"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWould Yandere Simulator count as vaporware? It has been in development for almost 7 years, and all that has been actually implemented is an alpha build of 10% of the game of dubious quality.
There's so much I wish I could take back.Should the Neon FM example be moved to What Could Have Been or something? The game is out and has been for years, and the example is more about what the game originally was.
anyway, here's wonderwallThis page seems to have lots of examples of cancelled games, which aren't supposed to count. I was going to pull the Fez example, until I noticed the one above it was cancelled as well.
So what's happening? If it was Vaporware and the cancelled does it still count? What's the point of Canceled Video Games then? Wouldn't most games be Vaporware before they were cancelled?
Edited by CamelCase ME!? You want ME to be the director of your Christmas play?! Hide / Show RepliesI'm pretty sure this is a the same as Canceled Video Games, the difference is that is an Index, this is a trivia items. We've got:
- Development Hell for works that have been in development for a long time, but have no release date. This can lead to either...
- Vapor Ware and Canceled Video Games for explicitly canceled games
- Saved from Development Hell for works that do see release.
I was on my way to Rock Band to add What Could Have Been regarding Rock Band: Japan, only to see it was also listed as Vaporware. I removed the Vaporware bit since the game was explicitly cancelled - I even provided one reason as to why in my addition to the page - but I find it, among many other long delayed but cancelled projects, is also listed here.
Personally, I think Vaporware only applies when something is never actually cancelled. Vaporware can be namechecked wherever the project is said to have been cancelled after a long time of being vaporware, but I feel listing an entry here should only apply for as long as the entry itself is still not explicitly cancelled.
I'll refrain from making any further alterations until a consensus has been achieved.
Some of these "examples" are of games that have been released. Rather than associate them with the term, which is somewhat pejorative, they should be deleted entirely.
Instead of doing so right away, I'll move them to a bottom section of games once considered vaporware. If someone else would like to delete them from there, please go ahead.
Hide / Show RepliesActually half the page seems to be of content that has been released. If you can buy it, stick it in a machine, and play it, it's not and never was vaporware. It just had a long and delayed development. These games should be praised for having been released and do not deserve to be associated with the neglected and forgotten, and worse, the frauds.
Edited by 69.172.221.2Wouldn't those games belong in Saved from Development Hell? Seems a little redundant to list them both here and there.
This should not have non-videogame examples. They go under Development Hell.
Edited by WascallyWabbit Hide / Show RepliesThere's a slight problem with that. As written, Development Hell is specifically for films, while this is specifically for software. Without a rewrite, others have no particular choice other than being shoved into one or the other, where they don't fit. Either one or the other should be rewritten to allow more options, or a third catch-all for the remainder is needed.
"That's ridiculous. What would a walrus do with a magic bag?" PokeamidaThen why not merge them? What's even the point of having two separate pages?
^Put them through Trope Repair Shop.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI second a merger or a partial one according to rules if a game is released it doesn't belong here but where? I imagine Saved from Development Hell, but if development hell is film only than why do we have everything else there that isn't film. Why does video games need a separate category if this trope is essentially the same thing I suggest we get rid of vaporware movie any games that have been released into Saved from Development Hell and any still unreleased into development hell If we are going to keep this should we reserve this specifically for canceled games only and any games considered still in development or any on any kind of hold (Starcraft Ghost?) should be put into Development Hell. So my proposal is:
- Released = Saved from Development Hell,
- In development or on any kind of hold = Development Hell
- Canceled = Vaporware.
Duke Nukem Forever has gone gold.

I demand that we put up a Final Fantasy Versus XIII image in place of Duke post haste.
My Xbox Live gamertag/PSN ID is tifosiotaku. See you online! Hide / Show RepliesThe game is out in Europe. US gets it on the 14th. Where's the Final Fantasy Versus XIII image?
My Xbox Live gamertag/PSN ID is tifosiotaku. See you online!DNF was released, so it's not vaporware.
Also Final Fantasy Versus XIII was renamed Final Fantasy XV.
Might we consider replacing the image with a mock up Half Life 2: Episode Three/Half Life 3 macro? It's gotta be the reigning champ now :P
Hide / Show RepliesNope, that would be StarCraft: Ghost, which started development back in '02 and was never finished. At this point they'd probably have to redo the graphics from scratch if they wanted to put it out.
Edited by 216.99.32.45With Duke Nukem Forever finally coming out next year, I say we replace this trope's image with one from Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
My Xbox Live gamertag/PSN ID is tifosiotaku. See you online! Hide / Show RepliesNot a chance. Until the game is actually for sale, on either Amazon or store shelves, it should still be considered vaporware. The development team has made promises like "it'll be ready next year" and so forth before.
But what if it releases for sale as a direct-download only title, and thus is not available as either? Or were you planning for just that eventuality to allow it to still be considered vaporware after releasing?
"That's ridiculous. What would a walrus do with a magic bag?" PokeamidaDuke Nukem Forever finally has a release date.

If it's out on May 3rd, and the trope image isn't Final Fantasy Versus XIII, I'm going to change it myself.
