Working Title: Friedrich Nietzsche: From YKTTW

Inkblot "And This Troper also has considerable doubts that you know what his famous words "God Is Dead" actually mean." So what does it mean?

Freezair For A Limited Time: As I understand it (all my knowledge coming from my philosophy major best friend, understand), it roughly means that Christian ideals and morality are no longer capable of serving as the moral backbone for society, for various reasons. (Someone who's taken more that PLS 101 is free to come along and correct me on this.)

Koveras: Yup. Nietzsche actually laments the failing spirituality of (Western) people in the face of rapid technological progress of the late 19th century. Which is why "we killed God". On the other hand, he also points out the systemic deficiencies of Christian doctrine, which is unfit for the modern age, as he saw it. To counter that, he suggested the Übermensch doctrine, as opposed to "the Last Man", a hypocrite who hangs on to the old Christian doctrine without actually believing in or following it.

Wait... when exactly did some idea of Nietzsche as a stylist or mere writer instead of a philosopher come from? This troper has never seen it among philosophers or books/sources on philosophy in general, all of which talk about Nietzsche like any other philosopher.
