It's a pity the game is so flawed, since it has an excellent storyline moving it all. If the combat was better developed and if it was treated as the Gaiden Game it is rather than having the original cast shoehorned in (and in the case of Lloyd, derailed to fit the plot), then it could have been an RPG classic.
I really liked the original, but this game forced a lot of things that really slowed the action down. The Katz quests were tedious and the Mons never really paid off. Battling wasn't as fun or as sharp either. My biggest problems with the game also had to do with the mechanics, but they became so bothersome I wouldn't recommend buying the game.
First off, this is an escort title so it's obviously not going to be that good.
Second, it's a sequel so of course the dungeons and music are back. At least they bothered to have the dungeons in the state To S 1 left them though.
Aside from that, they really didn't have a choice in the voice actors. Union issues if I recall.
As a final note, IMO Free Run makes up for everything wrong in the battle system. Though I'm not to sure what you meant about the artes; they all combo together pretty well for me.
Free Run enables the lame stall tactic of simply running around to let the enemy pursue you.
nice review! but you there's a little error: Colette retained her original voice actor!
Agreed for the most part, although I like the mons. DEFINITELY wish you could level up and equip items on the main cast. And give Sheena back her summon spirits! Fun game overall, though.
Game would have been better if it was a standalone game rather than being shackled to the first.

Good, but Not Great
ToS:DotNW perked my interest as soon as I heard that it existed. I had played Tales Of Symphonia and had thought it to be the best game on the gamecube and one of the best RP Gs I'd ever played.
This game ended up being a little disappointing, but still, in the end being a good time. The visual effects were definitely better than the last game, the voice acting was good for the main characters (most of the time) it even had some Narm Charm which I love.
Now that that's out of the way let me Accentuate The Negative.
With all of that said, my problems with this game were mostly mechanical the plot was a little predictable but had one of the better reveals I've seen/read, characters were interesting, and the skits were incredibly entertaining.
This was a good game, but not a great one: 7/10 worth renting, maybe buying. 35 hours playtime for me.
