Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
This needs a link to a reliable source that mentions that people see something as offensive. The Compendium link not mentions that someone see the Aperusa as offensive.
Citation means exactly what it sounds like; the idea is to prove the example is an actual criticized issue and not just one individual troper complaining about a personal soapbox. If there's a dozen articles out there - and I think I've actually heard of this myself, so I'd assume there are - just link one or more and the first entry should be fine.
(Dunno what to do about the second one, though - that sounds horribly cringeworthy but Spelljammer is a pretty forgotten setting, so there's probably not that much analysis of it out there of any kind).
So, for citations... Here's one blog-poster talking extensively about the racial connotations of the Man-Ape: https://geeksofcolor.co/2017/06/12/the-imagery-of-marvels-man-ape/
Here's one of many news articles noting that the MCU changed M'Baku due to his racist connotations: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/black-panther-marvel-release-date-trailer-mbaku-man-ape-racist-stereotype-name-change-a7840771.html
As for the Vistania, Aperusa and Varisians... do any of these count as citations? https://your-dungeon-is-problematic.tumblr.com/ http://veekyforums.com/thread/52718924/games/osrg-osr-general.html https://www.reddit.com/r/Pathjammer/comments/1v6hih/what_to_do_with_aperusa/ http://tgdmb.niftymessageboard.com/viewtopic.php?t=56582&view=previous http://www.tgdmb.com/viewtopic.php?p=401326 https://gomakemeasandwich.wordpress.com/2016/09/28/curse-of-strahd-correctly-labels-strahd-an-abuser-yet-troublingly-racist/ https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?783774-Fixing-the-fictional-Rom-How-to-deal-with-Gur-Vistani-stereotypes-in-D-amp-D-roleplaying/page7 https://thewordofstelios.com/2016/10/09/ravenloft-racist-sexist-or-just-bad-horror-part-1/ http://injusticegamer.blogspot.com.au/2016/10/and-now-for-my-gallagher-impersonation.html https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?637500-So-Golarion-seems-kinda-racist http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2tvu1?If-calling-Varisians-Gypsies-racist-then
Oh, I wanted to ask; in issue #25 of the original run of Thunderbolts, when the T-bolts ambush and steal the costumes of five members of the Masters of Evil, African-American Charcoal complains "Sure, sure, go ahead. Put the black kid in the monkey costume. That's reallll PC." Would this count as a Lampshade Hanging on M'Baku's racial controversy?
The second bullet entry violates Example Indentation.
135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300Once you get the citations sorted out, you submit the edit request to the Locked Pages thread, in the FAQ forum. Write it up exactly as you want it posted, including formatting; the mods can open the post to capture everything.
Whether a blog counts as a good source for a citation depends on how long running it is and the reputation it has. Otherwise, it comes across as just one person's gripe, rather then a representation that a lot of people would see the examples as UL.
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry Pratchett@Candi: That's not necessary, none of the pages WanderingBowser wants to edit are locked. Right now, anyone can edit the Unfortunate Implications page and said works YMMV pages.
We've kind of had this discussion before.
I think the community decided stuff like Tumblr and forum posts aren't really citable sources for this trope and you need to have at least a couple write-ups from more reputable sources with some level of cred in discussing the medium.
Edited by shoboni^^Argh! Not at you. It's been hard to keep track of some of this stuff.
Hopefully I'll be better at it -and more involved- now that I'm on a new contract with a net provider that doesn't have a data cap.
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettThat's going to be problematic; most D&D fans agree that the Vistani and Aperusa are some really nasty Unfortunate Implications, but neither TSR nor Wizards of the Coast have ever issued a formal apology for them, so it's impossible to point out on the pages, then. But thanks, I can at least add the note about M'Baku.
Find stuff from popular news sites like Kotaku, etc.
There's gotta be some publication that reviews tabletop games?? Or Dnd?

So, there are two entries I want to make to the Unfortunate Implications page.
The first is a Tabletop Games entry, referring to the Vistani of Ravenloft and the Aperusa of Spelljammer, both of whom are based on gypsy stereotypes, with the Aperusa in particular being particularly negative/offensive in their portrayal. The second is a Comic Books entry about Black Panther, specifically pointing out that M'Baku the Man-Ape has come under fire since the late 1990s because of his unfortunate resemblance to the "African people as apes/monkeys". If you search "M'baku racist" on Google, you will hit a dozen articles reporting that the character was stripped of his original comic books name & costume because it was deemed too racist.
Both times, I have been denied due to "lack of citation". What do I actually need to say to prove my point?
For comparison, these are the entries as I have written them so far:
