!The Morning Show 9

[[folder:Peter Maldonado]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Tyler Alvarez

Co-anchor of Hanover High's Morning Show, and the writer and director of true-crime documentary ''American Vandal''.
----

* AmateurSleuth: His reasoning and detective work allows Dylan to be proved innocent, and later [[spoiler: Kevin innocent of being The Turd Burglar, if not of causing the Brownout.]]
* AttentionWhore: The opinion of [[spoiler:Mackenzie]], as well as several others, who claim that he is only using the documentary as a way to gain notoriety in the school.
** On the other hand, all these people, ''especially'' [[spoiler: Mackenzie]] had their sketchy behaviour revealed by the documentary, and Sara's slut-shaming was probably the only case where the consequences were undeserved.
* BigOlEyebrows: Sports a pretty thick pair.
* CharacterDevelopment: Initially, he's pretty much only concerned with finding the truth and has no qualms about exposing a person's deepest secrets to further his case, but his experience documenting the case slowly changes him, and he ultimately becomes more empathetic by the end.
** This is especially true with Sara Pearson; he leaves her TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to him in the documentary, and admits in his voiceover that she was right to give it to him. It's his way of owning his callous behaviour.
* TheComicallySerious: Much of the show's humor comes from how seriously he takes his investigation into who spray-painted a bunch of dicks.
* CoolLoser: He and Sam are the only two people who aren't invited to Christa's party, but he's a good journalist.
* DarkSecret: He apparently [[spoiler: masturbates to American Apparel models.]] Huh.
* {{Determinator}}: He will not stop until he uncovers the truth.
* ForGreatJustice: His stated motivation. Just about everyone, especially Mackenzie and Sara, suspect otherwise.
* GracefulLoser: Although he can be kind of a dick, he leaves Mackenzie and Sara's attacks at him in the documentary, and he genuinely seems like he wouldn't have minded if Sam had been harsher on him.
* HiddenDepths: sort of. Peter and Sam actually show some very good investigative reporting and deductive skills at times during the show, especially in the latter half.
* HollywoodNerd: Short, skinny, bespectacled, good with tech, unpopular. Subverted later on in the series as his documentary series gains him a fair amount of popularity. Then possibly doubly subverted with Mackenzie's ReasonYouSuckSpeech.
* IntrepidReporter: He's determined to uncover the truth of who spray-painted the dicks on the teachers' cars.
* KidDetective: Along with Sam.
* NerdGlasses: Wears these.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Sam. It only takes a hit when Peter suggests Sam might be the dick-drawer and brings his crush with Gabi into it.
* RudeHeroNiceSidekick: The "rude hero" - although a downplayed example, Peter is abrasive, unpopular, and self-absorbed - to Sam's "nice sidekick".
* SeriousBusiness: ''Everything'' is this to him, but especially anything investigation-related.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Played with. Peter is often pretty accurate about what they're dealing with, but he behaves like a real detective or documentarian.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sam Ecklund]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Griffin Gluck

Peter's closest friend and co-producer of ''American Vandal''.
----
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: A one-sided variant with Gabi Granger.
* CoolLoser: Sam wasn't invited to Nana's party, although he's nice to everyone and actually seems like decent friends with some of them.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Peter portrays him as one of these in building a case against him. Sam is not amused.
* DeadpanSnarker: Provides a lot of comic foil to Peter's seriousness.
* DoggedNiceGuy: Towards Gabi as Sam and Peter's viewers notice. While Sam is a genuine NiceGuy, unlike most examples of this trope, he gets called out for thinking he could throw her boyfriend's cheating in her face as a way of saving her, and he genuinely accepts he was wrong.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: Numerous fans of ''American Vandal'' comment on how he and Gabi should get together. Even Mr. Rafferty gets in on it.
* GirlFriday: A RareMaleExample to Peter, although they are co-producers, due to Sam being CloserToEarth.
* HiddenDepths: sort of. Peter and Sam actually show some very good investigative reporting and deductive skills at times during the show, especially in the latter half.
* KidDetective: With Peter.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Peter. It only takes a hit when Peter suggests he might be the dick-drawer and brings his crush with Gabi into it.
* RudeHeroNiceSidekick: The "nice sidekick" to Peter's "rude hero", Sam is genuinely kind to everyone and only [[TheDogBitesBack snaps at Peter]] once he exposes his crush with Gabi and makes him look like a stalker.
* UnluckyChildhoodFriend: He views himself as being this, though it's heavily implied he would've been on much stronger ground if he ''hadn't'' mocked Gabi's boyfriend.
* VictoriousChildhoodFriend: Somewhat. Gabi forgives him for his insensitive comments, but it's made clear from her body language that she still regards him as just a friend. Poor Sam.
* TheWatson: To Peter. He's much more levelheaded and calm, unless Gabi is involved.
* WhatTheHellHero: Gives Peter one of these after Peter exposes his crush on Gabi.
* YourMom: Makes a number of jokes about Peter's mom.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Dylan Maxwell]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Jimmy Tatro

The primary suspect in the case, Dylan has already been expelled for drawing twenty-seven dicks on twenty-seven staff members' cars at the outset of the series. Peter creates ''American Vandal'' in a quest to prove his innocence.
----
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: He maintains he didn't spray-paint the dicks, but he won't deny that it was funny.
* BadLiar: How his mother claims she knows he's innocent. He lies to her all the time, but she can always tell.
* BookDumb: He freely admits he's not book-smart. Or street-smart.
* BreakTheHaughty: Although somewhat less serious than other examples, he's really incredibly dumb, impulsive, and immature. He matures a lot over the course of Season 1, which leaves him a much sadder, more introspective character.
* ButHeSoundsHandsome: Subverted. He most-likely didn't spray-paint the dicks, but the way he keeps saying how funny it was sure makes him look guilty.
* ConsummateLiar: Dylan lies and manipulates all the time, which only makes him look even more guilty.
* ConvictedByPublicOpinion: Dylan gets expelled mostly because everyone assumes he did it.
* ClassClown: But not a particularly funny one.
* DiggingYourselfDeeper: His rudeness to Mrs Shapiro and his insistence that the dick drawing was super funny does this for him.
* DumbassHasAPoint: By his own admission; he argues that he's ''too'' stupid to have possibly deleted footage from the server. Sam and Peter, who work with him, admit that this is actually very good evidence of his innocence.
* DumbassTeenageSon: To his long-suffering parents, especially his stepfather, who just seems to want the best for him, but it doesn't stop Dylan being an asshole to them.
* {{Jerkass}}: Guilty or not, he isn't the most pleasant guy. Especially to Ms. Shapiro.
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Dylan's not a bad person deep down. He's just kinda dumb.
* LoveMartyr: He just keeps going back to Mackenzie, no matter how many times she dumps and manipulates him. [[spoiler:It's implied he would have gone back to her even after finding out that she cheated on him and withheld evidence that could exonerate him, if she hadn't broken it off herself.]]
* ThePrankster: He and the Wayback Boys make terrible prank videos for Website/YouTube.
* SadClown: He's a goofy, laid-back guy, but by the end of the series he's hiding a lot of sadness.
* TheSlacker: Hard work isn't really Dylan's thing.
* TheStoner: Smokes a lot of weed.
* ThenLetMeBeEvil: [[spoiler: He didn't spray-paint the dicks on the faculty's cars, but in the final episode he does spray-paint a dick on Ms. Shapiro's driveway after she refuses to apologize to him. His rationale is that he might as well be what everyone thinks he is.]]
* TooDumbToLive: As ''everyone'' points out. Even Peter can see it.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Christa Carlyle]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Genevieve Hannelius

Student Body President and a member of the Morning Show, as well as numerous other school clubs and teams. Known for her good grades and political activism. Was receiving a CPR certification at the time of the incident, and also on crutches from a broken foot.
----
* TheAce: Smart, athletic, kind, pretty, part of a ton of school clubs, and one of the most popular girls in school. She even [[spoiler:makes the football team, though she quits before the season begins.]]
** Given that she [[spoiler:made the team even with Coach Rafferty's attitude to and resulting treatment of her, she must have put in a fantastic performance.]]
* AmbiguouslyEvil: [[spoiler: May have been responsible for the dicks, with her boyfriend Van Delorey.]]
* BigBadDuumvirate: [[spoiler:If she drew the dicks with Van Deloney, they would be this.]]
* CPRCleanPrettyReliable: Was receiving a CPR certification at the time of the incident. [[spoiler: Except she wasn't. She doesn't even know CPR.]]
** though, as has been pointed out elsewhere, you can have CPR certification and [[spoiler: freeze, panic, or be too unsure in your skill to come forward in an emergency, especially if you're, say, at a party and had too much to drink. Having a certificate in something doesn't mean you have the skill.]]
* {{Expy}}: Shares a lot of traits with [[{{Film/Election}} Tracy Flick]], [[spoiler: including possibly being more sinister than she seems.]]
* GoGetterGirl: Which goes along with being a Tracy Flick variant, as indicated above.
* GranolaGirl: A vegan, and once attempted to force the school to change its mascot from humpback whales, on the grounds that humpbacks are endangered.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Coach Rafferty might consider her a jerk for contributing to the football team's loss (of one game), but Christa is absolutely correct in her main point: religious and gender equality ''is'' more important than high school football.
* LaserGuidedKarma: pre-series. In one of her protests, Christa pours laundry detergent down the stairs to illustrate the corruption in the school system [[note]]which might actually be her last effort at peaceful means of protest, [[spoiler: about her complaint about Rafferty's behaviour towards her being swept under the rug]][[/note]]. She slips on the detergent herself, and breaks her foot. She's on crutches during the 'incident', and during her early interviews for the show.
* LovableAlphaBitch: One of the most popular girls in school, but not unpleasant at all.
* NiceGirl: Generally kind to all and liked by all in return. [[spoiler: Even if she was responsible for the dicks, she still led the campaign to have Dylan exonerated, rather than let him take the rap for her actions.]]
* StudentCouncilPresident: Part of the reason that the case against her is quickly discounted.
* SoapboxSadie: Constantly interrupts school to make political statements. When ''American Vandal'' goes viral, she leads the campaign to have Dylan returned to school.
* TheStrategist: She's a member of the Strategy Club, though no one has any idea what that is.
** Also: her boyfriend Van Delorey is with her at Nana's party, but doesn't appear in any prom photos (the only one of Christa is in a limo with several friends) or the after-party. [[spoiler: Van might not be at the prom because he's not a Hanover student, and he ''might'' just have a commitment elsewhere during the party. But it's more likely that Christa decided not to take Van to anymore school events, in case someone noticed how easy it was to mistake him for Dylan from behind.]]
* StrawFeminist: Deconstructed. Everyone is annoyed at her SoapboxSadie ways, and her attempt to get on the football team is played as this. But it gets a whole darker and more sympathetic look once [[spoiler:we find out that Rafferty bullied, humiliated, and ''physically injured'' her just to punish her]], even though she is also a very good sportswoman.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: [[spoiler: If she was responsible for the dicks, then she's definitely this.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Madison Kaplan]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Aylan Bayramoglu

Co-anchor on the Morning Show. Was shopping with her mom at the time of the incident.
----
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Peter admits she's much better at the anchor job than he is.
* [[TheGenericGuy The Generic Girl]]: Described by Mr. Kraz as "super, super boring."
* MaleGaze: Dylan earns her ire by zooming in on her boobs whenever he's filming her for the Morning Show.
* PutOnABus: Or, rather, most of the other protagonists go on the bus to the other school, and she doesn't.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ming Zhang]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Cody Wai-Ho Lee

The only member of the Morning Show to have no alibi for the day of the incident.
----
* OneHundredPercentAdorationRating: Everyone loves Ming. The only person who ever seriously questions his innocence is Dylan, and it's on purely racist grounds.
* AsianAndNerdy: Textbook case, though he's actually extremely popular.
* BeneathSuspicion: The case against him is easily dismissed with "Dude, it's Ming." He's just too lovable to be the culprit.
* CanadaEh: Despite Dylan believing him to be Chinese, he's actually from Toronto. Explains why he's so nice.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: InUniverse. Comments on ''American Vandal'' have a lot of love for Ming after his short appearance in Episode Four.
* ForeignExchangeStudent: From Canada.
* [[HardDrinkingPartyGirl Hard-Drinking Party Guy]]: He goes absolutely nuts at both Nana's party and the post-graduation party.
* InscrutableOriental: Dylan tries to bring this up to cast suspicion on him. Not only is it racist, it's not even accurate, as Ming's from Canada.
* NiceGuy: His defining characteristic.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Randall Snyder and Phil Huang]]
->'''Randall portrayed by:''' Tucker Albrizzi
Two members of the Morning Show who are ruled out as suspects due to both being hospitalized at the time. Randall is also credited with "Additional Photography" for ''American Vandal''.
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: Sam notes how unusual it is for them both to have been hospitalized with Mono, aka "the kissing disease" as the same time.
* BitCharacter: Neither of them receive much characterization.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Randall never speaks a line, but it's revealed in Episode Four that he has been the cameraman whenever Peter and Sam are both on screen.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Emily Hershey]]
A member of the Morning Show who is quickly ruled out as a suspect, as she was in Pheonix at the time of the incident.
----
* BitCharacter: The only one of the Morning Show 9 to receive no characterization at all.
[[/folder]]

!Other Hanover High School Students

[[folder:Gabi Granger]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Creator/CamilleHyde

A childhood friend of Sam Ecklund's, she gets credit as a co-producer on ''American Vandal'' because she knows a lot of the seniors, and is credited as 'Transpo Captain' because she has a car.
----
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: [[spoiler: With Sam, at the end.]]
* DudeNotFunny: [[spoiler:She does not appreciate Sam making light of Brandon cheating on her.]]
* NiceGirl: Comes off as an extremely likable person.
* TheDriver: played with. Gabi seems to be driving Pete and Sam everywhere in the investigation except for school, but subverts the trope by being a fully realized character
* TwoferTokenMinority: At times the most prominent female member of the team, while also being black.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: Both in- and out-universe. Sam is not the only person to wonder this about Gabi and Brandon [[spoiler: even before it's revealed he cheated on her with Sara Pearson.]] Many of the viewers did, too.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mackenzie Wagner]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Camille Ramsey

Dylan's on-again, off-again girlfriend, who claims he was at her house at the time of the incident.
----
* AllTakeAndNoGive: Her relationship with Dylan, in a nutshell.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Towards Dylan in general, and more specifically when [[spoiler:it turns out she had a good reason to trash the gym teacher's]].
* AttentionWhore: She craves attention from Dylan, and stages break-ups with him so that he'll do elaborate things to win her back.
* BerserkButton: She's known to go nuts whenever her parents are having problems.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[spoiler: She stood by and let her boyfriend of four years be expelled from school, have his future plans (including college applications) ruined and be left open to felony criminal charges and possible jail time, as well as incurring possibly ruinous debt for his low-income family, rather than admit to cheating on him.]]
* ColdSniper: Her preferred style of gaming.
* DarkActionGirl: Although she did trash the Coach's office, she prefers to demonstrate it via video games.
* DirtyCoward: Revealed to be this in the finale, having had video evidence that would have [[spoiler: exonerated Dylan the entire time,]] only showing this when ''she'' becomes a suspect.
* FemmeFatale: A downplayed and realistic example, but she plays on this trope, being Dylan's girlfriend who he can't resist.
* GamerChick: Has a popular Twitch stream.
* JerkassHasAPoint: [[spoiler:She let Dylan potentially go to prison, but she's got a point when she tells Peter he's acting out of petty jealousy towards people more popular than him.]]
* IdiotBall: Mackenzie has[[spoiler: time-stamped video evidence of Dylan's alibi, but doesn't use it because it reveals that she's cheating on him. It never occurs to her to ''edit the footage'' so it starts when she's walking to the bedroom door? All she needs is twenty seconds of time-stamped footage that clearly identifies her, Dylan, and her bedroom as the location. If she didn't already have the skills to edit the footage (unlikely), she could have just asked the Twitch helpdesk, or looked up instruction videos on Website/YouTube, and where to find free software she could use to do editing. If someone asks her why she's topless from the back? She's already telling Dylan she was changing - just say that she spilled her between-rounds drink on her top, and she intended to change out of view of the camera.]]
* TheLadette: She has elements of this, like her love of gaming and more masculine way of dressing, but this borders on being an InformedAttribute.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: In Episode Seven, she gives a very harsh one of these to Peter after he accuses her of being the vandal with a very convincing and personal theory. While she brings up a good point— that Peter aired everyone’s dirty laundry in public just to make his documentary— it’s mostly said out of spite due to her realizing that [[spoiler: the only way to clear her name would be to send the Twitch Stream that shows her cheating on Dylan before he arrives, proving both of their alibis ''that she’s had the entire time.'']]
* RedHerring: [[spoiler:The biggest one in the series. Episode Seven makes a solid case that she and Dylan worked together to spray-paint the dicks as a way to get back at Mr. Rafferty. But her Twitch stream exonerates her. ''And Dylan.'']]
* YokoOhno: How the Wayback Boys perceive her.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Wayback Boys]]
->'''Spencer portrayed by:''' Eduardo Franco\\
'''Lucas portrayed by:''' Lou Wilson\\
'''Brianna portrayed by:''' Jessica Juarez

Comprised of Spencer Diaz, Lucas Wiley, and Brianna "Ganj" Gagne, the Wayback Boys are Dylan Maxwell's closest friends, so named because they go "way back". They have an unpopular Website/YouTube channel where they make unfunny prank videos.
----
* BookDumb: Like Dylan himself, none of them are very bright.
* CloudCuckooLander: All of them, but especially Spencer.
* TheLadette: Ganj, to the point that it's hard to tell she is a girl.
* NonIndicativeName: The Wayback Boys include a girl.
* ThePrankster: Their M.O. Unfortunately, they're not very good at it.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Ganj is the only girl in the group.
* TheStoner: All of them.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Alex Trimboli]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Calum Worthy

The only witness to the crime, who insists that he saw Dylan spray-painting the dicks.
----
* CharacterTics: He says "One hundred percent" when he is [[spoiler: lying through his teeth.]]
* TheConspiracy: May have been part of one with Ms. Shapiro to [[spoiler:frame Dylan.]]
* ConsummateLiar: He claimed to be best friends with a dead student [[spoiler: (he wasn't)]]. He claimed he drank eleven beers at Nana's party [[spoiler: (he drank one)]]. He claimed Sarah Pearson gave him a handjob [[spoiler: (she didn't)]]. And he claimed he saw Dylan Maxwell spray-painting the dicks on the faculty cars [[spoiler: (he didn't, but this may have been a genuine mistake and later misinterpretation, instead of an outright lie)]].
* GloryHound: It's implied that he may have lied about seeing Dylan so he could take the credit for saving lunch.
* HaveIMentionedIAmSexuallyActiveToday: He totally got a handjob from Sarah Pearson. [[spoiler: He didn't.]]
* KarmaHoudini: Despite Dylan constantly saying that he's going to kick Alex's ass the next time he sees him, [[spoiler: the worst he actually does is shake up Alex's soda and drop his pizza on the ground. It's intentional, to show Dylan's CharacterDevelopment and how he's actively trying to make a better name for himself.]]
* TheStoolPigeon: Tells the school board that he saw Dylan Maxwell spray-painting the dicks.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sara Pearson]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Saxon Sharbino

One of the hottest girls in school. Whether or not she gave Alex Trimboli a handjob somehow becomes crucial to proving Dylan's innocence.
----
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: After being rejected by Van Delorey for Christa, she [[spoiler: consoles herself with Gabi's boyfriend Brandon.]]
* AlphaBitch: Subverted. She comes off this way at first, but proves herself a decent person.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Saves Ming with CPR at the graduation party.]]
* CPRCleanPrettyReliable: Uses an egregious version of this to save [[spoiler:Ming]] at the graduation party. It doesn't even look like she's touching him.
* HeadTurningBeauty : Mr. Kraz describes her as "distracting."
* HiddenDepths: She knows CPR.
* GiveGeeksAChance: How else do you explain her hooking up with Pat Micklewaite?
* ReallyGetsAround: Has hooked up with Scott Winter, Pat Micklewaite, [[spoiler:Brandon Galloway]], and numerous others. [[spoiler: But not Alex Trimboli.]]
* SlutShaming: Implied to have been a victim of this after ''American Vandal'' reveals her hookup list.
* WhatTheHellHero: Gives a well-deserved one to Peter in the final episode.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Brandon Galloway]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Lukas Gage

Captain of the football team, and Gabi's boyfriend.
----
* BastardBoyfriend: Even before we find out [[spoiler:he's cheating on Gabi]], he comes off as this. He forgets how to spell her name at one point, and his idea of a romantic prom proposal is shoving her in a pool.
* JerkJock: Fits to a T.
* RealityEnsues: during the scene at the prom after-party when Sam and Gabi make up, it pans past Brandon [[spoiler: and his date - who isn't Gabi. She dumped his ass for cheating.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Pat Micklewaite]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Jacob Houston

An inexplicably popular student, who Peter views as a rival.
----
* {{Gonk}}: How Peter perceives him.
* KavorkaMan: He's not conventionally attractive by any means, but somehow he's hooked up with two beautiful girls.
* SitcomArchnemesis: To Peter, who is consistently baffled as to how Pat is more popular than he is.
* TheStrategist: He's the only other member of the Strategy Club with Christa. Not that anyone knows what the Strategy Club is.
[[/folder]]

!Hanover High School Faculty

[[folder:Vice Principal Keene]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Matt Miller

Hanover High's vice principal.
----
* GoodCopBadCop: If Mr. Kraz can be trusted, then he plays the Bad Cop to Ms. Shapiro's Good Cop when he cancels off-campus lunch.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: Tries to hamper Peter's investigation, [[spoiler:when Peter gets too close to the faculty complaint records.]]
* TurnInYourBadge: A non-police version of this, when he bans Peter from filming ''American Vandal'' on school property.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ms. Shapiro]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Karly Rothenburg

Dylan Maxwell's Spanish teacher, and the presumed target of the vandalism.
----
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Dylan and Mr. Kraz certainly think so, but neither are entirely trustworthy.
* TheChessmaster: According to Mr. Kraz, who compares her to [[TheSpymaster Lord Varys]] from ''{{Series/Game Of Thrones}}''.
* TheConspiracy: May have been part of one with Alex Trimboli to [[spoiler:frame Dylan]]. It's never made clear.
* CoolTeacher: Most students view her as this. It's only Dylan and his friends who see her as an:
* EvilTeacher: To Dylan, and possibly to other students she dislikes.
* FramingTheGuiltyParty: Possibly what she believes she is doing by [[spoiler:framing Dylan,]] as well as strong-arming a student into claiming another student cheated on a test.
* GoodCopBadCop: According to Mr. Kraz, she plays the Good Cop to Vice Principal Keene's Bad Cop in the plot to expose the culprit behind the vandalism. She came up with the plan to cancel off-campus lunch, then he carried it out, and she promised to intercede with him if a student came forward with the vandal's identity. That is, if anything Kraz says can be trusted.
* JerkassHasAPoint: for a debatable value of 'jerkass'. Dylan's own (and other) social media footage proves that his bad reputation, particularly in Ms Shapiro's class, was thoroughly earned. Peter points out in the first episode that Dylan's past behaviour, which has been properly documented, is one of the factors in the strong case against him. Dylan admits to acting out in her class "like, 4 times a week, maybe?"
* NeverMyFault: [[spoiler:After Dylan's innocence is proven and he is reinstated at school, she admits she was wrong about him spraying the cars, but flatly refuses to accept responsibility for her mistake, instead claiming that Dylan's own actions made him look guilty.]]
* SternTeacher: The most generous interpretation of her behavior.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: It's a matter of debate how "villainous" she is, but she does [[spoiler: attempt to frame Dylan for slashing her tire]]. Nonetheless, she is well-loved by most of the school.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mr. Rafferty]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Sean Carrigan

Coach of the football team at Hanover High, and 2016 Teacher of the Year.
----
* AmbiguouslyEvil: [[spoiler:There's something ''off'' about Mr. Rafferty. Kraz claims "he's roofied people," he has a suspicious complaint on file for "inappropriate conduct with a student," and he definitely did something to make someone angry enough to trash his office. He also possibly put Christa in a position where she would be injured as revenge for her ruining his pep rally. Then there's the matter of what he whispered to her when she was on the ground. It's never really answered.]]
* CoolTeacher: How most students see him.
* CreepyGymCoach: Mr Rafferty appears to be extremely genial and popular, but it's hinted at that he's abused his position from time to time; one student believes he "roofied people" and Peter learns that there's a mention on his file of showing "inappropriate conduct with a student. And there's whatever he said to Christa after knocking her down and injuring her, but it's never explicitly confirmed how sinister he is.
* EvilIsPetty: Christa ruined one game for the team, and [[spoiler:he set her up to be potentially seriously injured.]]
* EvilTeacher: At the very least, he [[spoiler:set Christa up to be injured just for a stunt]], but it's further implied that [[spoiler:he's had sex with some students]].
* HotTeacher: How some students see him.
** SilverFox: His age is apparently not a detriment.
* HyperAwareness: He immediately catches on to Peter's secret camera.
* KarmaHoudini: the footage of Christa's kicker tryout proves a case of teacher bullying at least (there was no reason whatsoever for another player to tackle her-kicker's don't get tackled on the field-and she clearly wasn't warned it was coming, so she didn't brace herself. Not to mention that whatever he said to her while she was recovering from that was bad enough that she made a formal complaint), and not only does the complaint (of 'inappropriate conduct ''with a student'' ') get swept under the rug, but he wins Teacher of the Year.
* NeverMyFault: when you look back, it's clear he blames Christa and her Rosh Hashana protest for the football team losing a big game. Her protest disrupted a ''pep rally'', which led to one of the football team's key players being made ineligible to play that game for joining her walkout. First off, as Coach he should have made sure that every player on the team knew the consequences for walking out of school (it's not like this is the first time Christa's done something like this), secondly also as Coach, he should be able to adjust his strategy to cover ''one'' missing player.
* ReallyGetsAround: Described as a "serial-dater", usually with moms.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Comes off this way much of the time. He's extremely forthcoming and helpful in interviews, he chooses not to get Peter in trouble for violating Keene's ban, and he seeks out Peter and Sam in order to answer their questions when it seems as though they suspect him of something. [[spoiler:He still seems like he's hiding something.]]
* RiddleForTheAges: What did he say to Christa Carlyle after she got knocked on her back? [[spoiler: If she did plan the dick drawings in revenge for him getting away with, even rewarded, for his behavior towards her, as[[{{Lampshaded}} Peter and Sam point out]] it must have been something really bad for her to be pushed to such extremes.]]
* SadisticTeacher: [[spoiler:He set Christa up for a tackle drill unnecessarily, likely just to get back at her for her Rosh Hashana stunt.]]
* SmugSnake: Especially to [[spoiler:Christa]].
* TeacherParentRomance: Has a thing for moms. Including [[spoiler:Mackenzie's mother.]]
* TeacherStudentRomance: [[spoiler:Hinted at, but never confirmed.]]
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: [[spoiler:Maybe. It's implied that something was covered up by the school, but we never know what.]]
* WickedStepfather: Although they aren't actually married, Mackenzie views him as this, and [[spoiler:that's why she trashes his office.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mr. Krazinski]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Ryan O'Flanagan

History teacher at Hanover High. Likes to be called "Kraz."
----
* ApatheticTeacher: One who cares far more about seeming cool than teaching history.
* CoolTeacher: Tries so hard to be this, but his attempts to be cool just end up making him really bad at his job.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Yes, he apparently thought there would be no consequences to trashing teachers and students, describing underage girls as "hot", and accusing Rafferty of rape. Although he might be right about that last one.
* FiredTeacher: But unlike most examples in fiction, he completely deserves it, and there's no student campaign to get him back.
* GossipyHens: A RareMaleExample. He spouts all sorts of rumors about his fellow staff members.
* GreenEyedMonster: He's extremely jealous of Ms. Shapiro getting more insurance money to pay for her damaged car than him, and he can be seen storming off in a huff when Mr. Rafferty wins Teacher of the Year.
* NeverMyFault: He does admit that he ''probably'' wouldn't have said some of the stuff he did, but seems to hold Peter and Sam more responsible than himself.
* RealityEnsues: Turns out that a teacher who trash talks his colleagues and comments on how hot his female students are in an attempt to seem cool won't be employed for very long.
* TooDumbToLive: Or rather, too dumb to work. Did he really think he could get away with saying what he did on video?
* TotallyRadical: His way of trying to come off as cool reeks of this.
* UnreliableNarrator: It's unclear if anything he says about the other teachers can be taken literally.

[[folder:Denise and Greg Kavanagh]]
->'''Denise portrayed by:''' Dendrie Taylor
->'''Greg portrayed by:''' Larry Joe Campbell

Dylan Maxwell's mother and stepfather. Both convinced of his innocence.
----
* GoodParents: Probably better than Dylan deserves.
* GoodStepfather: Greg is also this to Dylan, despite Dylan trying to paint him as a regular WickedStepfather.
* ParentsKnowTheirChildren: Denise can always tell when Dylan lies to her, and so she knows he is innocent of drawing the dicks.
* YoureNotMyFather: Dylan's attitude towards Greg.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mr. Janson]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Frank Farmer

!St. Bernardine's

[[folder:Kevin [=McClain=]]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Travis Tope

A socially awkward bullied kid who becomes the prime suspect in the Turd Burglar case.
----
* AmbiguousDisorder: Kevin's awkward mannerisms, smug persona and elaborately anal-retentive methods of "properly" enjoying tea can all be indicators that he is on the autism spectrum somewhere, and it is discussed in-universe by one of his classmates, but dismissed just as quickly. Though said classmate doesn't know Kevin very well, and certainly isn't qualified to make or dismiss a diagnosis.
* ButtMonkey: He's constantly getting mocked at school, even if he doesn't see the other kids' jokes as taunts.
* ClearMyName: Chloe gets Peter and Sam to make American Vandal season 2 in order to revoke Kevin's expulsion and clear his name of being The Turd Burglar. [[spoiler:He isn't. But he did cause the Brownout.]]
* EarnYourHappyEnding: mostly. While at the end of season 2 [[spoiler: his expulsion and his house arrest for causing the Brownout stands, his charges drop from three counts to one, and given the circumstances and his age his record should be sealed when he turns 18. He sincerely talks about looking forward to a new start at public school next year, and most importantly he has Tanner and Chloe back in his life as close friends.]]
* {{Expy}}: His tea review vlog series seems to make him one of Reviewbrah.
* {{Foil}}: To Dylan. While Dylan is [[spoiler:genuinely innocent]] of drawing the dicks, [[spoiler:Kevin did the Brownout, as well as being pretentious to Dylan's dumb.]]
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: Kevin presents himself as an intellectual. However, he tries to insult Damarcus's poetry but completely blanks trying to think of a famous poet to compare him to.
* MaliciousMisnaming: Dubbed "Shit Stain [=McClain=]" since he was a kid for sitting on grass that made it look like he soiled himself.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Kevin had this reaction after [[spoiler:the Brownout, not realising how many people drank the lemonade (he doesn't think it's very good) or understanding just how dramatic an effect the Malitol would have (it was provided by someone else). It's one of the reasons (besides his manipulation by the Dean of Students) that he confesses to the police.]]
* ThenLetMeBeEvil: A variation. He embraced the embarrassing nicknames he received and cruel pranks so he could fit in.
* TrueArtIsIncomprehensible: What comes to mind when watching a performance by Kevin's 'band' The Horsehead Collective. Honestly, it would probably be a huge hit on the avant-garde scene.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:[=DeMarcus=] Tillman]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Melvin Gregg

St. Bernie's star basketball player and one of the Turd Burglar suspects.
----
* BittersweetEnding: At the end of season 2, [=Demarcus=] has had [[spoiler: his blackmail photos released, been sentenced to community service, and probably lost several scholarship offers.]] However, [=Demarcus=] credits this as an impetus to change his life in positive ways;[[spoiler: he's taken control of his life by ditching his Puppet Master sidekick and refusing to follow his father's dictates for college. For his community service he's started a free basketball clinic for the kids in his low-rent neighborhood, which he loves and credits for helping him rediscover his love of the game. He ends up choosing to go to college at Villanova (which should be noted had the number 1 ranked college basketball program in real life that same year), evidently still on full scholarship. And since [=Demarcus=] seems to be on track for a future as a professional athlete, the catfishing and subsequent moral dilemma and scandal is quite possibly a harsh but needed lesson that will help him avoid much worse pitfalls later in life.]]
* BookDumb: Although it's not really his fault: Athletes get easier classes on purpose so they can focus on training. He gets Biology credits by taking Zoology (where you get points in a test by correctly naming a picture of a ''zebra''). Still, he does show some interest and talent in English.
* BreakTheHaughty: Although nowhere near as bad as some examples, [=DeMarcus=] can be somewhat dismissive and entitled as part of his BigManOnCampus role. [[spoiler:It's revealed that he is deeply lonely and sad inside due to feeling like everyone only values him for sport.]]
* FriendToAllChildren: At the end of Season 2, [[spoiler: he is given community service for being an unwilling accomplice to the Turd Burglar. He is seen serving by coaching kids in basketball, claiming he enjoys it dearly.]]
* HiddenDepths: He managed to write a decent poem, even if it got him mocked by students from rival schools when the poem was posted without his approval.
* HundredPercentAdorationRating: Every student at St. Bernie's loves [=DeMarcus=], to the point where it's suggested that he can get away with murder.
* ItsAllAboutMe: [=DeMarcus=] is a friendly guy who's never mean to anyone, but he's also extremely self-involved because of his fame and privileges. He openly takes phone calls during class and he is frequently condescending or passively insulting to the people around him.
* KarmaHoudini: The star of St. Bernie's decorated basketball team and easily the most popular student in school. He is known for toeing the line every now and then, going as far as answering his phone in class, because he knows he is that valuable to the school. As a matter of fact, his theorized motive as a suspect in the Turd Burglar case is pretty much "because he could get away with it". [[spoiler: ultimately subverted: he was a part of the attacks, but only because he was being blackmailed by the true mastermind. In the end he gets community service for his role, and more importantly, his reputation is ruined.]]
* LonelyAtTheTop: As king of the school and a future basketball superstar, he's extremely popular and friendly with everybody, but deep down he's incredibly lonely and suspects all his friends of being phony.
* LovableJock: Everyone at school adores him and, to be fair, he's also presented as being a pretty nice guy, despite Peter and Sam's suspicions.
* NiceGuy: He's fairly pleasant, even when being pressed about potentially being the Turd Burglar. He even apologizes to Peter for walking out of the interview.
* SheepInSheepsClothing: He is beloved by students and teachers alike for being a popular , yet kind and friendly student, but is he? [[spoiler: Yes, yes he is. Zig-zagged in that he did commit one of the Turd Burglar attacks, but he was being blackmailed.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Lou Carter]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' [=DeRon=] Horton

[=DeMarcus=]'s right hand man who sees himself as [=DeMarcus=]'s best friend, but everyone knows Lou is more like his personal assistant/butler.
----
* ControlFreak: A role he apparently shares with [=DeMarcus=]'s dad.
* FairWeatherFriend: Implied to be this to [=DeMarcus=], [[spoiler:and especially as he calls the police on his idol just to keep him in line]].
* TheManBehindTheMan: Perry Coleman says he and [[=DeMarcus=]'s father are this to [=DeMarcus=], and [[spoiler:his scenes with [=DeMarcus=] later in the season confirm this, though [=DeMarcus=] is able to get out from under his "best friend"'s thumb by the end of the season.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:Obviously qualifies when it's revealed he is [=DeMarcus=]'s co-puppetmaster, but keeping his "best friend" apart from his idol and calling the cops on Skip Day solidify him as this.]]
* TheSvengali: Played with. Lou clearly sees himself as this, but he's mostly [=DeMarcus=]'s lackey, but they do have a similar relationship of Lou controlling [=DeMarcus=], such as [[spoiler:calling the police on his idol.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tanner Basset]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Jay Lee

Kevin's best friend who suspects him of being the Turd Burglar.
----
* DisproportionateRetribution: When Tanner reports Kevin to the police as the Turd Burglar, it's eventually implied that he did it because he resented Kevin for calling the police onto Skip Day. [[spoiler: it was Lou]] Further investigation shows [[spoiler: him and Chloe making out in the background... with the implication that he really held a grudge against Kevin for the cops interrupting ''that'']].
* NiceGuy: Comes off as this.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: [[spoiler:He is right about Kevin doing The Brownout, but not for his suspicion that Kevin did it as an act of revenge for years of bullying.]]
* RomanticRunnerUp: Chloe's not-so subtle feelings for Kevin during her interviews make it seem like Tanner was this for her.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Although quite why it broke up seems to be uncertain.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: He's Kevin's (mostly ex) friend, but he still reported him to the police.[[/folder]]

[[folder:Chloe Lyman]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Taylor Dearden

A close friend of Kevin and Tanner who thinks Kevin is innocent and suspects [=DeMarcus=].
----
* LetsGetDangerous: Wears a wire during her meeting with Drexler and pushes the conversation to implicate the teacher in any wrong doing.
* NiceGirl: No subversion, no dark secret, Chloe really is just a nice person who wants to help her friend Kevin.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jenna Hawthorne]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Kiah Stern

A popular girl at school who was the envy of most students due to her seemingly perfect life.
----
* BrokenAce: First after the Kendall Jenner incident humiliated her from her "pretty, nice, and very wealthy" position at school, but especially once [[spoiler:she gets catfished.]]
* FallenPrincess: A petty example to the school when it turns out she lied about being friends with Kendall Jenner, and a more serious example once [[spoiler:she turns out to be behind one of the Turd Burglar attacks]].
* LipstickLesbian: She's an attractive young woman who was said to have had a girlfriend.
* OldShame: She posted a picture jokingly stating that she was best friends with Kendall Jenner, but after it was revealed that she waited five hours in line just for an autograph and picture with Kendall, the other students turned on Jenna and labeled her a fraud. Even her girlfriend broke up with her as a result.
%% * RichBitch: Subverted. Jenna is a genuine NiceGirl, [[spoiler:but she still did one of the pranks.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Drew Pankratz]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Jonathan Saks

A theater kid who has pictures of him in a diaper exposed to the school.
----
* CampStraight: He's a theater kid who has platonic friendships with all the theater girls. One guy lets Drew take his girlfriend to prom after getting grounded because he knows Drew wouldn't be a threat.
* EmbarrassingNickname: "Diaper Drew" as a result of the pictures of him leaking.
* TakeOurWordForIt: We never get to see exactly ''what'' is going on in the [[spoiler: diaper video leaked during The Dump]], but we do know that a) it was extremely graphic and humiliating, and b) it apparently involved some supposedly impossible feat of flexibility.
->'''Paul''': ''God'' did not design us to bend that way. ''Certainly'' not for that reason.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Perry Coleman]]

St. Bernie's star athlete in 2016. He is currently studying at UCLA on a sports scholarship.
----
* EvilCounterpart: To [=DeMarcus=], who is a NiceGuy with a few flaws and weaknesses, but not malicious, vs. the previous St. Bernie's sports star, who was an unrepentant sexist bully.
* TheGhost: His exploits are much mentioned but he's never seen.
* JerkJock: He was beloved by everyone, and he abused his popularity to get away with pranks and bullying.
* KarmaHoudini: Offscreen. When he was a senior at St. Bernie's, he stole the school's mascot costume, and when a girl complained about it, he used it to mock her over the internet for months. Nobody looked into it, and he ended up graduating and going to UCLA.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Paul Schnorrenberg]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Miles J. Harvey

An overly religious student who unknowingly broke open a pinata containing feces in front of his English class.
----
* HolierThanThou: Comes with being a High School kid obsessed with Catholicism. He gets in long, loud arguments with the English teacher over Kurt Vonnegut and his portrayal of sex in his works.
* TheFriendNoOneLikes: Seems to be this to most of St. Bernie's.
* TheFundamentalist: He is heavily religious to the point where he argues with his English teacher's literary choices due to his belief that they go against God's word. Even ''the nuns'' think he could turn it down a notch.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Grayson Wentz]]
->'''Portrayed by:''' Jeremy Culhane

A former student at St. Bernie's who was expelled for a prank that involved writing crude things through other students' twitter accounts.
----
* BeneathSuspicion: Only brief seen [[spoiler:working at the phone repair store.]]
* BigBad: [[spoiler:For Season Two, as he is the mastermind behind the Turd Burglar pranks.]]
* TheDogWasTheMastermind: Just a guy that got kicked out of high school for a few mildly offensive tweets. He works at a phone repair kiosk, where he is perfectly willing to talk to Peter and Sam. He is mentioned sparingly and appears on camera ''once'', [[spoiler: until it's revealed ''he is the Turd Burglar'', that is]].
* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:He catfished a number of people, mostly students but at least one teacher as well, pretending to be a pretty girl who tricked these people into sending graphic photos and videos that he would later use to blackmail them into committing the poop crimes. What's worse is he still shares the photos and videos when he knows he's about to be exposed.]]
* NonActionGuy: He doesn't actually [[spoiler:commit any of the Turd Burglar acts himself]], he just [[spoiler:blackmails people who bring their phones to the repair kiosk.]]
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: [[spoiler: While the Turd Burglar was never quite " harmless" and was always taken seriously, for most of the season he was supposedly only guilty of [[ToiletHumor poop-related pranks]] that damaged a school's reputation, with the brownout standing out as his most damaging act. The season finale adds catfishing,privacy violations, identity theft, blackmail and online stalking to his list of crimes, and it earns him two years in a federal facility.]]

One of the janitors at St. Bernardine. He was allegedly a key witness to the last Turd Burglar attack, but he quit suddenly the day after.
----
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Even the teachers refer to him only as "Hot Janitor". Deconstructed, when Peter and Sam could not even get his name and had to reach him through someone who bought shrooms off of him.
* HiddenDepths: during his interview, he reveals some pretty in-depth knowledge of local botany and methods of sustainable farming.
* KickedUpstairs: He didn't actually quit: He was quietly transferred to a sister school with better pay. Presumably, the best way to keep him quiet was to leave him content.
* NoNameGiven: His actual name is never revealed.

!The Morning Show 9

[[folder:Peter Maldonado]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Tyler Alvarez

* KidDetective: Along with Sam.
* NerdGlasses: Wears these.

->'''Portrayed by''': Griffin Gluck

* KidDetective: With Peter.

[[folder: Dylan Maxwell]]
->'''Portrayed by''': Jimmy Tatro

He matures a lot over the course of
[[Characters/AmericanVandalSeason1 Season 1, which leaves him a much sadder, more introspective character.
Oceanside characters]]

->'''Portrayed by''': Genevieve Hannelius

->'''Portrayed by''': Aylan Bayramoglu

->'''Portrayed by''': Cody Wai-Ho Lee

* ForeignExchangeStudent: From Canada.
* NiceGuy: His defining characteristic.

* SmugSnake: Especially to [[spoiler:Christa]].
* TeacherParentRomance: Has a thing for moms. Including [[spoiler:Mackenzie's mother.]]
* TeacherStudentRomance: [[spoiler:Hinted at, but never confirmed.]]
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: [[spoiler:Maybe. It's implied that something was covered up by the school, but we never know what.]]

----
* ApatheticTeacher: One who cares far more about seeming cool than teaching history.

Though said classmate doesn't know Kevin very well, and certainly isn't qualified to make or dismiss a diagnosis.
* ButtMonkey: He's constantly getting mocked at school, even if he doesn't see the other kids' jokes as taunts.

Added DiffLines:

* LaserGuidedKarma: pre-series. In one of her protests, Christa pours laundry detergent down the stairs to illustrate the corruption in the school system [[note]]which might actually be her last effort at peaceful means of protest, [[spoiler: about her complaint about Rafferty's behaviour towards her being swept under the rug]][[/note]]. She slips on the detergent herself, and breaks her foot. She's on crutches during the 'incident', and during her early interviews for the show.

* JerkassHasAPoint: Coach Rafferty might consider her a jerk for contributing to the football team's loss (of one game), but Christa is absolutely correct in her main point: religious freedom ''is'' more important than high school football.

* NeverMyFault: when you look back, it's clear he blames Christa and her Rosh Hashana protest for the football team losing a big game. Her protest disrupted a ''pep rally'', which led to one of the football team's key players being suspended for joining her walkout. First off, as Coach he should have made sure that every player on the team knew the consequences for walking out of school (it's not like this is the first time Christa's done something like this), secondly also as Coach, he should be able to adjust his strategy to cover ''one'' missing player.

If she didn't already have the skills to edit the footage (unlikely), she could have just asked the Twitch helpdesk, or looked up instruction videos on YouTube, and where to find free software she could use to do editing. If someone asks her why she's topless from the back? She's already telling Dylan she was changing - just say that she spilled her between-rounds drink on her top, and she intended to change out of view of the camera.]]
