Literally has it all

Firefly has a bit of everything: Action, Drama, Suspense, Spectacle, Comedy, hell, even Horror. It's an amazing mish-mash of genres that works better than you'd expect. Trademarked by many of Whedon's signature characteristics - a well plotted Myth Arc, great backstory and an inherent silliness to the dialogue lines - it's the characters that make Firefly special. The plot lines have been seen before - The Super Soldier project, the Psychic Powers, the Evil Empire, the experiments gone wrong, the Accidental Hero, the Accidental Marriage, The "Dead In The Water" storyline, etc. Through it all, every bit of the story is completely character-driven, and it's the interaction between these interesting, diverse, deep and powerful characters that will get you hooked and leave you wanting for more.

The "Western in Space" thing is taken to extremes, though, especially in "Heart Of Gold"; its weakest episode IMO. One suspects that this aspect of the series might not age well; let's hope that's not the case, though.

The movie does a fantastic job of wrapping it up. I actually watched it first before the series, and though most of the references and characterization went right over my head at the time it got me interested enough that I gave the show a try. On rewatch, the film became a lot more awesome and was the perfect finale one could've asked for, given the circumstances.

I agree with the IMDB rating (which is something I almost never do) for this: 9.5 out of 10. It's that close to perfection.

Everything eh? Does it have a full season?

Sorry. The angel on my shoulder telling me not to ask that question was knocked out bu the devil on my other shoulder. There was nothing I could do.

Eh, Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star did it better, and first too. Not to knock Firefly, actually, lets knock Firefly, it wasn't a bad show, it wasn't, but it isn't the messiah of tv. It was slow paced, had to much filler, Mal was an asshole for to many episodes, nine characters is a lot to manage, and only three got any actual character development. Sure, these problems would probably been resolved if it had more seasons, but I'm not going to judge a show on what traits it might have had. The world building wasn't really original, and the weird sci fi elements stuck out a lot in the pretty realistic universe.

Nope; heh heh, it doesn't have a full season. And yeah, Phrederic, True on both accounts, although I disagree Cowboy Bebop did it better; but I think that's just a matter of opinion.

IMO, they should've gone in a less western and more sci-fi direction; avoided the more whiplashy elements of the two genres. Like I said, it was the show's weakest point. This was what struck me as some very bad Narm when I saw the movie first.

However, Edmondson's work just makes me see stars when I'm watching the show, somehow just....pushes away all the stuff I disagree with.

Tyler Durden is my bitch.

Let me get one thing clear. IT'S NOT A WESTERN! These memorable characters are on the wrong side of the law, making them pirates. Think about it, they sail on a "boat", and they try to rob institutions. Oh well. You're right, this show does have everything (you forgot to mention romance). And the "Heart of Gold" episode is a really good one. I disagree with you on the stereotypes though. One of the trademarks of Joss Wheden is that he never does anything expected. So logically, he wouldn't do anything stereotypical. Anyway, I mostly agree with you.

Ninjutsu is an art. It does not merely focus on fighting. My expertise centers around writing and the analyzation of a situation.

"One of the trademarks of joss Wheden is that he never does anything expected".

Apart from killing off charectors people love to the point that it's not shocking anymore, that is.

Ink Ninja, it is a western. That was specifically what Joss Whedon was going for when he made the show. I do not remember the exact quote, but it was most assuredly a space western. Unfortunately, while I enjoyed the idea, I agree that it was a little overdone to the point of being cowboys with LAZORZ (pew pew)... and they didn't even HAVE lazorz (pew pew).

That being said, it was still a decent show, but in the end it was not picked up so we will never really know what might have been.

I think for what there was (including the movie) it is a nice little show that has a lot of great characters and would make for a lot of good stories in well written fan fic or possible novelizations.

Great review. I agree on practically all of your points.

Besides being what Joss Whedon was going for, the characters match the old western characters.
