* Tagline: Advertised on Twitter and in the December 2015 trailer with the hook, "Sleepless nights shall begin", referring to the fact that with Guts branded he'll be facing nightly assaults by demons.

Guts, an antisocial mercenary with great fighting ability, used to be a captain in the famous mercenary company, the Band of the Hawk. The man he admired most was Griffith, their charismatic young leader who persuaded Guts to help him realize his dream of winning his own kingdom. There was also Casca, Griffith's dutiful female second-in-command, who resented Guts at first for eclipsing her as Griffith's favorite and for changing Griffith's personality enough that he would risk his dream for someone else. Guts and Casca went from rivals to FireForgedFriends, and grew to love each other even as Guts decided to leave Griffith's shadow so that one day he could stand beside him as an equal. Griffith interpreted this as betrayal, and at the end of a series of tragic mistakes orchestrated by the evil deities known as the God Hand, Griffith used an egg-shaped artifact called the Crimson Behelit to be reborn as the God Hand's fifth member by sacrificing Guts, Casca, and all their comrades in a hellish ceremony called the Eclipse. Guts escaped with Casca through the aid of an undead horseman called the Skull Knight, and they were sheltered by Godo the blacksmith, but Casca had lost her mind as a result of being put through absolute hell by the demons, and their ex-commander in particular, and remembered nothing of her former personality or relationship with Guts. And finally, they were both marked with the Brand of Sacrifice, ensuring that evil spirits would attack them every night until their souls were claimed. Unable to stay with Casca and face the pain of what he'd lost, Guts threw himself into a RoaringRampageOfRevenge, girding on the giant BFS Dragon Slayer to hunt the God Hand and its Apostles wherever the brand's signals led him.

Griffith interpreted this as betrayal by both of them, and through a tragic sequence of events orchestrated by the evil deities known as the God Hand, Griffith used an egg-shaped artifact called the Crimson Behelit to be reborn as a god-like being of evil by sacrificing Guts, Casca, and all their comrades in a hellish ceremony called the Eclipse. Guts escaped with Casca through the aid of an undead horseman called the Skull Knight, and they were sheltered by Godo the blacksmith, but Casca had lost her mind from the trauma, and remembered nothing of her personality or Guts. And finally, they were both marked with the brand of sacrifice, ensuring that evil spirits would attack them every night until they claimed the souls. Unable to stay with Casca and face the pain of what he'd lost, Guts threw himself into a RoaringRampageOfRevenge, girding on the giant BFS Dragon Slayer to hunt the God Hand and its Apostles wherever the brand's signals led him.

In 1990, a young mangaka named Creator/KentaroMiura began the work that would define his career. Manga/Berserk started as an obscure piece of DarkFantasy focused on a ruthless BFS-wielding ex-mercenary's quest for revenge against demonkind and his ArchNemesis Griffith, who used to be his best friend, but then in 1992 the story switched to Young Animal magazine and attracted readers with the quality of its Golden Age storyline. Since then the story has grown to 38 volumes with 40 million copies in circulation. The Golden Age Arc was adapted first in an anime by OLMIncorporated that aired from 1997–98, and again in 2013-13 by Creator/Studio4C as an animated theatrical film trilogy, but except for two Licensed Games produced by Yuke's in 1999 and 2004, there has never been an animated adaptation that went beyond that point in the manga's story. Late Arrival Spoilers for Volumes 1–17 in this plot summary:

Guts, an antisocial mercenary with great fighting ability, used to be a captain in the famous mercenary company, the Band of the Hawk. The man he admired most was Griffith, their charismatic young leader who convinced him to join his dream of winning his own kingdom. There was also Casca, Griffith's dutiful female second-in-command, who resented Guts at first for eclipsing her as Griffith's favorite and for changing Griffith's personality enough that he would risk his dream for someone else. Over time, Guts and Casca became FireForgedFriends and grew to love each other even as Guts decided to leave Griffith's shadow so that one day he could stand beside him as an equal. Griffith interpreted this as betrayal by both of them, and through a tragic sequence of events arranged by the evil deities known as the God Hand, Griffith used an egg-shaped artifact called the Crimson Behelit to be reborn as a god-like being of evil by sacrificing Guts, Casca, and all their comrades in a hellish ceremony called the Eclipse.

Two years have passed, and Guts is still on the warpath, accompanied by a little elf named Puck who joins him along the way and tries to act as his conscience. His black clothing and reputation of dread have earned him the name of the Black Swordsman. However, he is being pursued by the Holy Iron Chain Knights, a military force of the Church investigating an apocalyptic prophecy who suspect him of being a servant of evil. They are led by Farnese, an emotionally unstable noblewoman who uses religion to hide from her fears and self-loathing. At her side is Serpico, a ServileSnarker who is deadlier than he appears. Guts escapes from a brief period of capture, and follows a bad premonition back to Godo, who tells him that Casca has escaped on her own and may be in mortal danger. Realizing that he has one last chance to redeem himself, Guts follows her trail to the Tower of Conviction, where refugees are being persecuted by the fanatical inquisitor Bishop Mozgus. With the help of a brash ArtfulDodger named Isidro and a couple of good Samaritans, Guts races to save Casca while doom hangs over the entire world.

!!This anime provides examples of:

* AllCGICartoon: Trailers indicate that it will be animated mainly in a 3D style, shaded to resemble drawn artwork in a manner similar to works such as VideoGame/ValkyriaChronicles. However, traditional 2D animation may be incorporated for some frames.
* CompressedAdaptation: The first five episode titles suggest that The Black Swordsman Arc and the Chapter of Lost Children will be almost entirely cut, suggesting that a lot of exposition and backstory is going to be compressed into the first couple of episodes.
