Harpie Siren: I could have sworn we were on something like the seventh generation... I'll go look it up.

Tanto: Those generations are not correct. Fixing.

Later: Added the dates. There's a fair bit of overlap there, so it's just a rough timeframe.

Kinitawowi: Can one presume that Home Computers used for game playing simply don't exist?
Susan Davis: Not so much "don't exist" as "aren't relevant to a discussion of consoles."
Susan Davis: Arguably, the Colecovision and Atari 5200 were a generation of their own between the Atari Twenty Six Hundred / Intellivision / Odyssey 3 generation and the Famicom generation.
  • Coleco Vision/Adam, and MSX, developed from it and Master System (actually, SG-1000, its predeccessor), as well as C64, are a hybrid between third-generation consoles (read, NES/ Master System) and home computers. basically, they were home computers with console-level graphics and carthridge slots.

Tonestronaut: I posted a comment on the discussion page for Video Game Tropes, suggesting a new page for computer systems (Amiga, Apple II, BBC Micro, Commodore 64, IBM PC, etc.) I was told that if you can play video games on them, they should go here. Sure enough, I found them here, but I have some suggestions.

The text at the top of this page says "The various systems created for the express purpose of playing electronic games." In other words, not computer systems, because they were created to do other things besides games. But computers are listed here (and only here), so the page is saying that doesn't list computers, and then it lists them. I was wondering if the text could change to something more inclusive, like: "The various console systems created for the express purpose of playing electronic games, and computer systems known for their games." Also, "Systems by generation" would change to "Consoles by generation", and there would be a "Computers" category, in between "Portable" and "Other".

The "Systems by company" list should include both consoles and computers, so it needs Apple and Commodore, and more if my redlinks below are included. The "Other Atari Systems" redlink should be removed or replaced by redlinks from my list.

The "Other" list is repeated in "Misc", and I think it should be listed only once.

Here are some redlinks for those with too much time on their hands:

Consoles:

Computers:

  • Apple Macintosh (Mac OS has a page, but this would be a page for the hardware, with a list of games.)
  • Sharp X68000
  • TI-99, actually called the TI-99/4A, but this wiki doesn't like slashes in links.

Each of these has a Wikipedia entry, and one or more entries at old-computers.com.
