** This was done fairly well in ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid3SnakeEater'': The overarching theme is that there is no such thing as an absolute, eternal "enemy" in real-world conflicts, which is hammered home repeatedly and flat-out stated by The Boss near the end. It ends up working well because of how closely it's tied into Snake's struggle during the story: He and The Boss had a relationship built on love, respect and trust to the point of coming off as a mother and son, but a shifting of the political winds forces them into opposing sides in a war that only one of them can win, which would eventually [[spoiler:force Snake to kill The Boss to complete his mission, the person whom meant the most to him all his life.]]
