Removed from main page, as there is a cleanup effort on one of the pages linked here underway and I am not sure what to do with this entry:

  • The Jester: Kefka's overall appearance is similar to that of a Tyrolean Jester, and similar to the trope, it also led to him not being suspected of being as much of a threat until it was far too late.

The long-debunked claim that Shadow's "Interceptor" status in battle will be passed onto Relm if he dies on the Floating Continent keeps finding its way back into the page here. This never happens. There is no code in the game to support it.It's a rumor that has existed since the dawn of the internet.

My Name Is Not Durwood is no longer a trope. Please readd under a more appropriate trope.

I caused a brief argument in Protagonist Power Up (which is currently in YKTTW status), when I pointed out that Terra isn't The Hero. She may be the most important PC, but even if so, that doesn't mean she's The Hero - that's a very specific trope, and Terra doesn't even begin to approach that. Contrast against FF 7's Cloud, FF 8's Squall, or FF 9's Zidane, all of whom fit The Hero trope fairly closely. By team tropes, going on her personality and party role, she much more closely fits The Chick (which is not to say that the two are mutually exclusive).

Frankly, I don't think that FF 6 has someone filling the Hero role. However, if one were to insist that there has to be a Hero, I'd say that both Locke and Edgar have significant aspects of The Hero.

"A character who chose to do evil, and have/had abilities and obstacles similar to the protagonist's." It is the Evil Counterpart's first paragraph.

How does this invalidate the idea that Kefka is an Evil Counterpart to Terra as well? The idea was explained fairly well and I don't see the conflict.

The example not explains their similarities, only their opposition and differences. Evil Counterpart's first paragraph notes their similarities and the two following paragraphs follow the same trend: "Frequently, the Evil Counterpart is the character equivalent of For Want Of A Nail: he represents what our hero could have become as a result of a very small change in his backstory. They also save creators the trouble of thinking up new abilities to give their villains, especially for comic book heroes and video games (where new abilities have to be implemented)." "Often leads to a Not So Different moment." In other words, no part of the description implies Evil Counterpart is more opposite than the similarly-named Distaff Counterpart.

In that case I'll reword the description. I maintain that Kefka is still Terra's evil counterpart. Terra has to learn to control her power, Kefka goes nuts with his. Terra has no understanding of love and hope to the world at first but develops them over the game, Kefka uses his lack of understanding to justify destroying them. IMO, Kefka is the type of person Terra may have become if she had given into her power and not developed her emotional capacity.

I hope no one minds if I rearrange the list to the canonical ordering of the characters: Terra, Locke, Cyan, Shadow, Edgar, Sabin, Celes, Stragos, Relm, Setzer, Mog, Gau, Gogo, Umaro. It's not the order they're introduced in, nor their (idiosyncratic) order in the closing credits, but just a canonical sorting algorithm of their character listings.

Lets change it back. The new order looks somewhat random.

I like the canonical order better. The main characters are still at the front, and the others are better sorted as regards their narrative devices and story roles.

See you in the discussion pages.

Does it count as alternate character interpretation if Setzer and Edgar were changed to match the Japanese version better?

Shadow's an assasin. Of course he's evil. Heck, he even states to one of the heroes that they should not worry about him as he wasn't hired to kill them.

Yes, but he joins the heroes and fights alongside them as long as they pay his fee. He's a Neutral, he doesn't care who's good or evil as long as the price is right.

Fine we can perhaps argue he turned true neutral due to apathy. But joining the good guys just means that he is not the villain, but caring about doing evil for it's own sake is not an requirement to be NE.

Shadow is not evil. He's explicitly stated to work for money, regardless of the contract, but he violates this "rule" at every turn in favor of working for good. And even then, he joined Sabin and Cyan out of his own volition, despite receiving payment from neither, when he could have sold them out to the deep-pocketed Empire at the camp. "Turned neutral due to apathy"? That's not what apathy means.

As for "He's an assassin, of course he's evil," you're forgetting that "Assassin" in Final Fantasy simply means a Job Class, and you can have heroic assassins in your party in a multitude of games.

This is Final Fantasy, not Dungeons And Dragons. Being an assassin doesn't automatically make you evil.

See, this is why I say you shouldn't bother with the Character Alignment listings unless the work explicitly uses it. It just leads to arguments about what alignment a character not designed for a system that uses that alignment is.

THANK YOU. The Character Alignment sheets have been applied everywhere indiscriminately, even in comedy shows and cartoons where they really don't belong. Even in Final Fantasy games where a case could be made, they tend to produce exactly this sort of argument and back-and-forth editing.

Oh, so wait "Assassin" is a job class and apathy doesn't mean what I think it does? My mistake.
