** The ''Lost Children'' chapter is focused around Rosine and includes her two [[EliteMook insect henchmen]], who were earlier introduced when they attacked Rickert's camp with the Count just before the Eclipse. Furthermore, ''Lost Children'' broadly follows the pattern of the ''Guardians of Desire'' run from volumes 2-3 using different characters in similar roles. Rosine takes the place of the Count and Jill takes the place of Theresia. Just like ''Guardians of Desire'', it closely explores the backstory of one apostle and their MoralityPet as well as Guts' attempts to both pursue {{Revenge}} and scare away said MoralityPet with his JerkassFacade.

** Griffith’s torture, which triggers a lot of hardship on everyone. The King of Midland wanted nothing more than to step away from the throne. Griffith’s very existence centers around getting a throne. The king was already fast-tracking Griffith to what could have easily made him eligible to marry the daughter. Upon hearing of the one-night stand between Griffith and Charlotte, rather than torture Griffith outright, the king could have turned it into a “shotgun wedding.” Then, if Griffith was still pining over Guts, Griffith could have used his own resources to finance Guts for whatever he decided on, thereby pulling Guts back into the fold without being an official member. Then, the king could step down and chase just about any female who wasnt his daughter.

* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: The story about the ducks, black kite, and white hawk. Its a variation on the Ugly Duckling story, except the ‘ugly duckling’ is the bird of prey Black Kite. At first glance, it looks like the girl telling the story intends to portray herself as the black kite. When the ‘young owl’ is introduced, suddenly the black kite sounds like Guts. Add in the ‘princess duck’ and suddenly the black kite could be Casca (before the eclipse). Guts wasn’t present for the event that led to Griffith’s imprisonment, so the emotional component is likely Casca. Depending on how you interpret it, all three characters are the black kite: Guts, Casca, and the story teller.

** In the Golden Age arc, this trope is effectively inverted: the stronger the mook’s armor, the more likely he is to take on Guts, who is the one character who armor is ineffective against. In a way, the stronger the mook’s armor, the more likely they are to die.

** People can decide to change themselves, no matter who they were before or what they've done in the past. Guts spends the two years after the Eclipse running away from his problems and drenching himself in revenge and hate, to the point where he almost becomes as big a monster as the ones he's fighting. But when he realizes how his actions have distanced him from Casca and put her in mortal danger, he drops everything including his revenge on Griffith in order to rescue her before it's too late. From that point on he feels the burden of responsibility and is tortured by the lingering consequences of his past actions, but those who witness his gradual transformation can attest how much he's changed through sheer willpower and become a far more admirable person. Farnese is a particularly inspiring example of TheAtoner, having been a KnightTemplar who burned people at the stake just to satisfy her need to feel powerful and validated, but eventually deciding to leave her whole life behind in order to learn from Guts. She starts risking her life to protect Casca, the girl whom she once persecuted, and after spending her whole life being protected and cared for by others she rises to the challenge of being responsible for someone else. Even an evil being who seemingly has no redeeming qualities can do something which--even if it's far too late to make up for their crimes or save them from damnation--can still express their humanity through a last act that will change how people remember them. The Count had cast away his humanity and morality long ago, and he could have kept on living if he had sacrificed his daughter Theresea, but instead he consigned himself to eternal torment out of love for someone else. All of this doesn't change the fact that a lot of characters in the story stick to their evil ways until the very end, and the story focuses heavily on the FreudianExcuse and cruel circumstances that would drive a person to villainy, but there's an implication that whatever the circumstances, doing evil is always on some level a real choice. The God Hand may manipulate fate, but perhaps they need people to believe that their moral decisions are outside of their control in order to trick them into giving it up willingly.

* DubInducedPlotHole: The ruler of Elfhelm is called ''"Hanafubuku Ou"'', which roughly means "ruler of the flower storm". Not only did the Dark Horse Comics translator for the English manga volumes leave "Hanafubuku" as untranslated GratuitousJapanese, but they translated the gender-neutral title ''"ou"'' as "king", an assumption that turned out to be incorrect when episode 346 not only revealed that the ruler in question was female, but it wasn't even a plot twist: she was ''supposed'' to be female from the beginning. How they're going to explain this in light of their previous error is anyone's guess.

[[spoiler: Rickert [[spoiler:Rickert later points out that if Puck hadn't teamed up with Guts at that time, he probably would have lost his humanity completely.]]

** People such as Rickert and Wyald play this straight. Rickert, being the good character, pays his respects to [[spoiler: the fallen Hawks]] by making a commemorative graveyard for them [[FieldOfBlades made up of swords]]. Wyald, the despicably evil character, maims and desecrates the bodies of the people whom he previously [[spoiler: raped and tortured]] and [[DeadGuyOnDisplay set their dismembered corpses on pikes as they ride into battle.]]
** Guts, being an AntiHero, falls in-between. In the recent Boyhood arc, Guts [[spoiler: pays his final respects to the child elf who sacrificed herself in order to heal him by spreading the remaining petals of her host flower in the field of the same flowers. At this time, Guts is still the anti-social and arrogant teenager that we were introduced to at the beginning of the Golden Age arc, but the gesture reveals that, throughout the crap he had to put up with in his childhood, Guts still has a softer, emotional side to him that he's willing to show [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe to people who treat him with genuine kindness.]]]] However, throughout his Black Swordsman days, Guts is repeatedly shown desecrating the deceased, unanimated or not. This isn't on the same level as Wyald, since Guts isn't evil, but it does show that Guts is rather ruthless and that he is in a dark, dark place at this time.
** Griffith, the ambiguously evil character, plays it straight once when he is paying his respects to the un-named boy who died in his company, and he genuinely felt sad over his death [[spoiler: to the point where it was half of the motivation for him whoring himself out to General Genon.]] He later subverts this trope, starting with the fact that he attended the funeral of the Queen of Midland [[spoiler: when he was the one who orchestrated her death.]] The example the cut the deepest was upon his [[spoiler: reincarnation into the real world, where he visited the hill of swords for the fallen Band of the Hawk. However, he visited not so he could pay any respects or admit any regret for being the cause of their deaths, but to validate that he ''had no regrets for his actions during the Eclipse.'']] Big OUCH.

* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale: Well not so much rape as unwanted sexual contact. When Guts first encounters the Red Tailed Hawks and loses to Griffith, he apparently loses enough blood that he starts shivering and going into shock, resulting in Griffith telling Casca to lie with him to share body heat. Casca was apparently ''extremely'' uncomfortable about doing this and upon Guts waking up, punches him in the face. Three years later, Guts finds himself forced to do the same thing to save her, only willing to do it because she did it for him before. When she wakes up later and learns what he did, she proceeds to punch him in the face, throw all of her armor at him, and ''try to kill him with a knife that barely missed his forehead''. The implication seems to be that only a woman has any reason or right to be uncomfortable with this sort of situation. Played with, however, in that, at least in the latter incident's case, the audience is clearly expected to sympathize with Guts and see Casca's actions as extremely unreasonable.

Eh, this is a case of Square Peg Round Trope. It's not rape in either case (and character hang-ups aside, neither were even meant to be sexual either), and the entry argues against the claim it tries to make. Furthermore, Guts doesn't have a chance to properly react once he finds out what happened the first time, and is very uncomfortable with it the second time, though he tries to handle it professionally, so there really isn't any "implication" of a double standard here.

* DisappointedInYou: When Farnese's growing status as TheLoad in the group culminated in her getting lost looking for Casca, which led to a very difficult night for everyone else as they scrambled to fight off spirits and look for her, Guts doesn't yell, lecture, or even glare at Farnese. He just gives her a quiet look of disappointment before turning away without another word. It's a huge punch in the gut for her.

Changing "GodHand" to "Godhand" as the former redirects to VideoGame.God Hand.

** Although it is difficult to know for certain what Femto is thinking, his plan appears to have relied on having one of his enemies [[spoiler:become so desperate to win that he goes through a radical ritual to turn himself into an embodiment of hell]] while at the same time predicting that another enemy will [[spoiler:execute a trans-dimensional sneak attack on Femto as soon as his guard appears to be down]], so that he can [[spoiler:re-direct the attack to deal a killing blow to the first enemy, releasing a world-altering energy wave]]. {{Justified}} as he is canonically and literally TheOmniscient, or at least very close to it since Slan acknowledged that the GodHand does not know everything.
