You know, I'm really surprised that nobody ever seems to have thought of the following variation on the trope...

bluepenguin: Is the woman in "The Abominable History of the Man with the Copper Fingers" the sculptor's wife? I could swear she was just his mistress/girlfriend, but I don't have the book handy so I can't check, and I don't want to "correct" it if I can't be sure I'm right.
