I've had this doubt ever since I started writing for the folders in the game, but so far, many users I've noticed have been very, and I mean very liberal in the use of the Ms. Fanservice and Nice Guy (or Girl) tropes. I'm beginning to think that we shouls start toning down the use and we should determine which characters truly qualify for the tropes.

  • Generally, we use Ms. Fanservice for characterrs who look (and sometimes act) the part, and yes, many of the Genshin femmes have fanservice to their names (MONA), but so far I've seen examples who don't really stand out compared to the rest (Keqing, for example). We could instead be writing them as downplayed examples, or simply put them in Fanservice Pack instead.
  • I also notice that yes, many of the characters in Genshin tend to be decent once you get to know them, but how many of these truly qualify for the Nice Guy trope? The definition of the trope, as discussed in a few forums, is that they're characters whose kindness is a defining trait. We should start either providing context about why these characters qualify for the trope, trimming the examples with lesser context, and start adding a few more examples of Jerkass (like with Dori before it got deleted), Jerk with a Heart of Gold (Diluc and Xiao) or Hidden Heart of Gold (Rosaria and Wanderer).

This is how I see it, but don't truly take my word for it. I just believe we should make less liberal and more conservative use of the tropes.

Could Genius Invokation have its own page since it's technically a spinoff? I don't know exactly what you would make the title, but I imagine it would be something like Genshin Impact: Genius Invokation TCG. What do you guys think?

Not as a spinoff, but a separate page just for tropes of that game I could see. If there's not that many tropes, it could even be on the main page.

Should we really be deleting tropes that used to be in the game at some point, but after some update they are no longer present? For example, there was an entry about Paimon first pronouncing "Childe" like "child" and later like "chill-day". The reason for this example's removal is that it has been fixed later, but does it matter? The trope does apply to some version of the game. Similarly with Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: before introducing Heizou, there was no male Catalyst users and before Gorou the only male archers were Venti, who is a trap, and Tartaglia, who mostly fights melee anyway. I think just because some element has been removed or changed doesn't mean we shouldn't keep information about it in the article.

Nah, I think mentioning that something changed in a certain version is important. It's part of the game's history. Also, for the love of all that is holy, never use the word "trap" in that way ever again; "Femboy" is more safe.

This might be the right place to ask, but in retrospect... I'm now curious why the Mythology Gag trope is being used for the pattern wherein "A character in Genshin Impact looks very much like, or has several similarities to a specific character from miHoYo's other game, Honkai Impact 3rd, sometimes complete with miHoYo intentionally hiring the same Chinese and Japanese voice actors to supplement these similarities."

Note that this trend has been observed, listed, and documented by fans of both games even in other sources aside from this TV Tropes wiki ever since Genshin was still new, it's just that there might be a better trope for this. Is it really Mythology Gag? Or would they all fit better under Expy and be moved to that trope instead?

I admit that I might've contributed to using Mythology Gag in listing some of the earliest examples of this trend when the Genshin pages on this site were still new, but now I think that it's probably not the perfect trope anymore after doing some observations. I'd like to ask for others' inputs before attempting to make massive changes or updates... especially because some of these characters already have both the Mythology Gag and Expy tropes in their folders, which IMO, seem redundant.

List of Character-specific Mythology Gag examples that might be affected

  • For example (and for easy access to their pages), the GI characters who fit this exact pattern (look-alike or similar appearance, several other similarities, and especially the same voice actors) are:
    • The Unknown God being compared to Kiana Kaslana, voiced by Dian Tao (Chinese), Rie Kugimiya (Japanese) - As a matter of fact, the page's edit history had the Mythology Gag example about this being deleted because another troper said it's a misuse of the MG trope
    • Yae Miko being compared to Yae Sakura, voiced by Du Mingya (Chinese), Ayane Sakura (Japanese) - Mythology Gag and Expy tropes are both already listed
    • Raiden Ei being compared to Raiden Mei, voiced by Juhuahua (Chinese), Miyuki Sawashiro (Japanese) - Mythology Gag and Expy tropes are both already listed
    • Nahida being compared to Theresa Apocalypse, voiced by Hua Ling (Chinese), Yukari Tamura (Japanese)

  • The GI characters who fit a portion of this pattern (look-alike or similar appearance, several other similarities, but not having both of the same VAs in JP and CN, or the VAs are not yet announced) are the following. Unlike the above examples who also have similar voice actors in both JP and CN to dispel doubts, these below need knowledge of both games to understand how or why they are expies.

The other reason why I'm bringing this up because other GI pages on this site, such as the main Video Game, WMG, YMMV, Fan Nickname, and Trivia pages use Expy instead of Mythology Gag when talking about this trend.

  • Medium Awareness: A NPC handing out a daily commision from the huge tree outside Monsdadt is a researcher who laments that she lacks a Vision, ie. the glowing gem thing that all of the playable characters have.
"It's like only those with a Vision are the main characters in this world."

Is this example true? Who's the exact NPC who said this line, and when/how can this line be triggered/read in-game? I would have wanted to correct the misspelled "Monsdadt" but I just wondered if the quote is actually in the game because the example doesn't tell who the NPC is.

I'm not sure about the policies for recap pages as a whole, but the previous recap page got cut because it was a stub with nothing but quotes from the Travail trailer. Quotes in and of themselves are not recap material.

^ If you plan on remaking the recap page, then don't leave just quotes and headers with no summaries and tropes and call it a day (otherwise, it'll be cut again for being a stub). Instead, put effort into summarizing what happened in each chapter.

As of now, the only viable chapters that can be summarized in the recap page are the Prologue: "The Outlander Who Caught the Wind", Chapter 1: "Farewell, Archaic Lord", and the first bit of Chapter 2: "Omnipresence Over Mortals". The later chapters will have to be left out for now because they're not out yet, so there's nothing that can be summarized with them. Per policy, anything that is either blank or a stub will be deleted.

First off I really want to apologize to Caccus for not bringing this to the discussion area sooner.

I think that Fantasy Counterpart Culture for Mondstadt is in a "Right for the Wrong Reasons" situation. I don't think it's intentionally supposed to be inspired by American culture and the examples listed in it are too general and can be attributed to many other cultures beyond just the United Statesnote . The phrasing was also a bit iffy in its Amerocentric nature and seemed somewhat emotional, but if I was wrong about that, then I apologize for that too.

The Genshin Impact community as a whole generally agrees that Mondstadt is a case of Medieval European Fantasy, but with a heavy emphasis on Germany. Proving that is, naturally, the name of the city, the name of some weapons and characters, the architecture, and the stand-in for the Cologne Cathedral among other examples. Old Mondstadt also seems to draw inspiration from the Holy Roman Empire, and the eventual revolution against Decarabian being similar to the Reformation by Martin Luther due to the removal of the Archon's political reign. There are other things based on other parts of Western Europe as well.

Any thoughts on this?

What does it mean when "This Article is checked out until 06:56 by <troper>"? My edits seem to not take place...

I assume that you're new to TV Tropes, but "This Article is checked out until 06:56 by <troper>" means that somebody else is editing the page. There's a 20-minute edit lock to prevent others from editing the page while someone is busy with it... so wait at least until they're done (or if they go back to the previous page without making edits anyway, it's also common).

Sometimes, edits don't get saved when you're taking too long to edit a page on this website (past the 20-minute edit lock). When the Edit page says "Lock has expired", other tropers might accidentally overwrite your edits if you don't publish fast enough. I had that happen to some of my edits before. It's better to retry and edit the page again if that happens, there's no easy way to recover lost edits.

BTW, it's nice to have a new editor for Genshin in this site, and thanks for adding stuff and correcting grammar issues that we may have overlooked. However, I noticed that you've been deleting a lot of tropes here lately. Although I admit that some of those deletions were valid (e.g. the character-specific tropes go to character folders), It's a kind gesture to provide explanations/Edit Reasons when we're deleting tropes (preferrably one reason for each deleted example). It's possible that they might get contested if there's no Edit Reason.

For example, I would like to ask why you deleted these tropes... Because I personally added most of them and think that they apply... Yet they were deleted without specific Edit Reasons.

  • Party in My Pocket: Though you can only have one character active at a time, you can instantly switch (with a very brief delay between swaps, about one second) between the 4 in your party, replacing the active one at the same exact location. Frequent tag-teaming is essential for efficient combat, since it lets you do elemental combos, drop attacking familiars with one character while tanking with another, pull out a healer when the lead fighters are taking too much damage, etc.
  • Punctuation Shaker: Khaenri'ah is the region in Teyvat where Kaeya originates from.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming:
    • In the Mondstadt market district, there's an NPC named Nimrod.
    • Rhodeia of Loch, the Oceanid, takes its namesake from the Oceanids of the Classical Mythology.
  • Trailers Always Spoil:
    • The "Teyvat Chapter Preview: Travail" contains narrations by Dainsleif, somehow summarizing even the Acts or Chapters that are yet to be added in Genshin Impact. More specifically, he is describing the Archons and their respective relationships with their regions.
  • Gratuitous French:
    • One of the seven nations in Teyvat is called "Fontaine", which is the French word for "fountain".
    • There's an Artifact Set labeled "Noblesse Oblige", from a French phrase that means "nobility obliges".
  • Gratuitous German:
    • The first city that you visit is named Mondstadt, which means "moon city" in German.
    • The boss of the Wangshu Inn is named "Verr Goldet". In German, "vergoldet" means "gold-plated".
  • Gratuitous Latin:
    • The names of the in-universe Constellations are usually in Latin, such as Qiqi's Pristina Nola ("The Ancient Bell"), Keqing's Trulla Cementarii ("Stonemasons' Small Ladle"), Diona's Feles ("Cat"), etc.
    • Diluc and his father Crepus are respectively named after the Latin words diluculum ("dawn") and crepusculum ("twilight").
  • Autosave: Auto Save is the only save. There is no manual save/load menu: you can only quit the game when you have finished a session, and continue when you log on again. The game doesn't even tell you when it is auto saving.

I think I'll be moving this to another trope if you don't mind, another troper added it and it looks like it's just misplaced:

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: The Waypoints that can be unlocked to fast-travel around Teyvat aren't just random abstract statues: they're Vajras, important symbols in both Buddhism and Hinduism.

Can't say much for some of the deleted tropes (such as Bleached Underpants and Buffy Speak) though, I wasn't the one who added those.

Sorry for not notifying beforehand. I'm afraid that I'll end up writing a lot in the edit reason entry, so I'm fine typing them here

  • @ Party in My Pocket: I thought Tag Team already overlaps with and mentions this, so this one is redundant
  • @ Punctuation Shaker: "Khaenri'ah" doesn't seem like it twists the pronunciation too much?
  • @ Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: (back when I edited it, I mentioned this in the edit reason, but the edit didn't take place, so...) this trope isn't just for whenever someone is named after myth figures - it has to follow a theme, thus it has to involve more than 1 character
  • @ Trailers Always Spoil: The "Travail" video is explicitly a preview. Is it too much to be "spoiling"?
  • @ Gratuitous tropes: Those that I deleted sound like misuses; they don't sound "gratuitous" enough in context (i.e if Mondstadt is supposed to be European and particularly German-ish country, then it's not "gratuitous" to name it in German, right?)
  • @ Autosave: It's an online game, it saves automatically by default like any other online games, so it's not worth mentioning
  • @ Waypoints: are they really supposed to be Vajras? They don't look that way to me
  • @ Bleached Underpants: It's too big of a stretch; the previous game (Honkai Impact) isn't really a "lewd" game and Mihoyo has never done any "risque" stuff before
  • @ Buffy Speak: "doneness" is a real word

Perhaps next time I could just link to a discussion page post if my edit reason gets too long?

DanteVin Since: Jul, 2016

Sorry for the late reply too (I haven't been that active on this site last week). I mean, in retrospect, you have valid edit reasons so I'm fine with them now, and I just realized that perhaps I had misunderstood certain tropes.

Do note that some of the examples might have been copy-pasted on the character-specific folders... And it's usually the case where if the trope doesn't actually apply and gets deleted in the main page, the character folders might need to be double-checked to see if the tropes still apply to them or not.

Excuse me, I have some problem with this:

"You play as the "Traveler", one of two dimension-hopping siblings who traveled to Teyvat on a whim, only to find yourselves in the middle of the apocalyptic Archon War. When you attempted to leave, an unknown god stripped you of your powers and spirited away your sibling, then dumped you back onto Teyvat. Many thousands of years later, you awaken from a deep slumber to find a world at peace, and your sibling nowhere to be found."

Where exactly was it stated about when the 2 travelers come to Teyvat and how much time has passed? The intro alone doesn't say anything about it so I fear this is a slight spoiler.

That is, I'm going to rewrite this to follow what is shown in the intro and not what is shown later on.

Originally, the synopsis of the game was directly copy-pasted from the official website, here.

You have arrived in Teyvat — a fantasy world where the seven elements flow and converge. In the distant past, the Archons granted mortals unique elemental abilities. With the help of such powers, people formed a bountiful homeland out of the wilderness. However, 500 years ago, the collapse of an ancient civilization turned the universe upside down... Though the calamity the world suffered has ceased, peace has yet to be restored.

However, TV Tropes has some sort of policy that frowns upon directly copy-pasting character paragraphs/summaries/synopsis from other sources, so they had to be rewritten here. I already paraphrased that synopsis from the official website weeks ago, but IIRC, several other tropers also edited it or added some context. I assume they added stuff from the Traveler's Story 1 entry.

I never had time to double-check the old edits and correct them, and yeah, that "thousands of years" later appears to be dubious since the playable Traveler cannot recall how many years passed since they met the Unknown God. Feel free to write a new synopsis though.
