In regards to Contested Sequel, the Zelda series suffered from what is known as the Zelda Cycle where the newly released game would be hated by the Zelda fanbase while the previous Zelda game becomes loved by the same fanbase (the previous game was originally hated by the fanbase when it was the latest Zelda at the time).

The Zelda developers at Nintendo became aware of this cycle after some time since the cycle began with Majora's Mask. Of course there are exceptions to the cycle rule. Breath of the Wild received widespread acclaim even from the Zelda fanbase itself, but people are waiting to see how the sequel to Breath of the Wild will go.

Yeah Zelda is one of these fanbases where you can argue that most games are Contested Sequel of sorts... And given that we document fan and audience reaction, the entry would still count, particularly because the debates of Zelda's overall quality still rage to this day.

The entry was originally added in February 2011, but its current form dates from April last year, ironically by the same troper who added the original form of the entry in 2011. The troper is Waxing Name, who got in trouble several years ago for repeatedly arguing in the forums that the Zelda series was in a Dork Age (today Audience-Alienating Era) despite being asked by many people including myself to drop the claims (which often came off as incendiary and tone-deaf). The bit about the TP-to-SS being "the most divisive" entries are likely a remnant or euphemism to claim that, yes, those games were a dork age for the series.

Yeah, the Zelda fanbase is infamous for never agreeing which games are better. You could pick one at random and 90% of the time people will claim it's the best game, the worst game, or an underrated gem that's unfairly hated, all at the same time and with equal vigor.

The only exception is that everyone agrees that The Legend Of Zelda C Di Games are only worth playing for the memes.

Is it really okay to deleted Contested Sequel from the page? Its argument is covered in Hype Backlash with this:

"This seems to be a driving factor behind the fan-defined "Zelda Cycle", where a game that was once universally acclaimed and considered the best game in the series suddenly falls out of favor and is deemed "overrated", while a game that was once criticized takes its place and is Vindicated by History. Breath of the Wild broke this cycle and caused a metastasis of sorts where it, Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past are seen as the most revolutionary and important games in the series, and all other games are contested sequels."

^^ They were forum-banned, but I haven't seen any indication they've been banned from editing yet.

In any case, yeah it's best to delete it. Zelda's clearly been a cyclical series without a consistent Audience-Alienating Era.

^They're not banned from editing, but they are banned from PMs in addition to posting, so I'm not sure if there'd be an easy way to summon them here.

And yeah, I agree with deleting it, especially due to the Zelda Cycle being a thing, and the fact that the Zelda Cycle is directly covered by a Hype Backlash entry.

Edited by GastonRabbit Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.
