Yeah, that reads like a personal disagreement rather than a valid removal reason. If a decent amount of people are hyping Rex up because of the stated reason in the entry, then it's valid as anything else.

I restored it and sent a notifier, although if you saying they have a tendency to do that is true, then I don't see that being much help.

We do indeed try to avoid troping political opinions from the extreme right and extreme left, to the point of keeping a page to monitor works that we think will or already do attract such edits.

Regarding this example, one of the issues is that the Gigachad Rex meme is, at the very least perceived as by significant portions of the fanbase to be particularly popular with a subset of the fandom who are associated with rightwing social views, such as transphobia, homophobia, and misogyny, to the point of essentially being seen as a dogwhistle for it. The same way that we would typically delete entries for Xenoblade Chronicles X criticizing the NA version's removal of certain skimpy swimsuits from Lin would likely be removed from that page on suspicion of it coming from fringe parts of the fanbase who are lolicons, or that entries for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 accusing the designs of being WTH, Costuming Department? for being less Stripperiffic than 2's.

Perhaps I jumped the gun, and perhaps the notion that "Gigachad Rex fans are all incels" is at least partially rooted in stereotyping. But I do follow a lot of LGBTQ and left-leaning Xenoblade fans and can confirm from their posts and discussions with them that the term is something that spurs a lot of arguments and carries a lot of baggage, to the point of spurring waves of counter-memes attempting to negate the meme's more unsavory fixation with his supposed sexual domination of multiple women by instead focusing on other kinds of positive traits like his kindness and strength. No idea how successful it's been, but they are trying as a result of this perception.

The other big issue, and I'll accept fault for having a brainfart and neglecting to mention it at the time, was that the entry as written was basically a stealth example of gushing about him being a Memetic Sex God. That's a huge can of worms and a trope we nuked years ago for being a magnet for all kinds of trouble, not the least of which was that it pulled in a lot of Ecchi and lolicon/shotacon gushing which is blatantly against site rules. Which is why I suggested moving a revised version of the trope to the Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed page instead, because any discussion of his reception in the base game of 3 would necessarily revolve around something that is now banned.

Regarding the other disputed edit you alluded to, I already explained in the Discussion page what the exact issue was, albeit perhaps less clearly than I should've.

It wasn't about personal disagreement with the example or the idea it conveyed, it was about it being listed under the wrong Audience Reaction (Hype Backlash) when the concept described fit a different one (Contested Sequel) better in its full context.

Hype Backlash typically describes when the fandom undergoes a broad global shift in opinion with time, and generally places less focus on the concept of differential subfandoms. In my experience, both positive and negative reactions to Future Redeemed have always been demographically tribal in nature, divided based on initial wants going into the Xenoblade 3 duology. Thus, the increase in negativity was less a result of people who originally liked the game changing their minds once the honeymoon period ended, but rather that the group who was already inclined to take issue with the DLC (and for perfectly valid reasons, I won't dispute their opinion) now feel more comfortable with expressing their thoughts frankly. I never doubted the existence of the Audience Reaction, just felt it was miscategorized, and my apologies if I wasn't clear enough about it.

You can feel anything about how a character is perceived, but that doesn't give you the right to determine which opinions are "correct". I'm not a big fan of those kind of memes either because of how they mischaracterise Rex, but they are an audience reaction.

If it veered too close to Memetic Sex God, you could have rephrased the trope instead of outright deleting it and conjuring a rule out of thin air. I'm glad you acknowledge it, and hope you will bear that in mind in the future.

I mean, I wouldn't say it's a rule conjured out of thin air. We do indeed regularly discuss (or at least we used to, prior to the whole incident with Kory) the removal of entries that we suspect represent beliefs from the political right or otherwise bigoted sides of the fandom on the left-hand cleanup threads, even popular ones, and it's why pages like Captain Marvel (2019) often get heavily monitored with most new entries looked over to avoid such a thing.

But yeah, I probably should've taken it to one of them first so I could have a citation ready beforehand, even if I did expect to get the clear.

And as I mentioned in the edit reason, "wrong game" was also a big part of it. Once you delete the parts that are just Memetic Sex God in a different coat of paint (because we voted to stop allowing examples of it anymore for being a walking etiquette violation minefield), everything that's left really belongs on the Future Redeemed page, not this one.

the gigachad meme tends to be pushed most heavily by incel-types these days. We try to avoid troping that side of fandom reactions because it quickly takes a turn for the etiquette-violating.
The latter isn't true as far as I'm aware, and I'm skeptical the former is.

  • Memetic Badass: Rex had this based on his appearance in the ending photo alone, with many people complimenting his Kid Hero All Grown-Up design and claiming that his polycule relationship with three beautiful wives added to his "gigachad" prowess. Come Future Redeemed and this version of Rex appears in the flesh, living up (or even exceeding) everyone's expectations.

I don't sense a political commentary or complaining here.

It is, however, not Memetic Badass, which is specifically a combat trope. I'd agree removing it for this reason, and Memes.Xenoblade Chronicles 3 describes the same thing more accurately.

To be clear, we actually don't remove entries solely for their politics. Many political entries are garbage for other reasons as well (character bias or slander, misunderstanding messages, clear attempts at pushing an agenda, etc) which allows us to remove them... but we never had any sort of rule that allows us to remove political entries for being political. Memes in particular are often protected because, regardless of taste, a meme is a meme and we don't actually like to pretend all fandoms are wholesome and agreeable

So I discussed with the editor who originally added the entry in P Ms, and we agreed that the entry should be deleted and rewritten in a more compliant format on the Future Redeemed page where it better belongs.

Edit: Nevermind, Future Redeemed already has an entry for that anyway.
