Susan Davis: Didn't this page used to be Kansai Regional Dialect? When did it change?
Chrome Newfie: I was under the impression that Tina Foster was from Hakata, in Kyuushu. Did they change that in the anime?
Tyrfing: She was an American, and as such was born in America. XD She did however spend much of her life in Fukuoka (which is in Kyuushu).
Saiya Jedi: And Hakata is in Fukuoka.
Tyrfing: I'm pretty sure that it was noted (in the ADV liner notes) that the shop keeper in Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai had an 'Edo' accent (which is apparently different from a Tokyo accent).
Saiya Jedi: From memory, there's something called an "Edogawa" accent (unrelated to the the writer
or the detective), which has certain features that distinguish it from a more general Tokyo accent. The only aspect that sticks in my head at the moment, though, is the pronunciation of "shi" and "hi" being completely identical. (In other dialects, the H consonant in "hi" gets a bit fronted to sound like the "ch" in German ich, but not so much that you'll confuse it with "shi" if you're paying attention.) The stereotype associated with it is the Edokko: a Tokyo native born and bred, probably from an old family and most likely rich (or at least still making pretensions towards high social status). The last time I watched that series was before I actually understood Japanese spoken at full speed, however, so I couldn't really say what they were going for.
Qube: I thought southern Osaka sounded cute! It makes an already cuddly anime character even cuddlier.
