Describe Haibane Renmei Discussion here.

  • Are these really 'wild guesses?' I thought the show dropped some extremely heavy-handed hints in this direction.
    • From my experiences with the fandom, most of these are actually commonly accepted.

I've heard Yoshitoshi A Be stated that the "haibane/black-winged haibane are the spirits of suicidal children" was not the truth, although like his work in other anime, he seems to prefer people making their own conclusion. There are some heavy-handed hints toward these guesses, but only if you interpret the watched cocoon dreams as being highly literal and the rest of the show as being highly figurative. The other described cocoon dreams don't seem particularly like suicide, unless you can sleep yourself to death. - Gattsuru

  • Sleeping pills. - Shaon
  • Yeah, and Kana could have drowned herself, and Kuu could have jumped off of something too (her dream is supposed to have been similar to Rakka's, after all). The only dream I can't think of that sort of explanation for is Hikari's. Also, even if the Haibane in general are not supposed to be the sprits of suicides, I find it hard to believe that the Sin-Bound, at least, are absolutely not supposed to be interpreted that way. Not because of the cocoon dreams, but because of what Rakka says about being convinced that she was all alone even though she wasn't (and hurting someone who cared about her because of it), and what Reki says about having given up on herself and being afraid to ask for help. - bluepenguin
    • Maybe the Haibane were taken from "our" world before they could have the idea of committing suicide. They would have simply disappeared and reappeared in Glie. Rakka could have isolated herself from other people without noticing that there was a person (the bird later on) who cared for her.
