I'm not voting because the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is an inherently plebeian institution...

That was a rhetorical question. I doubt the suits who decide this stuff would let such a controversial (in their day) Gangsta Rap group, regardless of how influential they were to rap, into the Hall of Fame.

"Plebeian" is sort of akin to "commoner."

Which means I'm as dumbfounded as you are.

I know what it means, I'm just not sure how it applies.

The way I see it, they've already inducted so many rap groups that at this point they may as well induct one of the most important ones in history.

But seriously, Deep Purple's absence is just awful.

Personally, I dislike Kate Bush's absence the most.

This year's picks are pretty disappointing. I'm not really that excited about any of them, so I voted for the ones that from what I can gather had the most impact/influence.

Sting solo is the one that mystifies me the most. I knew he had hits but I didn't think they were of any musical or cultural importance. Joan Jett is the one I'm most torn on (though I voted for her), because while her image, persona and delivery were all important the actual music behind that persona was kind of unremarkable.

Green Day should probably get in eventually, but they can wait a few years. They should at least wait until 25 years after Tre Cool joined. It's the Nirvana situation again because they are eligible due to a release with their original drummer even though the Hall probably won't induct that drummer.

To me the most important acts overlooked by the Hall are Deep Purple, Yes, King Crimson, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.

Honestly I don't think Green Day's done anything worthy of the Hall of Fame.

I was just using it as a sort of general pejorative to be honest...

I hope I'm not the only one who sees this hall of fame as a colossally pointless waste of time and space.

I think "consumerist" would be a better word than "plebeian".

"Hey, let's provide recognition to all these artists that are already super rich and famous!

Nope, you're certainly not the only one, hence my calling of it plebeian earlier. (Which seems to have turned out to be the wrong insult)

99% of this list is either people I don't listen or people I didn't even know had albums out this year.

Did someone say Chic? Because I think I heard someone say Chic.

Anyway, I'm really digging Rival Sons right now, but does anyone know if they have any fast songs? Y'know, something like this or this or this.

I have like three/four albums on that list and they are pretty much the only ones I'm even interested in, with the possible exception of Jessie Ware's Tough Love and a few ones that haven't been released yet (still waiting on Azealia Banks).

I wonder to whom this kind of list is aimed at. I mean it's a "list of albums" but that's really really vague, there doesn't seem to be any kind of determining factor for being on the list and it's most certainly not a list of everything that's been released this year (the only album on there that's bound to be in my top 10 year-end list is St. Vincent's). What's the use then ? It's pretty much just a list of albums that have got sufficient press coverage for whoever is feeding the list to notice and put them on the list, which is not going to benefit either anyone looking for new music they may not have heard of (since pretty much all of these albums have already received enough attention to even be on the list) or people looking for a comprehensive list of every album release of the year...

Once again, I'm pondering what exactly is the use of wikipedia when it comes to anything culturally-based.

Try Get What's Coming. It has a bit of an edge to it, and Jay Buchanan's voice is slightly rougher than usual.

Radio is reasonably fast too. Actually, just try their first EP in general; it's a little rawer the albums.

I was more referring to the fact that I have no idea what came out this year and all of my favorite albums in recent memory were from 2013.

Well each one makes of it what one will. I find it interesting as well but honestly if you haven't heard most of what's there I don't think you're missing much anyways. Mostly "adult contemporary" and mainstream crap.
