*The90s: Earl stated that him and Prince Harlin arrived to Earth during 1945, and set his cryo-sleep device to wake them 50 years later. By then, Earth has fallen to the Zaal's ConqueringAlienPrince, Kloppen, and is a shell of its former self.

* AfterTheEnd: The series is set in a BadFuture where Earth has been mostly taken over by an AlienInvasion and cities have been left in ruins. Most humans live in makeshift villages and our hero has to steal food to survive.

** A comedic example with Catine and Judela who are parodies of Erika and Margarete from ''Anime/ToshoDaimos''. Their behaviour is more in line with [[WebVideo/DharMann Dhar Mann]]'s depictions of gold diggers and [[BastardGirlfriend Bastard Girlfriends]].

* DarkerAndEdgier: Zig-zagged. The tone of ''Daltanious'' is of a darker nature than most of Nagahama's [[Anime/BraveRaideen robot]] [[Anime/RobotRomanceTrilogy works]], with the Zaal Empire actually successfully taking over Earth and the main character even being [[spoiler: DrivenToSuicide by Kloppen. The atrocities the Helios Empire commits are also much crueler than anything [[Anime/BraveRaideen the Demon Empire]], [[Anime/CombattlerV the Campbellians]], [[Anime/VoltesV the Boazanians]] and [[Anime/ToshoDaimos the Baam Empire]] have ever done, their brutal treatment of the clones eventuallty driving one mad and causing him to turn into the series' BigBad.]] On the other hand, Kento's IdiotHero antics are PlayedForLaughs and the series has a good chunk of slice-of-life episodes.[[note]]Worth noting that while Creator/TadaoNagahama was involved in the early stages of the show, he dropped out to focus on ''Anime/TheRoseOfVersailles''. Thus, Katsutoshi Sasaki, the brains behind ''Invincible Robo Trider G7'' and ''Strongest Robo Daioja'', was appointed in his place.[[/note]]

* AristocratsAreEvil: [[spoiler: The Monarchs of both the Helios Empire, and the Zaal Empire were all a pair of self-serving bastards that crushed the livelihoods of thousands to sustain themselves. Even Proxia, which for most of the story isn't involved in the war, has a Princess who's a RichBitch.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Boy, does this anime love this trope. Catine wants to marry Kento not because she loves him, but for the throne, General Neshia pretends to be a human woman to gain access to Ochame, and [[spoiler: the Helios Empire were thought to be victims for most of the story until it was found out they created the Zaal by abusing their clones]].

* CallBack: Many to Nagahama's ''Anime/RobotRomanceTrilogy''.
** Hayato Tate/[[spoiler: Prince Harlin]] is one of [[spoiler: Kentaro Go/Prince Gohl]] from ''Anime/VoltesV''. [[spoiler: Though Harlin was blind to the suffering of his people for most of his life, Gohl wasn't, and dedicated his life to helping them. And they both suffered as a result of trying to right the wrongs of a corrupt empire]].
** Kloppen is one of Garuda from ''Anime/CombattlerV''. They take pride in being [[ConqueringAlienPrince Conquering Alien Princes]] that play a key part in overtaking planets for the BigBad, and have an ArchEnemy in the form of a CombiningMecha. Even as their constantly punished by their AbusiveParents, they do their best to win their approval. [[spoiler: If you know the plot twist of Garuda's origin, you can probably predict Supreme Commander Kloppen's as well]].

**The war depicted in the anime is eerily similar to UsefulNotes/TheColdWar. As explained on their [[Characters/FutureRobotDaltaniousAlienEmpires character pages]], Helios has parallels to the United States and Zaal has parallels to the Soviet Union. Both conflicts are explicitly stated to take place after (and be affected by) UsefulNotes/WorldWarII, involve the competitions of space/arms development, involve both sides using propaganda/censorship to soften their image and use other nations (in this case, Earth) to fight their proxy wars.
*DoomedHometown: Earth, merely for being a planet within the Zaal's vicinity.

* {{Expy}}: Most of the characters are Expies of various characters from the ''Anime/RobotRomanceTrilogy''.
** Hayato Tate/[[spoiler: Prince Harlin]] is one of [[spoiler: Kentaro Go/Prince Gohl]] from ''Anime/VoltesV''. * FantasticRacism:
** Dr. Earl is a RacistGrandpa variant. He is a father figure to [[spoiler: Prince Harlin/Hayato Tate]] and a grandfather figure to Kento and the kids. Out of all of them, he treats Kento with importance since he's an AlienPrince, while looking down on the rest of the kids and deeming them "burdens". Many episode show that he has warmed up to them, he just won't admit it.
** Princess Catine of Proxia also hates humans, except Kento, because he's descended from Emperor Palmillion and she wants to marry him for the throne. When she finds evidence that contradicts his Heliosian heritage, she becomes angry and spurns him.
** The Heliosian Generals led by Gascon hate clones, and when they're told Kento is one, not only do they defect to the villain's side, but one ''spits'' on Kento. In fact, clones are so hated, that even if all the alien planets are at war, they all agree that clones are to be looked down upon.
** This is actually the main motive of the GreaterScopeVillain of the series, [[spoiler: who was on the recieving end of it: Emperor Dolmen was born a clone of Emperor Palmillion. Being groomed from a young age to take his place should he ever die, Dolmen was forbidden from leaving his jail cell, tortured whenever Palmion was injured and treated like a lowly slave by the retainers of the Helios Empire. One day he snapped, had the Helios Empire massacred, and aimed to rule the galaxy. Even as he dies, he gives Kento one final DyingDeclarationOfHate and tells him that the generational trauma and wrath of the clones will always live on. Prince Harlin, however, establishes a Republic where all beings are equal, and makes laws where clones are given equal rights, defying Dolmen's words]].

*MenAreStrongWomenArePretty: Almost every female character is either a love interest to a male one (with the exception of Ochame), and are very pretty.

* PuppetKing: [[spoiler: The clones that served as figureheads for the Heliosian Royalty]].
* {{Robeast}}: The Bemborgs are the series' monsters of the week. They range from AnimalMecha to [[KillerRobot Killer Robots]], and can even tower over Daltanious.

* SuperRobot: Guess who?

Added DiffLines:

**The anime focuses on a group of orphans surviving after their planet was wrecked by an AlienInvasion. It's also shown that while most of the victims of the war were innocents, the few people who's lives weren't ruined by it were the top brass who benefited from the war.
**When fellow orphan Kaori tells Tanosuke her brother is probably deceased, he has a surprisingly profound observation.
