I really don't know much at all about Japanese history at all, but how can Seven Samurai and its anime counterpart Samurai7 be listed in different historical periods?

Also, I've started watching the latter, and while I know a lot of these series aren't that historically accurate, I wonder if it really counts for any historical period (it has fantasy animals and advanced cyborgs).
