Characters of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series that are part of the citizen of Mobotropolis.

----
!!!From the TV Show

Characters introduced in the WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM show and thus were spared from the lawsuit. Only Maximillian's design really suffered from it, putting him closer in design from the show then how the earlier issues portrayed him.

folder: King Nigel Acorn Formerly Maximillan Acorn

On-Again-Off-Again King of Mobotropolis and father of Princess Sally and King Elias. Was lost in the Zone of Silence for years, where he was mentally manipulated by Ixis Naugus and convinced to offer him the throne. After being freed from the zone, suffering crystallization, getting better, being paralyzed from the waist down, getting better, and finally being poisoned to the point of becoming catatonic before getting better...despite ending up paralyzed once more and a bit senile, he was forced to abdicate the throne. Then he got better and became king once more.

In the post-Super Genesis Wave world, King Acorn is a bit younger and has been restored to full health and mentality as well as openly accepting of Sonic and the Freedom Fighters. Since his original name Maximillian was coined by Ken Penders, his first name was changed to Nigel.

!!! Post Cosmic Wave
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's a fairly jovial fellow and very good natured to many. But, as shown before he allowed Knuckles, Amy and Team Dark to search for the Master Emerald pieces and the Dark Arms in his kingdom, he's not one to be trifled with:
--> Nigel: [After Rouge asks for clearance to search his kingdom] Of course, the openness of your request is appreciated. But I am deeply concerned I'm only being informed [about the Black Arms] now. The Black Arms threaten all of us, and so everyone should be informed of their threat. Commander Towers has my deepest respect. He has done much to reform G.U.N. But the old regime still casts a long shadow. The G.U.N of old put my father on edge. It's made me wary to trust Dr. Eggman and Dr. Snively once. I would be very disappointed if things were to slip back into their old ways. Am I clear?
* CosmicRetcon: The events of the end of Worlds Collide have changed Maximillian. He's no longer enfeebled and losing his mind, and he's much more kind and optimistic, as well as being ruler once more. Sonic even lampshades this is one of the few good changes the Genesis Wave left in it's wake. He's also no longer "Maximilian", but "King Nigel". "King Max" was a name thought up by Ken Penders, so it had to go.
* LaserBlade: In the new universe he has a pair of bracelets like his daughter's that project an energy sword and shield.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: In the new timeline, he's much more willing to hear people out and make wiser decisions for the sake of his kingdom.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Likewise will to defend his kingdom if he has to.
* SameCharacterButDifferent: He's still King Acorn, but without most of the negative traits of the older universe, as well as being slightly younger and no longer sickly. During his introduction, Sonic internally remarks on how his much friendlier disposition is a markedly improvement over the previous version, taking it as a sign that the Genesis Wave might have changed some things for the better.
* Warrior King: King Acorn is now willing and able to fight the bad guys directly, wielding an energy sword and shield similar to his daughter's armblades. He failed, but mainly because he was outnumbered 3-to-1 by the Hooligans. Even then, he was holding his own till Bark waylaid him while he was busy with Nack and Bean.
* WeakButSkilled: He's not a particularly fit guy, but makes up for it with a fairly brutal fighting style.

!!! Pre-Genesis Wave
* AbusiveParents: He's emotionally abusive and dismissive towards Sally, ignoring her accomplishments as leader of the Freedom Fighters and trying to force her to bend to his will. He's not much better to Elias.
* AesopAmnesia: As established in issue 233, he repeatedly dismissed Harvey Who's advice against trusting Kodos, Naugus, and Robotnik, as well as exiling Nate Morgan. One would think after all the times his ignoring Harvey bit him and the kingdom in the ass, he'd actually learn to listen to him.
* ArrangedMarriage: He and Alicia are HappilyMarried, despite being in one of these. His attempts to force Sally into one... haven't gone so well.
* TheArtifact: In universe, as shown by his strict adherence to tradition and desire to restore the monarchy.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Twice. Both times by Ixis Naugus.
* CoolHat: The Crown of Acorns. See previous item.
* CoolSword: The Sword of Acorns. Since been destroyed.
* TheChewToy: In this order, he's been thrown into the Zone of Silence, brainwashed, rescued only to start turning into crystal, being brainwashed again, being paralyzed from the waist down, recovering, and then being poisoned and being wheelchair ridden again. After everything he's been through, Max as prematurely aged and started to go senile.
* DatingWhatDaddyHates: Didn't exactly care for Sonic for quite some time.
* GuileHero: At his best, King Max could be quite cunning, and it was especially noticeable after his attempts to free Elias left him in a wheelchair. When Sally was kidnapped by Nack's gang and the Freedom Fighters can't get the only captured member to talk, Max calmly wheels himself in, dismisses Sonic and his friends, and has his guards beat the prisoner until he's given a location down to the smallest detail. When the Xorda destroy Eggman's empire and he's begging for help, Max forces him to give half of his territory to the Kingdom before even lifting a finger. Granted he admits that Eggman won't keep his end of the bargain, but he decided to LetNoCrisisGoToWaste.
* GrumpyOldMan: Spent a long period of the book always complaining about something or other, grumbling about changes to his kingdom.
* HeadInTheSandManagement: In regards to Kodos, Ixis Naugus, and the original Dr. Robotnik, Harvey Who repeatedly warned him that they couldn't be trusted, but Max refused to heed his warnings and instead relied on the Source of All for guidance. Needless to say, all of Mobius paid the price for Max's idiocy.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: He didn't see Julian Robotnik's true colors until it was too late. As we find out in issue 233, he has a history of this. Harvey Who, his adviser at the time, specifically told him not to trust Warlord Kodos, not to let Ixis Naugus remain in the kingdom, not to exile Nate Morgan, and not to take Robotnik in, but Max ignored him every single time. Possibly justified as Max revealed much earlier that, except for Sally and Elias, the Acorn royal family used a magic pool called "The Source of All" to guide their actions, meaning Max never developed the right skills for ruling. That or the Source told him to trust them for unknown reasons. Either way, there's a reason history has given him the title "Maximillian the Cursed".
* MeaningfulName: His moniker of Maximillian the Cursed. Sad, yes, but fitting, since Max's blind trust in ObviouslyEvil individuals like Kodos, Ixis Naugus, and the original Robotnik led to multiple tragedies, not the least of which was Robotnik turning all of Mobius into a polluted dystopia for ten years.
* NobleBigot: He's prone to prejudices, particularly against Robians, which makes him an easy target for Naugus' manipulations. However, he's usually wise enough to act in spite of his prejudices rather than on them.
* PapaWolf: When Elias is captured by Robotnik's forces, King Max dons his armor, assembles his army, and takes the Sword of Acorns into battle; storming Robotnik's fortress. He personally cut through the Robots to save his son, even dismissing Sonic as his bodyguard with an order to save him as he valued Elias's safety over his own.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Though how reasonable can vary from writer to writer and on Max's own mental state. Though he was at his most reasonable and heroic in between his rescue from Naugus's Brainwashing and his descent into senility. During this period Max started to peel back many of his prejudices and made more calculated decisions, eventually coming to approve of Sonic's relationship with Sally and get his country back on its feet.
* SanitySlippage: After all of the hell he's been through, King Max has started to go senile. By the time of the second Genesis Wave, he's barely coherent.
* ThrowingOffTheDisability: During the one-year TimeSkip on Mobius during Sonic's time in space, he managed to regain the use of his legs, having been wheelchair-bound before then. Sadly, thanks to Anti-Antoine poisoning him and landing him in a temporary coma, he ends up back in the wheelchair.
* TookALevelInJerkass: He's been known as a kind father and has his nicer moments, but just as often he turns around and forces more and more difficulties on his children. Some of this is due to his strict adherence to royal tradition, and some of it's from the sheer amount of trauma he's been through.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Openly resentful of the kingdom's transition to a democratic republic, Maximillian attempted to restore the monarchy by any means necessary, which would lead to Geoffrey and Sonic's trip to the Special Zone and obtaining of a Chaos Emerald...which was then promptly delivered to Naugus. Max would be indirectly responsible for Elias' deposing and the attempt on his life, and the near takeover of the Council of Acorn. All because he didn't like the idea of sharing power with the people.
* Warrior King: During the Great War and during his internment in the Zone of Silence. His attempt to slip back into this role didn't go so well...
* WhyWeAreBummedCommunismFell: Even in his senility, Max is openly resentful about the kingdom's transition to democracy.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: He's only in his late fifties, but all of the trauma he's endured, plus SanitySlippage, has prematurely aged him; he looks more like he's in his late sixties or early seventies.

The caregiver of the Freedom Fighters after they escaped Knothole during Eggman's invasion.

* CoolOldLady: Even with the Freedom Fighters grown and doing their own thing, she'll more then help them out with advice when they need it.
* GoodOldWays: When Sally was younger, she began to expect to be able to rely on technology to be able to make tactical decisions, until Rosie showed her how she wouldn't always be able to depend on it.
* InterspeciesAdoption: She essentially became a second mother to Hope Kintobor.
* ParentalSubstitute: Acted as one to the Freedom Fighters during their childhood.
* SilverVixen: Still look quite cute for someone her age.
* WhatTheHellHero: In issue 159, she gives one to Sonic and Shadow when they're fighting over Hope's injury at the hands of the Metal Sonic Troopers, snapping at them to stop focusing on who's to blame for Hope being injured and to start focusing on actually getting her to a doctor. It stops the fight completely, and the two quickly rush her to the hospital.

!!!From the Games

The kindly mother of young Cream, She is very much a pacifist, never leaving the city of Mobotropolis. She worries extensively about her daughter, but allows her to tag along with the Freedom Fighters regardless. Can be seen in the company of King Acorn of late.

* ActualPacifist: Unlike her daughter, Vanilla doesn't get involved in any action, let alone violence, and firmly stays at home.
* Good Parent: A very caring mother who only wants the best for her daughter and raised Cream like a princess, though in a strict manner, resulting in Cream becoming the incredibly polite girl she is right now.
* Humanoid Female Mobian: Has a distinctly more human build than most of the other Mobian characters.
* OpenMindedParent: Seems to be one. Why else does she allow her six-year-old child to roam around the world and get involved in all sorts of adventures? Though Cream is a lot more capable than she appears and is constantly accompanied and protected by some the world's most famous and powerful heroes, so Vanilla doesn't really have much to worry about.

!! Old Universe Characters (Pre-Genesis Wave)

Characters from the original universe before issue #252. These characters most likely are permanently erased from the new timeline thanks to the Super Genesis Wave.

Sally's brother, who was lost during the Great War and raised on Angel Island. After being reunited with his family, he struggled under the weight of his responsibilities and eventually ran away from home. Nevertheless, after marrying his wife Megan, he returned to accept the crown. However, he soon found himself with new struggles, and was deposed as King by Ixis Naugus.

* BadassBoast: "I'm your King. Naugus is just keeping my crown warm."
* CharacterDevelopment: Under Ian's pen, his reign started out a bit rough and he nearly had a HeroicBSOD after they buried Sir Connery. After a brief WhatTheHellHero from Sonic, he makes a RousingSpeech that they will perserve and live up to Sir Connery's example. While he has a moment of hesitation during the Prower family's protests and attempt to dethrone him, he stands his ground against Amaedus when he arrives in Castle Acorn. Later on when Naugus tried to claim his throne, he stands his ground until he's forced to step down per the people's demands but instead of fleeing to let someone else deal with New Mobotropolis and Naugus like he would have before, he seeks out Harvey Who to fight back from the shadows.
* CoolSword: The Sword of Light that he inherited from Sir Connery after his passing to replace the Sword of Acorns as the Acorn family sword. Sonic even borrows it to fight Naugus before the Death Egg descends upon New Mobotropolis.
* Dark Furred Redhead
* DualWielding: Wields a pair of exotic-looking... daggers?
* HappilyMarried: With Megan, who he met in Feral Forest after running away from home. He adopted her daughter as his own.
* HeirClubForMen: He and Sally have been drawn into this by their father on several occasions, and his step-daughter Alexis is ineligible to succeed him.
** SuccessionCrisis
* IJustWantToBeNormal: He originally just wanted a life of adventure, and then to live quietly with his new family. Elias constantly doubts his ability to rule, and Ixis Naugus wastes no time attempting to appeal to Elias's desire to "return to the simple life" when making his bid for the throne.
* KingIncognito: During his brief time as a runaway before returning to claim the throne to stop Patch from assuming the throne, then again after Naugus deposed him and while he was part of the Secret Freedom Fighters.
* LongLostRelative: Sally somehow never knew he existed and he grew up on Angel Island during the Great War and Robotnik Prime's reign.
* ModestRoyalty: He dresses rather simply and prefers functional attire regardless of if he's King or not.
* Prince On a White Pasha.
* PuppetKing: When he took over Knothole while Max was out of commission, Elias, inexperienced and desperate for help, agreed to be this to Geoffrey St. John, who manipulated him into doing such things as stripping Sonic of his knighthood and placing him under house arrest in Knothole Village. St. John's half-assed advice eventually leads to Elias cracking and abandoning the throne for over a year.
* PutOnABus: He ran away from his responsibilities (and the book) for several issues. He was later phased out of the book entirely due to legal matters.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He tries to be this when he's looking after Knothole while Max is out of commission, but Geoffery St. John manipulates him to the point that Elias abandoned Knothole. When he returns to assume the throne, he has Sally's marriage to Patch annulled and is happy to heed the advice of the Freedom Fighters.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Under Ian's pen, he joins the fight against Mammoth Mogul during the Darkest Storm arc and defends himself against Amaedus Prower during the House of Cards two parter. Once he's ousted from the throne by Naugus' manipulations, he joins the Secret Freedom Fighters to take it back.
* SpannerInTheWorks: In issue 156. Anti-Antoine/Patch's plan to kill King Max and take over the Kingdom of Acorn would have gone off without a hitch... had Elias not decided to help Sonic out by reclaiming his birthright.
* SuperiorSuccessor: To King Max. While Max meant well, he was still a slave to tradition and HorribleJudgeOfCharacter who's decisions and refusal to heed the warnings of others led to the Great War, the destruction of Old Mobotropolis and Knothole Village, and subjected all of Mobius to Robotnik's tyranny for over a decade. Elias, by contrast, is a WisePrince and ReasonableAuthorityFigure who heeds the advice of others and reforms the kingdom into a Republic for the sake of the people. Harvey Who even agrees to help him reclaim the throne from Naugus for this very reason, remarking that Elias is far more worthy to be king than Max ever was.
* WarriorPrince
* WellDoneSonGuy: Like Sally, he struggled to earn his father's approval. This clashes with his duty as King, and deciding to reform the kingdom into a Republic only made their relationship more difficult.
* TheWisePrince: Something Harvey Who notices. When Elias approaches him for help in reclaiming his throne from Ixis Naugus, Harvey, based on his past experiences with King Max repeatedly ignoring his advice and council, initially refused to help him. Eventually, however, Harvey is persuaded to help, acknowledging Elias to be a far better, wiser, and more worthy king than his father ever was.

Maximillian's wife, who was shot down in transit during the Great War and left in stasis for a number of years by the Brotherhood. After recovering, she stepped back into the role of Queen and mother to both her children.

* ArrangedMarriage
* Dark Furred Redhead
* GoodOldWays: Rather old fashioned, but somewhat averts it by knowing the ways of the past don't quite apply to today. This is in sharp contrast to her husband.
* HappilyMarried: Despite Max's behavior and fall into senility, Alicia continues to remain by his side.
* Mobian Popsicle
* ProperLady
* PutOnABus: Gone after the Penders lawsuit.
* SatelliteCharacter: She existed to be Max's wife and the mother of Sally & Elias and has no real character of her own.

* DemotedToExtra: Dylan, Hamlin, and Penelope's reasons for joining the council, as they didn't get much chance to make a difference when in the shadow of the other Freedom Fighters.
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** While they reek of ObstructiveBureaucrat tendencies, with a little bit of petty personal grudges on the part of some such as Hamlin, they make the hindering argument that, despite being the ones to elect them in charge in the first place to keep order, the Freedom Fighters routinely ignore or defy them whenever they don't make the decisions they want, essentially committing treason. Naugus uses this to his advantage when trying to seize the Kingdom, questioning whether Sonic's actions respect the people he vows to protect. Combined with the Freedom Fighters' recent number of casualties and bad decisions against the Iron Dominion damaging the public's trust in them, Rotor can only shrug very nervously at Sonic, unable to offer a good counter argument.
** While the Freedom Fighters are annoyed and outraged when the Council refuse to let them take Freedom HQ back from Scourge and the Suppression Squad in favor of focusing on the continuing assault on Eggman, they make the point that Scourge isn't much of a threat and, even if he conquered Moebius, couldn't possibly make any gains on Mobius as quickly. Their reasoning is vindicated when Scourge is attacked by Metal Sonic, along with a Metal Scourge that Eggman literally put together and sent after him at the last minute, and nearly defeated.
* NotSoDifferent: During the Great War, King Max allowed Julian Kintobor, an Overlander (technically an enemy but he himself hadn't done anything to them yet), to assume the position of warlord to help defeat the Overlanders despite the warnings of his adviser, Harvey Who. This caused the first Robotnik War. The council was formed to prevent the royal family from making such mistakes again. Most of the council allowed Ixis Naugus, a known enemy, to assume the position of king to help resolve the Nicole "problem," with warnings from Sonic falling on deaf ears. The Source of All from Max's entry above and Naugus' magic intensifying the council's grudges provide a shared magic sway on both parties. Additionally, Max's reluctant exile of Nate Morgan following a crisis situation is a parallel to the council's reluctant decision to exile Nicole after the barrage of enemy attacks that ensured Naugus' rise to power.
** And just to drive the point home, Naugus planned to use a magic spell to enslave the people to his will to facilitate his plans of world domination, much like Robotnik roboticizing people for the same goal. And in both cases Geoffrey was aware of these threats, but was convinced by Naugus to keep quiet because the ruling authority wouldn't believe him.
** A more humorous example: [[spoiler:with Naugus missing, he was working on his spell/fighting the SFF, Hamlin suggested they proceed with ratifying the new constitution without him. Dylan pointed out that this was a violation of protocol, something that Sonic tended to do, aggravating Hamlin to ask to put it to vote to shut him up.]]
* NotSoOmniscientCouncilOfBickering: The Council is often divided between those who generally support Sonic and co. (Uncle Chuck and Rotor), the more obstinate members who distrust them or the monarchy for various reasons (Hamlin, Rosemary), and those that sit somewhere in the middle (Dylan, Penelope).
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: While they mean well, more often than not they prevent the Freedom Fighters from actually saving the day, such as initially refusing to let them stop Scourge and the Suppression Squad from invading Mobius in favor on focusing their efforts on Eggman, trying Sally for treason when she and the others do so anyway, letting Ixis Naugus become king while dismissing Sonic's warnings and annoyance, and voting to exile Nicole from New Mobotropolis because it was "what the people wanted"; it eventually got to the point where Rotor got sick of it and left in outrage.
* PutOnABus: The council was quietly removed from the book. Mobotropolis is back to a monarchy it seems.
* Reasonable Authority Figures: When they're not disagreeing or being obstructive anyway.

A pig who trained under Sally and would later go on to be one of the more important of the Substitute Freedom Fighters. Of all of them, Hamlin was slow to trust and quick to anger and that anger gradually grew as the Substitute Freedom Fighters were continually pulled from action. With the formation of the Council of Acorn, Hamlin joined in part because of his frustration with Sally's leadership.
* BeTheBall: When Larry Lynx organizes them in a counter-attack against Robotnik's forces, this was one of the team's maneuvers. Hamlin would curl into a ball and his teammates would launch him like a projectile into their enemies, his girth taking them down with ease.
* Hypocrite: He constantly gets on Sonic and the Freedom Fighters for violating protocol and disrespecting their authority, but when Naugus is late to a meetingDue to being in the middle of a spell to brainwash the council/fighting the Secret Freedom Fighters, Hamlin gets impatient and suggests they just get on with ratifying the new constitution without him, itself a violation of protocol because policy required a majority of the council and the king. Dylan even lampshades it, remarking that Hamlin always complains when Sonic or anyone else violates protocol but seems to have no problem doing it himself.
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** PlayedWith. On the one hand, pettiness aside, Hamlin makes a number of good points about how subverting the rulings of the council shows Sally and the others to be above the law and hurts the democracy of the country. On the other hand, Hamlin's alternatives are often short-sighted and detrimental.
** Played straight when the Council is barred from getting into the meeting room due to a broken lock. When Uncle Chuck bitterly remarks that Nicole could have easily fixed it for them, Hamlin is quick to retort that Chuck voted to exile Nicole from New Mobotropolis just like the rest of the council.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: During his tenure on the Council, this was Hamlin's main characterization, utterly focused on motions, committees, subcommittees, and any other bureaucratic obstacle that could possibly hinder the Freedom Fighters or ensure they were protecting the kingdom "properly." During the Bold New Moebius arc, when Sally made the decision to counter-invade Moebius after the Council refused to let them chase Scourge out of Freedom HQ, Hamlin wasted no time charging her with treason and did everything in his power to ensure her conviction, being the only councilor not to ultimately vote to clear her of charges, and later, when Naugus makes claim to the throne, he outright explodes on Sonic for insisting on just beating up the wizard rather than letting the government handle it, sick of him disrespecting their authority. The one time he didn't butt heads with Sonic and co. is when they requested permission to start Team Freedom and Team Fighters, and that was because for once they were actually cooperating with the council and going through the "proper channels".
* PigMan: An anthropomorphized pig, but he fits the trope well enough.
* TheResenter: A key point of his character.
** Even before joining the Council of Acorn Hamlin always had a resentful streak. When he debuted with Geoffrey St. John, Hamlin was incredibly suspicious of him, even when St. John saved his life. Though St. John was being shifty, the anger was in part because of how much better Geoffrey outperformed him and the other cadets.
** This attitude drives him when he joins the Council of Acorn, where Hamlin becomes an ObstructiveBureaucrat who actively uses his position to make it hard for the Freedom Fighters to act. When Sally calls him out on this, Hamlin retorts that since he was only ever used as part of the backup unit and never got to fight for his people, then he's going to ensure the Freedom Fighters fight for them properly.
* SomebodyDoesntLoveRaymond: Placed among numerous attempts by Flynn to rectify Sally's character, Hamlin's newfound resentment was likely an attempt at this trope. Though it doesn't go that far story-wise, Sally is visibly very upset by this revelation and the measures Hamlin took to spite her.

A porcupine who trained under Sally as part of the Substitute Freedom Fighters. Dylan would often see combat in the events that the major Freedom Fighters were taken out of commission. When the council reformed he took a seat on it dissatisfied with the meager role he had in his previous position.

* ArtEvolution: Like many of the minor characters his design was tweaked over the years. He was given a more anthropomorphized look to put him in line with the typical Sonic character aesthetic; he even received a more defined head and neck.
* BigDamnHeroes: One of his most notable actions in the comic came when an amnesiac Sonic was tricked into attacking the other Freedom Fighters. When he beats his way through the major members, Antoine organizes a counter-attack with the Substitute Freedom Fighters (before they were known as such). Sonic get's through them easily, but it was then that Dylan knocked him out with a cheap shot, saving the day.
* ImprovisedLockpick: He can use his quills for this function.
* PricklyPorcupine: Dylan the Porcupine.
* TheSmartGuy: When was a Freedom Fighter, he'd often play this to the team being the calmer head and rational thinker. Even on the Council, he's one of the least likely to act on petty grudges.

One of the Substitute Freedom Fighters, and later a member of the council.

* ObstructiveBureaucrat: When Naugus attacks, Rotor is quick to demand the nanite suit and tries to rally Hamlin and Dylan to help Sonic fight, but Penelope immediately shuts that down under threats of being charged with dereliction of duty, stating they weren't Freedom Fighters anymore and would deal with this matter politically.

Another of the cadets and later Substitute Freedom Fighters. Arlo is an Armadillo and an overall easygoing member of the reserve team. Unlike the others, Arlo ultimately did not go onto the Council of Acorn, retiring as a Freedom Fighter.
* TheChewToy: Arlo is injury prone. His first outing with the cadets even leaving him out of action with a wound he sustains from a turret, then an amnesiac Sonic beats him up, then he's injured by collapsing debris. Unlike say, Snively, Arlo's injuries aren't played for a joke and the final one forced him to retire.
* DemotedToExtra: All of the Substitute Freedom Fighters grappled with this trope, but Arlo had it the worst. The cadets went on to other roles after the Substitute Freedom Fighters disbanded. Arlo simply went into retirement, the only cadet to do so.
* GamebreakingInjury: During their attempt to retake Robotropolis after Robotnik's death, a ceiling falls on Arlo. His injuries were severe enough for him to leave active duty.

A teenaged mongoose who was rescued by Sonic and developed a crush on him. Mina, like Sonic, has SuperSpeed, but did not feel she was capable of serving as a Freedom Fighter. She discovered she had a talent for singing and went on to become a pop idol. Although it took quite a long time, she eventually got over her crush.

* TheAtoner: Mina, hoping to spread awareness regarding possible problems with Nicole being compromised again after the Iron Dominion incident, uses her status as an IdolSinger to her advantage to start spreading such messages with her music. It's only after her first song that she discovers that Nicole had broken free from the Iron Queen's control and was working undercover to protect as many people as she could, but by that point, the damage is done; the public, thanks to Naugus' HatePlague, takes her message much differently than she intended, and eventually end up so consumed with fear towards Nicole that it leads to her being banished from New Mobotropolis. Mina is horrified by the result and spends several issues after Nicole's exile trying to make up for it and get her back into the city.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: She used her status as a public icon to get the people to stand up and do things for themselves rather than always relying on the Freedom Fighters, as well as raise awareness concerning possible problems with Nicole after the Iron Dominion's occupation of New Mobotropolis. Naugus used this to spread a HatePlague to turn himself and Nicole into a VillainWithGoodPublicity and HeroWithBadPublicity respectively and eventually get NICOLE exiled from the city completely. When Mina goes to Freedom HQ to make amends with Nicole, she's told that she got what she wanted.
* BreakoutCharacter: Her character design has become very popular among Sonic fans, that some of her supporters wish for her to appear in the next future Sonic the Hedgehog video games. But, still no word from the Sega Corporation.
* CharacterDevelopment: Mina started out as a lonely girl, uncertain of herself, who kept pining for Sonic and tried unsuccessfully to be a Freedom Fighter. Eventually, she grew past her crush and realized her true calling was music.
* GenkiGirl
* HalfDressedCartoonAnimal: Averted. Mina has always been fully clothed, often with a tank top, shorts, gloves, and boots.
* HappilyMarried: To Tails, of all people, in the "X Years Later" comics. It's actually pretty cute, even if we never get an explanation as to how they got together or what happened to Ash.
* IdolSinger
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Backed off once she realized Sonic's feelings for Sally.
* JerkassHasAPoint: While Mina using her songs to raise awareness concerning possible problems with Nicole after the Iron Dominion's occupation was viewed by the Freedom Fighters as InnocentlyInsensitive at best and overzealous and callous at worst, it doesn't change the fact that her intent and the points she raised were far from invalid. In the confrontation immediately proceeding her first concert, Sally tries to lecture her on responsibility after her songs end up rallying the public against Nicole, only for Mina to turn it around and furiously chew her, and by extension the rest of the Freedom Fighters, out on their MoralMyopia; from Mina's viewpoint, nobody in the Freedom Fighters has any room to lecture her on being responsible considering the fact that even after Nicole, Bunnie, and Monkey Khan were BrainwashedAndCrazy by the Iron Queen, they continue to keep Nicole in power at New Mobotropolis and don't even bother coming up with any failsafes to prevent her from being compromised again. In the very next issue, Sally herself admits that she can see where Mina is coming from and wishes she handled the previous confrontation better.
* LovingAShadow: Towards Sonic, who saw her only as a good friend.
* MisaimedFandom: InUniverse; Mina uses a concert to rally the people of Mobotropolis to start standing up for themselves and stop taking everything the Freedom Fighters say on faith alone.Specifically, her main concern was to ensure that NICOLE couldn't wind up BrainwashedAndCrazy again. Thanks to Ixis Naugus' manipulations, instead of the debates and civilian empowerment she was hoping for, the result is a divided and even more fearful kingdom and NICOLE eventually being evicted from the city.
-->Mina: This isn't what my music was supposed to create...
* MustMakeAmends: Mina uses a concert to rally the people of New Mobotropolis to start standing up for themselves and stop taking everything the Freedom Fighters say on faith alone, as well as spread awareness regarding possible problems with Nicole being BrainwashedAndCrazy again after the Iron Dominion incident. Thanks to Naugus' HatePlague, the people are instead consumed with fear and paranoia regarding Nicole, eventually leading to her being exiled from New Mobotropolis altogether. Mina is horrified by what her actions have wrought, especially after discovering from Sonic and Sally that Nicole was pretending to be brainwashed during the Iron Dominion's occupation in order to protect people, and spends the next few issues trying to make up for it by rallying support for Nicole's return to the city.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After she learns what Nicole was really going through during the Iron Dominion arc, and when seeing people taking her message differently than she intended.
* OfficialCouple: With Ash in the main storyline, with Tails in the "X Years Later" arcs.
* OneSideOfTheStory: Hoping to spread awareness regarding possible problems with NICOLE being compromised again after the Iron Dominion incident, Mina uses her status as an IdolSinger to her advantage to start spreading such messages with her music. It's only after her first song that she discovers from Sonic and Sally that NICOLE had actually broken free from the Iron Queen's control, but was working undercover to protect as many people as she could, which Mina was not aware of beforehand.
* PimpedOutDress: Has a red, Chinese style dress she wears from time to time.
* SoapBoxSadie: After the Iron Dominion, Mina decided to use her music to try and make people be more active and productive.
* PutOnABus: Gone after the Penders lawsuit; actually a Karl Bollers creation.
* RantInducingSlight: When Sonic and Sally confront her over using her songs to raise tensions with Nicole and the citizens, Mina remains calm during the confrontation until Sally brings up responsibility, upon which she snaps and rants that Sally and the rest of the Freedom Fighters are the ones being irresponsible, since even after Nicole was hijacked by the Iron Queen during the Iron Dominion's occupation, they continue to keep her in power at New Mobotropolis and don't even bother coming up with any failsafes to prevent her from being compromised again.
-->Mina: Responsibility?! What about you and the Freedom Fighters? Bunnie, Khan, and Nicole all got turned on you! And Nicole runs the city--is the city! How is that "responsible"?! While you were half a world away, we were running for our lives! Anywhere we hid could be turned into a prison by Nicole! While you talked politics over there, I saw people Legionized here! So don't you dare talk to me about responsibility!
* SuperSpeed
* UnwittingPawn: Mina's attempt to spread her message about standing up and getting the people to do things for themselves instead of relying on the Freedom Fighters was used by Ixis Naugus to spread fear all over New Mobotropolis, take over the throne, and banish Nicole from the city.
** Before that, she was one to Mogul, who activated her super speed in order to use her for his plans at a later date.

Mina Mongoose's manager/boyfriend. He's not exactly Sonic's biggest fan. He's tried to put his jealousy behind him, but that doesn't seem likely to change anytime soon.

* Clingy Jealous Guy: Didn't much care for Sonic at first, thinking he'd end up taking Mina away from him.
* CoolShades
* GreenEyedMonster: At first.
* HalfDressedCartoonAnimal: DependingOnTheArtist; though he's mostly drawn fully clothed, he sometimes goes around without pants, like Antoine.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold
* OfficialCouple: With Mina.
* PerkyGoth: Well, comparatively.
* PutOnABus: Gone after the Penders lawsuit; actually a Karl Bollers creation.
* UnderstandingBoyfriend: He tries to be, and has gotten a bit better at it.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: In the "X Years Later" arcs, Mina has inexplicably married Tails. We never find out what happened to Ash after this.

Knothole, and later New Mobotropolis's chief physician. Dr. Quack was used by the original Robotnik and Snively by threatening his family, forcing him to cooperate with their plan to kill Princess Sally. Fortunately for everyone, he used his medical prestige to deceive them. Dr. Quack has since lost his eye in the war with Eggman, and retired from field duty.

* CombatMedic
* DrJerk: A lighter, softer, more curmudgeonly example.
* EyepatchOfPower: He seemingly lost his eye in an incident with a landmine. When Sonic sees him again, Dr. Quack has an eyepatch.
* IHaveYourWife: Was forced into cooperating with Robotnik during the events of Endgame when his family was held hostage.
* PunnyName
* PutOnABus: The Penders Lawsuit prevents him from ever returning.
* ShoutOut: His children's names are a shout out to Huey, Dewey, and Louie.
** When drawn by Jon Gray, the head of his cane would always mirror his own expression, just like Wade Duck on WesternAnimation/GarfieldAndFriends.

Sonic's parents, once fighters in the Great War. Jules was the first victim of Charles' sabotaged roboticizer, which was meant to save his life but turned him into a slave of Robotnik. Bernie was also later roboticized. Both remained under Robotnik's control until his death in issue #50. Bernie was later returned to flesh along with the other roboticized citizens, but Jules remains a robot due to the fact that if he were restored, his old injuries would kill him. Both parents love and are proud of their son, but deeply regret not being able to be there for him when he was growing up.

Sadly they were creations of Ken Penders and have now been retconed out due to legal issues.

* BestFriendsInLaw: Bernie and Charles were always very friendly. After Charles's attempt to roboticize Jules robs him of his free will, Bernie never blamed him for it. She felt that his state was preferable to death as they could bring him around someday.
* DadTheVeteran: Jules fought on the front lines of the Great War, and is perfectly willing and able to fight if necessary, especially when Sonic is in danger. Best displayed in issue 192; when Scourge breaks into their house in the middle of the night to attack Sonic, Jules stands up to him, refuses to be cowed by his threats, and ends up scaring him into a complete retreat.
-->Jules: I am not your father. I was on the front lines of the Great War. I won't go quietly. And while you may not care about the loss of your Jules, I'm certain my son will be very upset. Do you want that on your head too?
* DependingOnTheArtist: While Jules has always been blue, Bernie's fur color fluctuates from blue to purple.
* HappilyMarried: A wartime couple that withstood a coup; a separation from their child; a fatal injury to the husband, who was robotized and then forced to subject his wife to the same horrific experience; a decades-later derobotization for only half of the couple as Jules retained a robotic existence as his wife became organic again... and yet they persist as a couple no less in love than they ever were. They don't get much attention, but they're likely the standout example in the series for this trope.
* LastOfHisKind: Jules, who is the titular subject of "The Last Robian."
* MamaBear and PapaWolf: Getting between them and their son would be a bad idea. They've stood up to some of the most formidable foes in the series when necessary.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: As said in Uncle Chuck's entry, he and his brother brought Julian Kintobor to King Max and harassed a young Regina.
* PutOnABus: Unfortunately phased out of the comic due to legal issues. Even if Penders hadn't created them, being the parents of Sonic (a Sega character) might still have gotten them booted from the reboot continuity.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: He gave one to Scourge, dismissing him as the spiteful jealous coward he was.
* RetiredBadass: Both of them were agents during the Great War. Now you know where Sonic gets it from.
* UnwillingRoboticisation: This really is a trend with Sonic's family, isn't it?

Tails' father and mother.

* BarefootCartoonAnimal: Rosemary.
* CoolSword: Amadeus.
* ColonelBadass: Amadeus was a veteran of the Great War and the commander of the Royal Army.
* Dark Furred Redhead: Rosemary
* DependingOnTheArtist: Rosemary has gone from looking like an older, feminine version of Tails, to her current, more distinctive red-haired appearance. Now people say she looks too much like Sally...
* ExactWords: Uncle Chuck is annoyed when Rosemary legitimately considers letting Naugus become King. He calls her on this, having assumed that she and Amadeus had settled things with Elias and were fine with him on the throne, to which Rosemary clarified that all they agreed on for the constitution was that it called for a king in the Council of Acorn, not who the king should be.
* EyeScream: A flashback shows how he got his eye patch. He, Jules, Bernie, Charles, and a team of Mobians ambushed an Overlander garrison. In the fight the Garrison's commander, Colin Kintober, shot him in the eye.
* EyepatchOfPower: Amadeus
* FatalFlaw: Rosemary's distrust for the monarchy. Even after their revolution succeeds, Rosemary continues to look down on the Acorns, leading her to repeatedly vote against the Freedom Fighters. It's to the extent that, despite Ixis Naugus being a known enemy and an EvilSorcerer who's tried to kill her son more than once in the past, Rosemary is perfectly willing to put him in charge and make him king because she just distrusts the Acorn family that much.
* HappilyMarried
* JerkassHasAPoint: Yes, they led a revolution and tried to overthrow the Kingdom of Acorn, but their criticisms of the Acorns' leadership are perfectly valid; while King Max meant well, he was still a slave to tradition and HorribleJudgeOfCharacter who's decisions and refusal to heed the warnings of others led to the Great War, the destruction of Old Mobotropolis and Knothole Village, and subjected all of Mobius to Robotnik's tyranny for over a decade. Harvey Who makes those very same points when Elias approaches him for help in reclaiming the throne from Naugus, openly stating Amadeus and Rosemary were right and the Acorns don't deserve to rule; he only agrees to help after confirming that Elias is IAmNotMyFather nothing like Max.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: Rosemary was among those in the Council voting against the Freedom Fighters taking on the Suppression Squad in favor of focusing on Eggman. On top of that, she's in favor of putting Naugus in charge, remarking that the constitution merely called for a king without specifying who it should be, and ends up voting for Nicole to be exiled. She shows a more positive side to this by stepping in whenever Naugus tries to dismiss or deny motions out of hand, reminding him that even if he is King, his power isn't absolute and he's just one voice on a council.
* ParentalAbandonment: Both Rosemary and Amadeus were separated from their son, but have since been reunited with Tails.
* PutOnABus: Gone after the Penders lawsuit; actually Micheal Gallagher creations. Regardless of who created them, being the parents of Tails (a Sega character) might still have gotten them booted from the reboot continuity.
* TheRevolutionWillNotBeCivilized: Upon the formation of New Mobotropolis, they launch a civil war with the intent on overthrowing the Acorns and instigating a democracy. This leads to a brief duel between Amadeus and Elias over the matter, the former demanded he step down and Elias refusing to do so. Sally is forced to intervene and calls the Prowers out on it, pointing out that while the people may want change, they did not call for a bloody coup.
* UnwillingRoboticisation: Amadeus and Rosemary were the first to be cured of it, in fact.
* VelvetRevolution: The Prowers try to lead a revolution in order to transform the Kingdom of Acorn into a democracy, but Elias proves to be reasonable and the two end up working out a compromise that makes everyone happy.

Introduced as a Robian who ruled the domain of Rob o' the Hedge, General D'Coolette was eventually captured, deroboticized and rehabilitated. Many of the later stories involving him revolved around his son, Antoine, trying to impress him, feeling he didn't measure up to his father. Sadly, the General died in issue 168, but not before making clear how proud he was of his son, and giving approval of his son's relationship with Bunnie.

* BrainwashedAndCrazy: As a Robian, in his "High Sheriff" personae.
* ADeathInTheLimelight: The General's biggest role is his final one where he speaks with Antoine and Bunnie as he lays dying in the hospital.
* Expy: For the Sheriff of Nottingham when he was roboticized and known as the "High Sheriff."
* FourStarBadass
* KilledOffForReal: Fatally poisoned by Antoine's Moebius doppelganger.
* NiceGuy: After breaking his brainwashing, Armand was actually a fairly affable and fun person to be around. After his arch enemy, Rob is stalking him, seeing if he was still evil; Armand decides to invite Rob to spend time with him and the other Freedom Fighters.
* ProperlyParanoid: Charles and Jules rescued a younger Robotnik and brought him to the kingdom thinking he'd need help while King Acorn agreed to it out of guilt for turning Nate away. Of them it was Armand who was wholly opposed to the idea submitting only becuase the king ordered it.

A group a heroic trainee animals chosen by Sally to help her when the original Freedom Fighters were capacitated. Although well trained, they ended up mostly as the Freedom Fighter's support network during their early days.

Mina's mother, roboticized by Dr. Eggman and later de-roboticized by the Bem. She later joined the Council of Acorn after Rotor's resignation.

* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: When Naugus objects to her motion to overturn Nicole's exile, insisting that he protects the city, Isabella shoots that down, pointing out that the latest attack by the Death Egg proved he was incapable of doing so and Rotor's Team Freedom have done more to protect New Mobotropolis than he ever did.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: In contrast to her ObstructiveBureaucrat colleagues. Her first motion is to vote to overturn Nicole's exile, pointing out that doing so has done nothing but left them more vulnerable to outside attack and Nicole could give them advanced warning should Eggman attack again.

* Dark Furred Redhead
* WarriorPrince

* DemotedToExtra: Dylan, Hamlin, and Penelope's reasons for joining the council, as they didn't get much chance to make a difference when in the shadow of the other Freedom Fighters.
* JerkassHasAPoint:

* JerkassHasAPoint:

* PricklyPorcupine: Dylan the Porcupine.

* GenkiGirl
* IdolSinger
* SuperSpeed

* PutOnABus: Gone after the Penders lawsuit; actually a Karl Bollers creation.
* UnderstandingBoyfriend: He tries to be, and has gotten a bit better at it.

* CombatMedic
* PunnyName

* BarefootCartoonAnimal: Rosemary.
* CoolSword: Amadeus.
* ColonelBadass: Amadeus was a veteran of the Great War and the commander of the Royal Army.
* Dark Furred Redhead: Rosemary
* EyepatchOfPower: Amadeus
* HappilyMarried

* FourStarBadass

This only got worse attitude drives him when he joined joins the Council.

Council of Acorn, where Hamlin becomes an ObstructiveBureaucrat who actively uses his position to make it hard for the Freedom Fighters to act. When Sally actually called calls him out on it at one point, but he just gave an excuse this, Hamlin retorts that since he was making sure they were protecting only ever used as part of the kingdom properly despite backup unit and never got to fight for his people, then he's going to ensure the fact a lot of Sonic and Sally's decisions on almost always on-the-spot ones and whatever he and the council try to decide on usually put the kingdom in more danger without Freedom Fighters fight for them realizing it.properly.

* ObstructiveBureaucrat: During his tenure on the Council Council, this was Hamlin's main characterization. He received far fewer sympathetic moments characterization, utterly focused on motions, committees, subcommittees, and any other bureaucratic obstacle that could possibly hinder the Freedom Fighters or ensure they were protecting the kingdom "properly." During the Bold New Moebius arc, when Sally made the decision to counter-invade Moebius after the Council refused to let them chase Scourge out of Freedom HQ, Hamlin wasted no time charging her with treason and did everything in his power to ensure her conviction, being the only councilor not to ultimately vote to clear her of charges, and later, when Naugus makes claim to the throne, he outright explodes on Sonic for insisting on just beating up the wizard rather than Dylan, Penelope, letting the government handle it, sick of him disrespecting their authority. The one time he didn't butt heads with Sonic and co. is when they requested permission to start Team Freedom and Team Fighters, and that was because for once they were actually cooperating with the others.council and going through the "proper channels".
