Epic Narm Charm

I've seen The Room three times already. The third time, I watched it with my dad, who kept remarking, multiple times during the film, "it's so bad," as if he just couldn't believe it.

But what we were both cracking up at later on was the quotes from the film we were reading online afterward, and the memories they brought back. While watching The Room, some of the dumb dialog just skips right by and sounds natural in context. But when you actually read what's being said, that's when it hits you hard just how dumb it really is.

There's tons of these little things. Denny is asked what he's buying drugs and he says, "I don't know, to make money!" Wait, you make money by buying drugs? Wow, sounds like a great get-rich-quick scheme. Why doesn't everyone do it then? So much dumb-in-hindsight dialog comes and goes that a lot of it only really becomes funny after you read it or watch it again.

Tommy's acting makes all his lines pure Narm. I actually felt his crying was believable, but everything else just doesn't work. "In a few minutes, bitch!" actually made the actors crack up, and I can see why. In fact, any anger coming from Johnny just doesn't really come off as convincing. His dropping of the F-bomb in an argument with his friend just doesn't work. Johnny seriously steals every scene he's in. When terrible acting comes from the main character, no matter what type of movie you're trying to make or how good the other actors are, you're going to get a comedy.

One thing I noticed though is that some of the actors aren't bad. I particularly liked the actress who played Lisa's elderly mother. Her acting came across to me as natural and well carried-out. It's not her fault that the words that actually come out of her mouth are so corny. My dad even had a favorite character whose acting and dialog he said never struck him as unnatural. I think it was Denny. A coworker liked Claudette.

The whole movie is just ridiculous. Narmy dialog delivered by actors both good (Claudette) and terrible (Johnny), a plot that can be summed up in one sentence ("A Mary Sue has a girlfriend who's cheating on him with his best friend"), and those infamous "love scenes" that go on forever (Yes, Lisa's very cute, but do we need to see both her and Johnny like that?). It has to be seen to be appreciated.

Hey, just because the lead is the worst actor doesn't mean he's a bad actor, in most cases, this movie being an obvious exception.

And wouldn't it just be "A Mary Sue has a girlfriend who's cheating on him with his best friend." really awesome and popular goes with the territory.

"Whoa" Keanu Reeves

Isn't Narm Charm when something succeeds despite the Narm? What you're decribing here is So Bad Its Good.

Sorry, pedant.

What's precedent ever done for us?

To be honest, I kinda liked the story and characters, simple as it was. I liked some of the characters, particularly Claudette. Even though Johnny's dialog and delivery were absurd, I liked him as a character. I enjoyed the movie unironically, not hugely, but I was able to like the simple story and characters, while simultaneously recognizing how bad it is and laughing at it.

I love this movie and play it whenever guests are over. Its the only movie that has me laughing all the way through. I have had more fun with it then most of the things I have on my shelf.

While you make pretty speeches, I'm being cut to shreds.

Claudette's actor isn't that bad, but it's hard to say because not even Patrick Stewart could wring a good performance out of this script.

I feel like this could have actually been a good, gripping story about human relations, but no one even TRIED to make it believable. In a better film, Lisa would be more sympathetically torn between loyalty and excitement and Johnny wouldn't be such a creepy whiner. And my dirty little secret is that if the latter were true I'd ship Johnny/Denny. Denny, as it stands, was the only member of that cast who WASN'T batfuck insane. I actually felt sorry for the kid, being surrounded by these idiot.

What makes the movie slightly more bearable is that the bad acting makes nearly everyone sound like a serial killer.

Regarding the "buying drugs to make money" issue, it's called speculation: buy (preferably low) and sell as high as you can (pun unintended). It's actually not that unusual for young dealers to get sucked in to the same trap as Denny, as the more senior dealers (such as Chris R) get them hooked on their stock and then give them some to deal on loan, making them choose between actually selling to finance said debt and using it. Usually, they wind caught up in debt to the actual dealer. As such, Denny's comment makes more sense than most of the movie (not that that's a great accomplishment).

I've literally never heard of this movie before today, when I saw the Rifftrax, and I have to say... this is the most ridiculous movie I've ever seen.

I'm not even kidding when I say that every single Star Wars movie is more realistic and believable than this.

Well, revisiting The Room later changed it from Narm Charm to just Narm. Now I find it hilarious, now that I can spot more things wrong with it.

I think he was either planning to sell them to someone else for a profit, or just lying to cover his ass.

Yeah, several people have pointed out how that aspect actually does make sense. I should consider rewriting part of the review.

Even Wiseau himself said the film makes more sense if you consider it a Black Comedy and Denny as a guy "issues"

But I don't think Wiseau was the worst of them, that person who played Lisa was incredibly dull and monotonous. Although I have to admit I thought only Hayden Christensen could do a combination of Dull Surprise and Large Ham,well Johnny just proved me wrong.

I think what makes this one hilarious is all the plots that get dropped in an eye bat.

Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter
