* LoopholeAbuse: Since there was no other way, he made John Diggle hit him so he would have a reason to prosecute him and thus keep him away from General Walker, who would have killed him.

* ManipulativeBastard: Part of his planned revenge against Oliver is to turn his friends against him and convince Oliver that everything he touches dies. Prometheus first displays his impressive manipulative ability by tricking Oliver into accidentally killing Billy Malone, calculating Oliver's every move so that Oliver shot down Billy wearing Prometheus's suit. Then it's revealed this is only the beginning, with Prometheus showing just how much he knows about everyone Oliver has ever encountered, even the heroes from other shows, knowing about the existence of Earth-2 Black Siren trapped in Central City, as well as Sara Lance traveling with the Legends. He's able to use all this information to stage Laurel's return to life, when it was actually her evil Earth-2 counterpart. It's only when his identity as Adrian Chase is revealed that people do realize how truly manipulative he is -- he's infiltrated every part of Oliver's life and played everyone like puppets on strings.
* MaskOfSanity: He's very skilled in hiding his real nature, always keeping a calm and cold demeanor on his face. Underneath it, he's very unhinged and psychotic, killing in cold blood without a second's hesitation and clearly enjoying it.
* MasterActor: No one, not even his own wife, ever suspected that "Adrian Chase" was Prometheus until it was too late.
* TheMentallyDisturbed: Even as a younger man, he was psychologically unbalanced, which led to his father wanting to disown him. Oliver killing his father didn't create Prometheus's insanity; it just let him focus it.
* MindRape: Everything he does to Oliver is designed to psychologically torture him. It's most evident in "Kapiushon", where he combines extensive physical, mental, and emotional torture to break his spirit.
* MirrorMatch: As a dark mirror of the Green Arrow, battles with Prometheus are very even.
* MoralMyopia:
** He's out to avenge his father, who was a CorruptCorporateExecutive responsible for the suffering and deaths of many innocent people. Furthermore, he seems to consider murdering innocent people a perfectly acceptable way of getting back at Oliver, not caring in the slightest that those people might have had families of their own.
** Judging from his speeches in "Kapiushon", Prometheus seems to genuinely believe that he has the moral high ground in his conflict with Oliver. Even when Oliver admits that he enjoys killing (though it's debatable, to say the least, if he actually does), he's not confessing to anything that doesn't equally apply to Prometheus. This comes up in "Missing", as well; Chase believes that he's perfectly justified in dragging Oliver's son into their feud because Oliver did the same with Chase's wife. He ignores that Oliver only brought his wife into the situation to try and talk Chase into ending his crusade (which Chase rejected by killing her), while Chase kidnapped William as just another way to hurt Oliver.
** He condemns Oliver for killing criminals, remarking that [[EvenEvilHasLovedOnes they had families]]. What doesn't seem to occur to Prometheus is that the innocent people he's killed to torment Oliver, the police officers he's murdered, and even Oliver himself also have families.
* MovieSuperheroesWearBlack: Goes from purple armor to a completely black suit similar to that worn by Green Arrow.
* MysteriousPast: What initially makes Prometheus so scary is [[NothingIsScarier nothing is known about him]]. Who is he? Why does he have such an obsession with Green Arrow/Oliver Queen? Where did he learn how to fight? Team Arrow spends the vast majority of the season figuring him out while at the same time trying to put a stop to him.
* MythologyGag: His real name, Simon Morrison, is a mix of Creator/GrantMorrison (who created the comics version of Prometheus) and Simon Hurt (another ''Batman'' villain created by Morrison).
* NamedByTheAdaptation: In the comics, the main Prometheus's real name went unrevealed. In the series, his true name is eventually revealed to be Simon Morrison, with Adrian Chase as an alias he adopted.
* NeverMyFault: He killed his wife when she learned about his secret life and pleaded for him to give up his revenge. He then blames Oliver for it, due to trying to use her to stop him. He even considers it ample reason to kidnap Oliver's son to use against him.

* NotSoSimilar: For all their similarities, there is one major difference: When Oliver realized how far he was falling, he pulled back, or at least tried to. When Adrian realized how far he was falling, he went all in and discarded whatever humanity he had left. This is because Oliver didn't ''choose'' to become a killer and torturer -- it was the unfortunate result of his struggle to survive. Adrian, however, made a conscious choice to become what he was to avenge his father. Hence, Oliver still has his morality and clings to it like a lifeline, while whatever morality Adrian had before his father died, he has long since gotten ditched.
* NothingIsScarier: Team Arrow's theories aside (and even those are unconfirmed), nothing is really known about Prometheus, but he [[AmbiguousSituation may have]] already known Oliver's identity before Church told him. Aside from that, he has knowledge he really shouldn't have access to: he knew about Black Siren being locked up in the S.T.A.R. Labs Pipeline and was able to free her without Team Flash noticing, and knows enough about Sara, the Legends, and time travel to make up a plausible story for "Laurel"'s return. All of this raises some terrifying questions about him. Even with his true identity revealed, Prometheus's vast knowledge of Oliver's allies has yet to be explained.
* ObviouslyEvil: He dresses in a [[EvilWearsBlack darker]] version of the Green Arrow's costume, wears a [[MalevolentMaskedMen terrifying mask]], and has a [[EvilSoundsDeep deep, evil voice]]. Conversely, however, his name ironically evokes a figure from Myth/ClassicalMythology who was a ''champion'' of mankind after betraying the gods.

* OneManArmy: He effortlessly slaughtered a squadron of armed policemen who were escorting Tobias Church to Iron Heights.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: He seemingly wants to kill Green Arrow, and beats Tobias Church to a pulp (and later offs him) for almost beating him to it. Later it's clarified he doesn't want to kill Green Arrow; he just wants to destroy his life so he'll wish he was dead. He even goes so far as to protect Oliver from Vigilante to make sure that he alone can take revenge on Oliver.

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Normally, Prometheus is able to keep his hatred in check whenever he and Oliver confront each other, being able to cooly taunt him without a hint of anger in his voice. It's how he was able to keep up being Oliver's FalseFriend for so long. However, when Oliver brings in Prometheus's wife to try and convince him to stop, causing Prometheus to kill her to keep his vendetta, we finally see his rage consume him. In the following fight, Prometheus doesn't bother with taunts or any verbal warfare -- [[LetsFightLikeGentlemen he drops his blade in return for Oliver dropping his bow]], and the two proceed to brawl all over the building.
* OrnamentalWeapon: He carries a bow and a quiver, but rarely uses them. They seem to mostly be there to complete his EvilCounterpart image.
* PosthumousCharacter: In Season Six, he returns via a Vertigo induced hallucination to continue menacing Oliver.

Oliver once tried to kill Slade Wilson with an ice pick in the middle of his own home while his mother was still in the house, completely under the impression that Slade was nothing more than a concerned citizen and potential benefactor, and even he found what Chase was suggesting absurd.
* TheReveal: Eventually, it's revealed that he's the illegitimate son of Justin Claybourne (one of the Hood's victims from Season One), and that his true identity is District Attorney Adrian Chase (real name Simon Morrison). He was trained by Oliver's old mentor, Talia al Ghul, to get revenge for his father's death.
* RevengeBeforeReason: The revelation that his father never cared about him and sought to disown him does absolutely nothing to dissuade Prometheus from continuing his campaign against Oliver. In addition, his desire for revenge against Oliver over the death of his wife disregards the fact that Chase himself killed her.
* RoguesGalleryTransplant: Prometheus is usually a Batman villain in the comics, though he has gone up against Green Arrow plenty of times before and was even killed by Green Arrow in the comics.
* {{Sadist}}: As demonstrated by his seemingly endless EvilGloating after his identity has been revealed, Prometheus is ''revelling'' in destroying Oliver's life. He even dies perfectly content with the knowledge that the results of his suicide will cause Oliver even more anguish.
* ScarilyCompetentTracker: One of many reasons that Prometheus is such a dangerous person is, with enough time, he can find out dirt on anyone and everyone he puts his resources into. When Oliver confronts Talia Al-Ghul about training him she admits that Prometheus had already figured out a great deal about Oliver before she even told him about Oliver and trained him. Prometheus is also able to find William's location when even Oliver and Felicity couldn't find him.
* SelfDisposingVillain: After Oliver refuses to kill him for the last time, Prometheus simply blows his own brains out.
* SerialKiller: He's killed a number of people all for the reason of getting to Oliver.
* SlasherSmile: The cloth of his mask is shaped into a rather wide grin.
* SmugSmiler: After his identity is exposed, a great deal of Prometheus's EvilGloating is accompanied by a smug grin and even smugger tone of voice. And unfortunately Prometheus can live up to those boasts.
* TheSociopath: He couldn't care less about all the lives caught in the crossfire of his war with Green Arrow, whether they're innocent civilians or [[BadBoss his own loyalists]]. He even murders his own wife, perhaps the only other person besides his mother that he genuinely cares about, when she tries to convince him to stop. The Season Five finale takes this even further; Prometheus uses his own death as just one more way to make Oliver suffer by using a DeadManSwitch to seemingly kill nearly all of the people Oliver loves. He also shows himself, throughout the season, to be a vicious, sadistic, self-important murderer without a shred of empathy or remorse, and who refuses to take responsibility for his own crimes. He even seems to consider himself better than Oliver, despite being guilty of pretty much every crime Oliver's ever committed and more.
* SoreLoser: In the Season Five finale, he's lost in every way that matters -- he failed to get Oliver to kill him, and has to watch as Oliver is a better father to his own son than Adrian's own father was to him. So his last action is to kill himself, setting off the deadman switch that activates all the bombs on Lian Yu in a slightly failed attempt to kill Oliver's loved ones and his own team, just as one final finger to his worst enemy.
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: He is the first villain to actually subvert this. While he has the edge over Oliver psychologically and strategically, physically he is probably the least threatening BigBad thus far on the show. The only villains he could possibly beat are Malcolm Merlyn and Mirakuru-less!Slade. Against Ra's al Ghul, Damien Darhk, and Mirakuru!Slade, he would almost assuredly lose. That being said, he is still skilled enough to keep up with Oliver and give him a close fight, which is no small feat.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: He's obsessed with the Hood/Green Arrow. His victims are chosen because they are anagrams from the List and his throwing stars are Oliver's old arrow heads stolen from SCPD evidence. In "Who Are You" we find out that this applies to '''every hero in the Arrowverse'''. Not only did he break into Team Flash's Pipeline to free Black Siren, but he also knows that Sara was resurrected by Laurel and is traveling in time with the Legends. How he knows all this has yet to be explained, but it makes his character even more terrifying. As he tells Oliver after torturing him, "I know him better than he knows himself."
* StealthHiBye: Can do these much like Oliver can, though Prometheus is usually accompanied by flickering lights.
* StrikeMeDownWithAllOfYourHatred: In "Lian Yu", his plan was to force Oliver to kill him to establish once and for all that Oliver is the savage killer that Chase considers him to be. His other motive for this was to set off a DeadManSwitch that would trigger explosives all over Lian Yu to raze the island and kill everyone on it. When Oliver refuses to kill him, however, Chase just blows his own brains out to achieve the same result.
* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: He whipped an entire squad of armed policemen in "Human Target", yet Artemis was able to get a good shot in the subsequent episode, which may have been because he let her because she was his ally. Still played straight on other occasions though, like when Curtis was actually able to give him a fight.
* SuperheroMovieVillainsDie: Given the intensity of his hatred with Oliver, it was clear that their war would never end until one of them had died. Other than Ra's al-Ghul, he's the only ''Arrow'' BigBad who dies in his debut season with a death that sticks, as Merlyn [[IThoughtYouWereDead faked his death]] while Darhk [[BackFromTheDead was revived]].
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Prometheus seems to take a few cues from Sebastian Blood. Both of them are villains who utilize an alternate identity to gather a team of followers to move against Oliver, both have their voices heavily modulated, both utilize decoys, and their public personas had a working relationship with Oliver. Both Blood and Chase were even TheDragon for figures more powerful than them. However, while Blood didn't have any personal vendetta against Oliver until he started working against the Blood Cult, was somewhat of a NonActionBigBad and was a WellIntentionedExtremist to boot, Prometheus actively tries to represent Oliver's past sins, and can go toe-to-toe with Oliver. Also, while Blood died with a clean conscience knowing he'd helped in the efforts against Slade, Chase died thinking that he'd taken everything from Oliver.

* TakingYouWithMe: Through a combination of a DeadManSwitch and a ThanatosGambit, this was Chase's plan for the Season Five finale; either Oliver kills him (proving Chase right) and sets off the explosives that will destroy Lian Yu, or Chase kills himself, which will have the same result. He opts for the latter in the end, shooting himself in front of Oliver, who is helpless to prevent the island's destruction.
* TeamKiller: As part of his TakingYouWithMe plan in "Lian Yu", he was willing to, and may have succeeded in killing his own team in the attempt to kill Oliver's.

* UngratefulBastard: All of his allies, including Talia (his mentor), Evelyn (his loyal mole), and Black Siren (who placed considerable trust in him), were left to die when he destroyed Lian Yu at the end of Season Five.
* VillainHasAPoint: Downplayed. Prometheus [[{{Hypocrite}} is the]] [[MoralMyopia last person]] who should be making that argument, but he isn't wrong when he points out that the criminals Oliver's killed were people with friends and families of their own. The "truth" that he wants Oliver to admit (that deep down, he enjoys killing) is just as hypocritical, and it's arguable that Oliver doesn't actually enjoy killing -- he just ''thinks'' he does.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity:
** In his civilian identity he's the city's District Attorney. Even after Team Arrow finds out, they cannot expose him [[MutuallyAssuredDestruction without him exposing them in return]], or releasing his grip on whatever DeadManSwitch he has on him at the time, including hostages he's abducted like Susan or later Oliver himself.
** ''Finally'' no longer the case as of the end of "Disbanded", when thanks to the efforts of Felicity, Curtis, and Helix, a video of Prometheus unmasking becomes publicly distributed.
* VillainousLegacy: In Season Six, his influence continues to be felt despite Prometheus's death. Black Siren, who is only a threat to Team Arrow because Prometheus broke her out of the Pipeline, is a major villain, and the after-effects of the destruction of Lian Yu leave Oliver as a single father, Diggle with severe nerve damage, and Thea in a coma. Additionally, Felicity helped to free Cayden James in her effort to defeat Prometheus, which [[EvilIsNotAtoy ultimately led to James himself becoming a major problem]].
* VocalEvolution: Slightly. In his first three appearances, the deep voice produced by his voice changer has a more synthesized, almost robotic tone, but after that, it essentially just becomes Michael Dorn's natural speaking voice.
* WalkingArmory: He's dressed like the Green Arrow and likewise carries a bow, in addition to a sword ''and'' throwing stars, the latter of which he uses to commit his murders (to the point where he becomes known as the "Throwing Star Killer").
* WeaponOfChoice: Surprisingly, ''not'' a bow and arrows (despite carrying them and resembling the Green Arrow), but throwing stars which are made of the arrowheads Oliver used over the years, stolen from SCPD evidence. He also makes liberal use of a sword.
* WickedCultured: In "Disbanded", after murdering the guards tasked with protecting him, he drives back while listening and whistling to the tune of "It's A Beautiful Morning" on the radio.
* WouldHitAGirl: Aside from his female victims, Prometheus has no problem getting physical with Black Siren when she disagrees with him.
* WouldHurtAChild: Threatens Oliver's 10-year old son in "Kapiushon", and later abducts him to use as leverage against Oliver. In "Lian Yu", he goes so far as to threaten to snap William's neck to try and force Oliver into [[StrikeMeDownWithAllOfYourHatred killing him]].
* XanatosGambit: He gives one to Oliver in the Season Five finale. Prometheus rigs Lian Yu with explosives that will blow as soon as his life readings stop, while all of Oliver's friends are still on the island. He then holds Oliver's son, William, hostage and will kill him if Oliver didn't stop him. Thus, Oliver has to decide between letting his son die, or killing Adrian and causing the island to explode. Oliver tries to TakeAThirdOption and disarms Adrian while freeing his son, but Adrian doesn't allow this and [[SelfDisposingVillain shoots himself in the head]] to spite Oliver one last time. It backfires spectacular because by a sheer miracle everyone on Oliver's side save Samantha survived, while everyone on Prometheus' side save Black Siren died.
* YouKilledMyFather: He's the son of Justin Claybourne, a corrupt pharmaceuticals executive whom Oliver killed in Season One as the Hood.

* AdaptationalBadass: Not in terms of his fighting ability, but in terms of his threat level and competence. This Prometheus manages to play TheChessmaster and screw with Oliver's life from the second he walked onto the scene.
