* SkewedPriorities: Ash teasingly, and then more seriously, accuses Amy of having them, especially since she proves willing to AFriendInNeed actively disregard her own safety to protect her bodyguards, when her death would be a massive diplomatically, and they'll likely be killed if she dies anyway.

* TheReliableOne: Keriagon is given the least amount of focus of the six heroes, as he fills a utilitarian role: setting up safe zones and reading instead of engaging in relationship drama.

*MayflyDecemberRomance: His wife has been long dead by the time the story starts.

*NoSocialSkills: Discussed and Played Straight; to the point that Amy thinks Perrault hates her while he believes they have bonded nicely.
--> "Why are you lamenting at me? I am positive I did not misread anything."
*PointyEars: Perrault and his son, Ashling, both have long pointed ears and excellent hearing.
*StrongFamilyResemblance: Amy compares Ash and Perrault, noting that Perrault looks like a faded-photocopy of Ash. Piper also points out that while Ash looks like Perrault, he is his mother’s son in terms of personality.

*TheHeavy: As the shadow she has the most interactions with the heroes.
*LeakingCanOfEvil: Due to Sepia slowly freeing her from her prison
*LivingShadow: The heroes continually have to deal with her shade. They don’t know exactly what it wants, but they work under the assumption it’s hostile.

*ParentalSubstitute: He’s Ash’s godfather and took care of him for about fifty years after Ash’s mother’s death.

*RoyalFavorite: He’s Mabrieen’s closest advisor and her Lifemate.

*RapeAsBackstory: Doubles as ChildByRape and RapeByProxy, as Echalson was produced by Sepia compelling Mabrieen to sleep with an elder who was courting Sepia. May also be considered ImpliedRape, as the word isn't explicitly used, but all of the connotations are there.

!!Fairy Guards

*AmazonianBeauty: Tall, Muscled, and Curvy
*HalfIdenticalTwins: Discussed and subverted; Amy thinks to herself about how the media tries to do this with Illaca and Lyon; due to their similar features, but Illaca is bigger than Lyon all the way around.
*HeroOfAnotherStory: Illaca and Lyon were dispatched to pick up Tyghanire.
*NavelDeepNeckline: Illaca’s dress tunic for the Hallow’s Eve ball has a plunging neckline

*NavelDeepNeckline: Lyon’s dress tunic for the Hallow’s Eve ball has a plunging neckline by virtue of being a replica of his sister’s.

*BilingualBonus: Some of Giselle’s pet names for Amy are not traditional English or American ones. Particularly noticeable is ‘my little cabbage.’
*CursedWithAwesome: Not from Giselle herself, but becoming a revenant is supposed to be a curse.
*DreamWalker: One of Giselle’s abilities as a revenant is to enter the dreams of those who summon her.
*FriendlyGhost: Giselle is nothing but helpful throughout the novel, mostly to Amy, but to Cody and Remmington as well.
*LongLostRelative: Revealed to be Ash’s mother, which Stephan knew, but died before he could surprise her.
*TheLostLenore: To Perrault, who went searching for her after her death, only to be told that her book had been destroyed. His absence correlates directly to Ash joining the Guard.
*MonochromeApparition: Giselle is a silvery monochrome
*TheNicknamer: Of the cute variety, as Giselle knows everyone's names, but rotates through an endless supply of pet names for them anyway.
*OurGhostsAreDifferent: Revenant's are cursed, dead humans.
*ParentalSubstitute: To Amy and Cody, who treat her as a beloved aunt, and possibly to Stephan as well.
*SilkHidingSteel: The picturesque young noble woman, with artful curls and a fancy dress full of bows, but turns out she’s responsible for protecting Capricorn from Sepia for a couple of hundred years, and she saves Amy’s life by running to Price Echalson for help.
*SpiritAdvisor: To Amy and Cody, predominantly, but Remmington also receives advice when he summons her.

*AffectionateNickname: Keriagon allows Amy to call him “Keri”, because he understands nicknames to be a sign of affection among humans.
*ChildhoodFriends: With Remmington
*DyingAlone: Discussed, had Amy and Remmington not come to his rescue, he would have died in a basement, thinking Remmington betrayed him.
*GentlemanSnarker: Keriagon is the son of a Fairie Lord, and will absolutely cut people to shreds with a word or two.
*GoodIsNotSoft: Amy describes Keri as a sweetheart, but he puts every other character in their place at least once, even Princess Capricorn.
*HealingHands: Keriagon specializes in healing magic; to the point that he can heal without leaving scars. He also figures out that there’s something still wrong with Amy after Capricorn had healed her (twice).
*HeterosexualLifePartners: With Remmington
*PlatonicKissing: Keriagon has a mind-reading ability that utilizes kissing.
*PseudoRomanticFriendship: Remmington grooms Keri while he is unconscious, and takes ahold of his hand when Keri starts to apologize for doubting him. They also share a bed from the time Keri is picked up onward.
*Really700YearsOld: Keriagon is five hundred and seventy-two years old. How old he looks isn't specifically stated but he presumably looked to be in his late teens when Ash looked like a seven year old and Ash ages at twice his rate.
*TheRedMage: Keriagon’s speciality is healing, but he has a lot of varied magic.
*RecruitmentByRescue: Amy and Remmington locate Keriagon and patch him up with Ash’s help before he joins in the party
*SpockSpeak: Keriagon speaks far more formally than the rest of his friends.
*TheStoic: Keriagon is, by far, the calmest of the heroes. He is also said to have a lot of micro-expressions rather than out right ones.

*AffectionateNickname: In addition to Cody being short for Dakota, Amy and Tyler occasionally call him ‘Cotes’.
*AngerBornOfWorry: Punches Piper, then tries to start a fist-fight with Ashling when the latter asks to be killed.
*AudienceSurrogate: Even more so than Remmington or Amy
*BigBrotherInstinct: His hatred of the fey stems from this.
*ChronicHeroSyndrome: His need to go help whatever security guard may have been injured by the shadow is what gets him compelled.
*DarkAndTroubledPast: Cody and his mom, Michelle, were both physically abused by his biological father, Michael. After a stint in jail, Michael got paroled and immediately killed Cody’s step-father, Stephan, to “reclaim what was his.”
*GoodScarsEvilScars: Cody has a small scar running through one of his eyebrows.
*FightingFromTheInside: While he’s compelled, Cody tries really hard not to think about the fact that Ash is in the room behind him.
*ForgottenFirstMeeting: He met Ash when he was nine, and while he technically remembered the meeting, he didn’t remember who he had met.
*FriendsAllAlong: When Keriagon realizes they’re being followed by someone; he tries to lead the group away. Once Ash realizes who Keri is steering them away from; he starts to laugh.
*HotBlooded: Cody is the loudest and brashest of the protagonists by a wide margin. It’s probably easier to count scenes in which he doesn’t start some kind of argument.
*INeedAFreakingDrink: When Ash starts to tell him about the blood binding, Cody stops him and sends him back to the mini-bar for alcohol.
*InelegantBlubbering: After Ashling asks Piper to be execute him, Cody tries to start a fight with both of them, Angrish screams at Ash, and finally breaks down sobbing when Ash hugs him.
*InformedAttribute: Cody is said to hate the Fey for ‘kidnapping his sister’; but his legendary IrrationalHatred is only shown through some antagonism towards Ash and his habit of going out of his way to learn about and exploit a couple of their strengths and weaknesses.
*MagicalAccessory: Cody wears a bracelet that grants him strength when he’s protecting someone else.
*MindControlEyes: Amy notes that his pupils dilated like Capricorn’s when he was compelled.
*MySisterIsOffLimits: Zig-zagged as Cody will actively come between Ash and Amy if Ashling is the implied pursuer, but seems perfectly content to let Amy pursue him, even going so far as to lash out at Ash when he accidently hurts Amy.
*SpannerInTheWorks: Cody manages to save Amy from the shadow with a lucky text message, led the other heroes almost immediately to Capricorn because he understands how credit/debit cards work, almost starts a fight that puts Amy in danger but draws Kaynick out of the shadows, and convinces the party not to give up despite being outmaneuvered and 'out of time'. He also sucker punched Piper to save Ash’s life.
*SuccessfulSiblingSyndrome: Cody fully believes that he’s just Amy’s ‘screw-up’ older brother, and everyone knows it.
*TechnicallyASmile: Although several characters smile for less than altruistic reasons, Cody is easily the worst offender
*TheFriendNobodyLikes: Cody seems to have shades of this with his human friends, considering that all of them (save Tyler) sided with Big John; the guy who is engaged to Cody’s ex-girlfriend and agreed to become his handler without asking him about it first. Then again Cody hasn’t told his other friends that Big John never spoke to him about becoming his handler before accepting the position.
*TheyreCalledPersonalIssuesForAReason: When Keriagon is checking Cody over for injuries he mentions some “bone scarring” that’s so old it wasn’t healed by magic and says Cody may not even remember the injury. Cody very sharply replies that he does, and once Amy confirms it was from his father, no more is said about it.
*VitriolicBestBuds: Ash and Cody are constantly at each other’s throats verbally, but Cody specifically tries not to think about Ash being in the room behind him while compelled, which allows Ash to save him.
*WeNeedADistraction: Remmington breaks up a fight between Cody and Ash by suggesting Cody be a distraction.
*WhatTheHellAreYou: Cody gets one from Remmington, when he pulls a knife one Remmington and snarls something about his immunity before Remmington can choke him out
*WhoWantsToLiveForever: Cody isn’t thrilled by his ascension to Elder, as he knows his best friend and mother will grow up without him.

*AffectionateNickname: Amy started calling Ashling “Ash” within minutes of meeting him. He took it as a sign of their impending friendship, and so didn’t correct her.
*BadassInDistress: Over the course of the story, Ashling eats poisoned flowers, gets hit with a sleep spell, pulls from the Fade, and then gets a spike shoved through his belly.
*BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: A major factor in Ash’s devotion to Amy is that she accepted him when they first met, reasoning that his HalfHumanHybrid status would be a huge asset in guarding a human.
--> “In the seconds everyone else used to convince themselves that, despite my best performances, I would never be enough, you turned me into such an advantage that Michelle started asking about other half-human guards.”
*BetterAsFriends: With Capricorn, as she’s more in love with Remmington and he’s more in love with Amy.
*BilingualBonus: Anyone who speaks French will know that Ash sometimes intentionally mis-translates his own French for Amy to make it sound less romantic.
--> (You stun me, my other half.) “What?” “I said, 'You're dazzling.'.”
*BloodSplatteredWarrior: In Amy’s FlashbackNightmare, Ashling is soaked in blood from his fight with Dresnik, either Lannies or Connador, and two unknown elves.
*BodyguardCrush: Doubles as InconvenientAttraction; as Ash perceives being attracted to his much younger charge immoral.
*ChildhoodFriends: With Capricorn
*CuddleBug: Invoked and played straight; Ash is one in bed. Amy doesn’t seem to mind, but it’s why Cody won’t sleep in the same bed as him.
*DeviousDaggers: Subverted; Ash uses daggers as his primary weapons but he’s a MagicKnight, not an assassin.
*DrivenToSuicide: When Amy is infected with necromagic, Ash asks Piper to execute him.
*EatingTheEyeCandy: Ash is not only visibly stunned by Amy’s appearance in the Hell’s Vestibule chapter; he tells her so. He has an even stronger reaction to her wearing his night shirt in a later chapter, doing a full on DoubleTake.
*EverythingSoundsSexierInFrench: Conversational; Ash wears a shirt that reads “Merde sounds better in French.”
*FairySexy: Amy consistently refers to Ash as ‘pretty’ and he is an apparent favorite with teenage girls.
*FantasticArousal: When sharing secrets with Amy, Ash reveals that his ears are ‘sensitive’ to the touch, but not in the way she previously thought.
*FireForgedFriends: With Remmington, complete with Remmington calling him Ash.
*HalfHumanHybrid: The only one seen in the story, but not the only one of his kind. In fact, fairy hybrids are apparently common enough to warrant their own species title: ‘Fair’
*HeroicRROD: Ash pulls from the fade to teleport Remmington to safety and immediately passes out.
*ImmuneToMindControl: Ash is immune to compulsion thanks to his father being compelled for ‘a significant amount of time’.
*InstantWakingSkills: While both Amy and Remmington can be startled awake remarkably fast, Ash’s assessment and reaction is even quicker. Particularly notably when Amy screams Remmington’s name, and Ash grabs her to roll them both off the bed.
*IntimateOpenShirt: Amy unbuttons Ash’s shirt in her EroticDream and he rolls his shoulder to display his torso without removing said shirt.
*LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Early conversations between Ash and Amy have them light-heartedly arguing with each other.
*LogicalWeakness: Ash’s hearing means he can be staggered by loud or shrill noises.
*LongHairedPrettyBoy: He’s tall, lean, and has blonde hair that reaches his shoulders which he wears back in a ponytail.
*MagicKnight: Ash wields both magic and daggers evenly, versus Remmington who defaults to the sword and Keriagon who defaults to magic.
*Nepotism: Discussed as being a criticism of Ash by both Remmington and Capricorn at different points.
*OnceDoneNeverForgotten: Cody teases Ash about him not complimenting Amy to which Ash asks, “how long before I live that down?”
*ParentalAbandonment: After his mother died, Perrault “disappeared” for about fifty years, leaving Ash with Piper.
*PointyEars: Ash and his father, Perrault, both have long pointed ears and excellent hearing.
*PoirotSpeak: Ash’s habit of putting adjectives after nouns speaks to his french heritage.
*PowerDynamicsKink: In the epilogue, Ash flirts with Amy by telling her that he is hers ‘to command’.
*PrecociousCrush: Ash has had feelings for Capricorn since he was a toddler when they were heartlinked.
*RankUp: In the last chapter, Piper tells everyone that he’s going to promote Ash to his apprentice.
*Really700YearsOld: Ashling hit his 260th Birthday sometime in the last 7 years, but his age is "more commensurate" with Amy’s 22.
*SignificantNameShift: In the second to last chapter, Remmington calls Ashling “Ash” the same way Amy and Cody do, which snaps Ash out of his crying.
*SociallyAwkwardHero: Ash has a harder time talking to three teenage girls than he does blind fighting in the same chapter.
*StrongFamilyResemblance: Amy compares Ash and Perrault, noting that Perrault looks like a faded-photocopy of Ash. Piper also comments that he looks like his father.
*TheLancer: Remmington internally refers to Ashling as his lancer.
*ThoughtTheyKnewAlready: Ash was young enough when his mother died to have forgotten her name. It doesn’t help that his father hates talking about her.
*UndyingLoyalty: To Amy and Piper
*VitriolicBestBuds: Ash and Cody are constantly at each other’s throats verbally, but Cody defends Ash while he’s unconscious and is willing to punch Piper to save his life.
*WifeHusbandry: Downplayed; Ashling has been Amy’s guard since she was emancipated at fifteen, so while he didn’t necessarily raise her (considering her more like a sister than a daughter); he still made the distinction of her being a ‘teenage child’ when they first met.
**Made slightly less creepy by the fact that he was infatuated with Capricorn throughout Amy’s teenage years.
*YourFavorite: When Ash is unconscious due to pulling from the fade, Amy says they need to get him ice cream because it’s his favorite.

*BodyguardCrush: Remmington has one on his charge, Capricorn
*BullyTurnedBuddy: For Ash, although the latter tended to view Remmington more as a rival since Remmington never set out to seriously injure him, unlike some of the other guards.
*CarpetOfVirility: Remmington, in his one shirtless scene, has chest hair complete with a line of abdominal hair.
*ChildhoodFriends: With Keriagon
*FireForgedFriends: With Ash, complete with Remmington calling him Ash.
*HeelRealization: Related to BullyTurnedBuddy, Remmington teases Amy about bullying Ash when the latter was a kid, but he is also struck a couple of times by the realization that he was, both intentionally and unintentionally, a jerk. It gets to the point that he has a GuiltInducedNightmare.
*HeroesPreferSwords: Remmington’s preferred weapon is a sword.
*HeterosexualLifePartners: With Keriagon
*LanternJawOfJustice: When teasing Ashling about Remmington, Amy mentions his "strong jawline".
*LegacyOfService: Remmington’s father is Lord Ingry’s favorite servant; and Remmington refers to himself as a ‘servant elf turned trainee’. He also shows deference towards Keriagon.
*MageKiller: Of the magic resistant variety
*MagicallyIneptFighter: Remmington doesn’t have much in the way of castable magic, but he is immune to most things.
*NoSell: When Kaynick swung a fire whip at Amy, Remmington caught it and proceeded to yank Kaynick to him, causing Kaynick’s death. Also, his immunity to iron lets him rip open Capricorn’s cage.
*PseudoRomanticFriendship: Remmington grooms Keri while he is unconscious, and takes ahold of his hand when Keri starts to apologize for doubting him. They also share a bed from the time Keri is picked up onward.
*RedHerringMole: Remmington is set up in the prologue as a traitor and throughout the narrative, he disappears to call Captain Piper or makes weird facial expressions when Amy talks about magic. Turns out he was just a MagicallyIneptFighter who reports in regularly because the last two guys disappeared.
*Really700YearsOld: Remmington is five hundred and seventy-four years old. How old he looks isn't specifically stated but he presumably looked to be in his late teens when Ash looked like a seven year old and Ash ages at twice his rate.
*RefugeInAudacity: Yes, Remmington would like to fight one spiny lever machine, please.
*StandardHeroReward: Zigzagged; Remmington is given the chance to court Capricorn at the end of the story; but it’s because she wants to marry him and his recent heroism is a convenient excuse for the courtship.
