Good news about SMT IV then. Also, for those who played Soul Hackers (3DS version), is it any good and worth looking into getting sometime soon?

its...alright. its got...something going for it.

...ive noticed im better off not using any demons until the boss fights though, so each dungeon is traversed with just me, nemissa and maybe invader zim, if he feels like not being shit.

Ha! Found it! Remember when I said that I discovered as /smtg/ that the Aeon Genesis translations of the first two games supposedly has a Chaos bias? Here is the scene that was cited as an example. In the AG translation, Gotou says he didn't order the Heroine's execution, and his subordinates snuck it by him without him noticing. In the official translation, the order came directly from him; AG deliberately changed it to make Gotou look better.

Fascinating, huh?

I don't know if its worth getting Persona 5 for the PS 3, since they're probably just going to release an updated version for the PS 4 with a bunch of extra stuff.

Or the Vita.

Or go the P3P route and throw it on the 3DS or Vita.

I sure said that!

The updated rerelease will be like 2 years down the road though.

Re: SMTII Neutral: Despite being Neutral aligned (and supposed to parallel the SMT Guy), Daleth has more or less the same role in the Chaos route as he does in Neutral, and shows up in the Chaos ending, not the Neutral ending.

In fact, if I recall, none of the named characters show up in the Neutral ending, not even ones who it'd make sense to have, like Daleth or Masakado. It's weird.

So, anyone taken a look at Dragons Crown? I know it has nothing to do with SMT (in theory, for all I know Aleph shows up in the background somewhere), but it's still Atlus at least.

[up]That is disturbing. These people basically say "yeah, society sucks, so let's just go back to how things were when we were murdering each other for meat and skins."

While the Neutral endings have always resulted in the additional problems that the next games have to deal with, at least there's still a possibility for the next game to even happen. Law and Chaos endings tend to be, well, endings.

I'm vaguely interested in it, though the character designs are a little... Erm...

But honestly, while Catherine is at least debatable part of the series, Dragon's Crown definitely hasn't got anything to do with SMT.

I sure said that!

Atlus published Dragon's Crown, but the game was created by Vanillaware. I've heard nothing but good things about Vanillaware so I'm keeping Dragon's Crown on my to play list for when I have money to spare. Catherine was made by Atlus but isn't a part of the Shim Magami Tensi franchise or universe, though people like to pretend they are. Since the subject of games Atlus has published came up may I recommend Demon's Souls to you? It's a great game.

Oh, well, I don't have a PS 3 or PSP so that takes Dragon's Crown right off the list. I could have sworn that they published/developed another 3DS game recently that wasn't part of SMT.

And I'll stay away from Demons Souls, thank you. I've played its Spiritual Successor, Dark Souls. I like the idea of my death being caused by poor strategy and not because the game decided "you know what? Fuck you." Even SMT at its Nintendo Hardiest can be beaten with a good enough strategy (after several hundred tries, of course, but that's not really the strategy's fault).

[up]You are thinking of Etrian Odissey 4.

While we are still talking about Games Atlus developed... I personally recomend the Trauma Center series, the first game and it's sequel are for the DS. While most of the other ones, (Including a remake of the original) are for the Wii.

They are all very good games.

Which strategy? "Die a few thousand times so that you can learn the boss' tells and timing precisely?"

That's not really a "strategy," so much as it is "just keep doing what you're doing until you get it right."

At least, that was my impression of the game.

its not like you can learn smt bosses details without fighting them in the dark first, unless resorting to a guide first.

they're both trial and error, just one's more reliant on skill and the other on preparation.

Here's some of the strategies for the worst bosses. Capra Demon: Run right to the stairs at the start and kill off the dogs as they come up. Four Kings: Stay close to them and tank through their hits. Ornstein and Smough: Keep them separated from each other by abusing the environment.

Yeah, but I prefer going the "preparation" route, which is strategy, rather than the "skill" route, which is tactics. Strategy's what you have going into the fight. Tactics are what the fight inevitably devolves into. I prefer the one, because I'm used to the other not being enough for victory. [up] Those are tactics, because they can only be implemented once you get into the fight. Strategies would be "need More Dakka."

And as I said, my impression of the games. I'm not saying anyone else is stupid for liking them; I just don't.

@ Otherarrow: Granted, /smtg/ is still 4chan, but they didn't seem to be joking; one person in this discussion even said that for SMTI, someone compared the official English script from the IOS version and the AG script to the Japanese script, and the official translation, with the more negative portrayal of Chaos, was more accurate, so you can't even argue retcon.

im honestly surprised theres a chaos bias in smt1, considering chaos seemed the least reasonable option of the three there.

...well no, i can believe theres a chaos bias in smt1, because ive heard AG is somewhat infamous for suspect translation and ego boosting lies

rather im not seeing how the bias really ammounted to much. chaos doesnt really look "better" from what i can understand. i mean, takeshi himself is unlikable enough in te AG translation. what- is he a complete monster in reality? gotoh went from being an asshole to being an incompetant and irresponsible asshole, and its not like yuuji ended up being portrayed negatively so he still ends up far and away ahead of takeshi on the "alignment heroes im likely to listen to" list.

This is why I'm very anxious for when and if the IOS version of II is officially translated; if AG really does deliberately fudge their own translations, who knows what's actually in that one?

I do wonder if they did romhack the game to reassemble the endings so that the Chaos ending is so blatantly good.

I think we'd have noticed by now if they did something as visual as that though.

[up] I doubt they'd go that far, but I could believe they re-edited some dialogue here and there, to make Lucifer more noble, the ending more hopeful, or what have you.

Sorry for the double-post, but I had a thought. In light of SMT X FE, which SMT and FE characters would you expect to get along? Some of my picks:

  • Mastema and Naesala. A gimme, in my opinion. They could have smug conversations about all they have in common, such as backstabbing, crow motifs, taste in women...
  • Walter and Vaike. Could bond over manliness and pride in being a commoner. Walter might also get along with Hector, depends on whether or not he'd hate him for being nobility scum.
  • Dheginsea I think would fit in with the more well-intentioned corners of the Law faction in general.
  • Isabeau and Sumia: Kinda geeky, kinda awkward, but dependable in a fight and with a transparent crush on their leading man.
  • Tayama and Lekain. Be very afraid.
  • Zelenin's basically a more cynical take on the Herons as it is, but would she fit in with them? I have a feeling they'd object to how she uses her powers.
