"The Beatles are the definitive 60s band."

Once they hit America, the 50's had ended and the 60's began. (Culturally)

"Queen made the best glam-rock."

I was never a fan of David Bowie.

"Black Sabbath invented heavy metal."

Although really it was neither group, but other, more obscure groups. Zep had only like three real metal songs.

"Iron Maiden defined 80s metal."

Metallica had more impact in the early 90's than 80's.

"David Lee Roth was the best Van Halen singer."

He's what I like to call "Terrigood"

"Ozzy Osbourne was the best Black Sabbath singer."

Dio is a better singer overall, but Ozzy IS Sabbath.

"Eric Clapton is better at blues-rock than the other guy."

Jimi Hendrix would tell you that if he were still around somehow.

"Motley Crue is the definitive Sunset Strip band."

I don't associate GNR with the Sunset Strip, and Poison is too dated and something of a joke thanks to Bret being on VH 1 so often.

  • 1. The Beatles are what everyone thinks of when you say sixties.
  • 2. David Bowie, I like Queen better, but I don't really associate them with glamrock.
  • 3. Can't say, though for what it's worth I like Zeppelin better. Black Sabbath have more metal songs, sure, but I'm not sure who started it.
  • 4. Iron Maiden
  • 5. Haven't listened to enough Van Halen to have an opinion
  • 6. Ozzy Osbourne is the one I think of with Black Sabbath
  • 7. Eric Clapton, because Hendrix wasn't as bluesy
  • 8. Motley Crue, though I like Guns N Roses better.

  1. The Beatles
  2. David Bowie. Going with what the above poster said.
  3. Black Sabbath. Led Zeppelin helped create the genre, but they were more hard rock than metal.
  4. Iron Maiden. It's the first to come to mind for me.
  5. David Lee Roth. Hagar isn't a bad singer, but Roth pretty much defines the band.
  6. Can't answer, since I haven't heard enough Dio-era Sabbath to do so.
  7. Eric Clapton. He's the first guitarist that comes to mind when I think of blues rock.
  8. Guns N Roses. Same reason as number 7.

7. Jimi Hendrix
8. Poison

Cheating on a few counts, I know. Sue me.

The Doors are the definitive '60s band. (As for the eternal Beatles-Stones debate, I'm more of a Stones fan myself, but I recognise that the Beatles were much more groundbreaking and influential)
David Bowie made the best glam-rock. (I'm a much bigger fan of Queen than of Bowie, but I don't consider Queen glam-rock at all)
Judas Priest invented heavy metal (counting Sabbath, Led Zep and Deep Purple as Hard Rock rather than metal)
Slayer defined '80s metal.
Ozzy Osbourne was the best Black Sabbath singer.
Jimi Hendrix is better at blues-rock than Eric Clapton.

I don't listen to any Sunset Strip stuff, and I only know one Van Halen album so I can't tell you who the best VH singer was, either.

"___________ are the definitive 60s band." The Beatles

"____________ made the best glam-rock." Queen the only one I've really listened too.

"____________ invented heavy metal." As much as I love Black Sabbath, I'd have to say that is was Judas Priest who defined metal as we know it today, the fast and loud music cut off from it's blues roots.

"_____________ defined 80s metal." Metallica

"_____________ was the best Van Halen singer." DLR

"______________ was the best Black Sabbath singer." Dio was a better singer by far. But I really like the Black Sabbath output from the 70s.

"______________ is better at blues-rock than the other guy." Jimi Hendrix Experience, they just rocked.

"_______________ is the definitive Sunset Strip band." Motley Crue

I'm not actually a fan of classic rock, but I'll give my opinion anyway.

"The Beatles are the definitive 60s band." No question.

"David Bowie made the best glam-rock." They're about equal in terms of sheer talent, but I feel like Bowie was more glam.

"Black Sabbath invented heavy metal." Though owing a great debt to Zeppelin, among others.

"Iron Maiden defined 80s metal." Much as I prefer Metallica to Iron Maiden (I don't like Maiden at all), I would argue that they were still a bigger '80s band than Metallica was.

"Sammy Hagar was the best Van Halen singer." I hate Roth. Any time I hear him sing, I feel like I need a shower.

"Ozzy was the best Black Sabbath singer." Easily. No question there.

"Eric Clapton is better at blues-rock than the other guy." Jimi was the better guitarist, and Clapton would be the first to admit it. But I would argue Clapton was a much better musician in general.

"Motley Crue is the definitive Sunset Strip band." Much as I love G'n'R, and much as I hate Motley Crue, I think they probably define the Strip better. Though G'n'R was way cooler.

Looking back on my original answers, while I still have to give Guns 'n' Roses the last one—Mötley Crüe are really just to awful—I really didn't give Poison a fair shake. They are an extremely solid band, and while sometimes silly, they basically invented (and gave a name to) black metal... yet it is this very fact that keeps them from being "definitive" in that very (dubious) category: They're important as genre pioneers, not as flagship leaders.

"___________ are the definitive 60s band."

The Beatles. They set the stage really for a good deal of 60s rock.

"____________ made the best glam-rock."

Probably David Bowie. Queen encompasses a bit more than Glam.

"____________ invented heavy metal."

Black Sabbath is one of the first bands that really had songs that we would now recognize as metal. As influential as Led Zeppelin are, I really can't think of any songs of theirs that really sounds like Metal.

"_____________ defined 80s metal."

Iron Maiden. A good deal of the bands that came out in the eighties were following their lead. Metallica's influence wouldn't really be felt until the nineties.

"_____________ was the best Van Halen singer."

Eh. Their both good as far as I'm concerned.

"______________ was the best Black Sabbath singer."

Dio's a vastly superior singer, but most of Sabbath's best known songs were from the Ozzy era.

"______________ is better at blues-rock than the other guy."

Hard to say. I'm not really sure.

"_______________ is the definitive Sunset Strip band."

Guns n' Roses had a stronger blues influence and than the other Sunset Strip bands. So they can't really be the definitive band of that scene. I think this goes to Motley Crue.
