Super Mario RPG is interesting in that this Trope applies mostly, but the intended hindrance can be removed by having a Map screen so the player can always just go back to Mario's Pad and sleep on his own bed for free.

A good way to avert this would be to simply have it be part of the story that inflation is going on and so prices go up everywhere as key plot developments happen. Can also avert the Karl Marx one so that you can later sell for more money what you bought cheap early one.

Tropes are not bad?

I got my political views from reddit and that's bad

Can anybody understand the first post in Tabletop Games about 3rd edition D&D? I'm not sure if it's a valid sample of the trope, because I can't understand what it's saying - aside from They Changed It, Now It Sucks!.

Isn't this justified by not wanting to make the difficulty of the beginning of the game higher than what the characters skills and possessions consist of?

Cut this:

* Baldur's Gate II. Why does a hotel in a podunk drow outpost cost 10 times as much as a room in the in-game world's equivalent to New York?
** Because Drow are total assholes?
Because it's not really a valid example. The inn in the Drow city is expensive because its only rooms are of royal status. Most inns have four options when it comes to accommodations: peasant, merchant, noble, and royal. The higher the status, the higher the price, but also the greater the benefits of resting there when it comes to hit-point recovery. The Drow inn only has royal accommodations, but its royal rooms are no pricier than royal rooms elsewhere. Also, the Drow city in question is hardly a "podunk...outpost" but rather a city of major importance, although it is not as large as Menzoberranzan or Ched Nassad.

Tickled pink that this trope (written in a fit of pique at trying to afford endgame gear in Anarchy Online, combined with the ludicrous prices found for some things at the time I wrote this entry), is very successful despite some people being annoyed at spin-offs (I recall someone, forget who, being very annoyed at the "xyz Hates Your Guts" trend that came about after this trope got moving!) rename attempts, and so on.

I'm actually pretty pleased with the "Playing With" section, where it's codified nicely, given excellent examples on how to play with it, and so on. What started out as a moment of deep spite has turned into an identified trope, and one most if not all gamers can seriously identify with!

For this I have all you tropers to thank, honestly. Every player spited by the 'economy' of the game they're playing who took a moment from their annoyance, rage, etc. and plunked down a few words here have helped out a lot (and probably helped give us fair warning, as well!) and for that you've got my thanks!

No Hero Discount has been launched, so this page has been split. But we still need to decide whether or not to rename it.

Doesn't sound like it, this last page was a year old almost to the day.
