Of all the Mad Hatter characters, my favorite is probably the one-scene character L.J.Washington, from Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys:

L.J. Washington: I don't really come from outer space.

Jeffrey Goines: Oh. L. J. Washington. He doesn't really come from outer space.

L.J. Washington: Don't mock me my friend. It's a condition of mental divergence. I find myself on the planet Ogo, part of an intellectual elite, preparing to subjugate the barbarian hordes on Pluto. But even though this is a totally convincing reality for me in every way, nevertheless Ogo is actually a construct of my psyche. I am mentally divergent, in that I am escaping certain unnamed realities that plague my life here. When I stop going there, I will be well. Are you also divergent, friend?

Red Shoe: I'd probably go with Ford Prefect in some of the incarnations of The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy.

Relocated from entry(by BT The P):

//I think Hawkeye from MASH goes here too, but I don't remember enough to be sure.
//Looney Toons: No, not really. He wasn't insane, except for a while in the final movie. He just adopted a whacked-out lifestyle to allow him to cope with the war.

Kilyle: So Jack Sparrow also wouldn't quality, as being quirky but not exactly insane? I mean, he does use his eccentric behavior in ways to further his own agenda, so he's in some control of it.

bluepenguin: Removed:

They called me MAD!! MAD?! I'm not mad! Well, a little angry, but not mad." —Norton Nimnul Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers

Because that seems to be exactly the opposite of what this trope's about.

Vampire Buddha does the natter removal thing

  • This editor does his best to act like this (and he would not be surprised if most other tropers were like this as well).
    • Yup.
      • Oh yeah.
      • Wait, it's supposed to be an act?
      • It's fun anyway!
      • Normality is so boring, though. I mean, why would I want to be boring when I can have fun?
      • I concur wholeheartedly.
      • I combine this with the ability to sneak up on people unintentionally. Half my school are afraid of me now
      • Oooh! Yours too?
      • Normality? Fff, I find reality fails to measure up. Mostly.
      • I prefer normality. Luckily, normality is subjective.
      • Yeah, reality is overrated! At least the reality of others
      • I reject your reality, and substitute my own!
      • I'm just doing this to try and break the tables and make some readers the OTHER kind of mad.
      • And since they've changed the format to prevent the shifting right aspect and rendering the point moot, now I'M mad.
      • It would be more irritating if it were less funny.
      • This troper COULD be normal, but That's no fun
      • I find it helps people to underestimate me.
      • Talking to myself is the only way to guarantee an intelligent conversation.
      • Oh, what the heck, we're all barking. ^_^
      • this troper is of the opinion that being "mad" or "crazy" is actually quite fashionable nowadays in a non-conformism kind of way. Ironically, I know more people would consider themselves unusual than I do people who would say they are normal. As the joke goes, we're all unique, thats the one thing we have in common.
      • I AM NOT ALONE! YES!

Haven: Thank goodness for troper tales.
