Working Title: Musicians: From YKTTW
Alucard: I may be the only one who thinks this, but the list tends to be hard to navigate. Would anyone disagree with categorizing the list by year or genre?
Xaris: Hell, I'd help categorize it. Genre would probably be best as year doesn't mean much and is occasionally debatable.
Alucard: I'd actually like some wide-spread consent from the people who frequent this index. It could be disorienting to some, and the genre confusion will make this difficult (remember that genre labeling is also controversial). For now, I'd like to start off with just the major genres and someone else could add their own sub-categorization.
Xaris: Actually, I was thinking basic genres, rock, metal, hip hop, ect. As you said, it would be confusing to use anything more than broad categories.
Anime Otaku: I was trying to fix the Hello!Project link in the index but it has a Ptitle now and can't get it to work Here's the bit I think is needed to make a redirect to the article: ptitlec9nq8tpw
- Also I agree with adding more categories perhaps with sub folders, for instance a J-pop sub folder for the likes of H!P, though J-pop is somewhat recognised as a genre of it's own.
Alucard: Well now that it's mostly done, I'll get right on the uncategorized.
Alucard: I'm now finished. Please try to categorize the uncategorized acts. Most of them are Neoclassical Punk Zydeco Rockabilly, Japanese groups whom I don't follow, and non-commercial/non-standard artists (and for the ones who practice a more standard style, I usually simply didn't have enough artists under that genre to justify a new folder). I'd like to note that I gave at least some level of research to every single one of them; they all got a bit of attention. Sue me if I messed up some of their placements.
PS: We really need more country.
Alucard: I was thinking of making a section for Avant-garde / Art / Experimental, while heading it with "That or groups so strange as to be beyond categorization". It would also include groups who practice a variety of styles so wide that they could never fit into the other genres. These would include:
- Animal Collective
- Bjork
- Buckethead
- Cheer Up Charlie Daniels
- Yoko Kanno
- Yoko Ono
- Over Clocked Remix
- The Residents
- Sufjan Stevens
- Frank Zappa
How does this go over with everyone? (or for that matter, is this style worth noting)
I also think we should have a Ska/Reggae section, except someone else will have to do it - I don't know enough about the genre.
Sen: I don't agree with putting Dead Can Dance under "New Wave/Post-Punk".
Also, I'm gonna write a page about This Mortal Coil now.
Alucard: They used to be under the uncategorized, but I decided to toss them into NW/PP. I'm sorry but it's the closest thing we have for their weird music.
I'd like to note that most under their (utterly huge) list of genres are derivatives of post-punk: Darkwave, Gothic, Ethereal Wave etc.
It really is the best we have for them. If you like, we can stick them under the "Weird, uncategorizable" section that I might create (note the above section).
Xaris: Something I forgot to mention with the Japanese music category, Galneryus and Versailles are still under Metal, so its a bit uncoordinated to split some Japanese artists into their own section.
Sen: Neil Young isn't primarily folk, so he should go under "Rock".
Alucard: Most of the reasoning for some of these categorizations aren't justified in the article or here, but in the edit reason box. I'm going to post all the reasons mention since the categorization took place (because if I don't, it'll all be lost in the page history). If you have an argument with a group's placement, read here:
