What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

That's just wrong. And rather confusing. Why would a US border official prevent a Canadian artist from coming into the country or vice versa? I'd expect these shenanigans on the Mexican border, because racism, but the Canadian one?
On this day in 1918, the Red Baron was shot down.
Blog link"Bad to the Bone" was released in 1982. For some reason, I thought it was much older than that.
simple asEh, the entire structure of the song dates back to probably the 20's, so it does have an older feel.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?Anyways, 35 years is pretty old.
In regards to Theatre_Maven_3695's post earlier, we have not made any such decision. It was a proposal that floated around in mod-space after one too many Auto-Erotic Troping issues. Fundamentally, the wiki is supposed to be for fans to write about works they like, not for creators to pimp their work. We would not make any decision along those lines without a lengthy proposal and comment period.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Again, I apologize. As I explained via PM, that was almost entirely caused by a misunderstanding of what I now realize is largely nothing but violent sour grapes from legitimately ousted users and outsiders poisoned by their well (the sort of thing that led Fast Eddie in particular to be tarred with a brush bordering on Godwin's Law at times...trolls on a Roman lead sugar high, you might say). Kind of ironic given recent events, eh?

No. The CANADIAN border patrol did that, not the US.
Oh, that explains it. They didn't want American idiocy polluting the niceness that is Canada.
Apparently, September 23rd of this year is the date of the Rapture. Happy birthday to me! Maybe the Westboro Baptist Church will finally go away!
Blog linkPeople don't get raptured to hell.
LET ME DREAM!
Blog linkWe can't sell our new burgerst at McDonald's yet because they're not programmed into our registers. Meaning we have a whole shitload of vidalia bbq sauce, dijon mustard, grilled onions, crispy onions, guacamole, maple seasoning, and pico de gallo sitting unused at the moment.
Today I found out that my chocolate contains .8% of alcohol per chocolate.
HiVidalia BBQ sauce?

I mean, she is named after a kind of onion.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseAlso, Asian Elephants are more closely related to Mammoths than to African Elephants.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseI've know this for a while, so I'm just offering it as a comment to : Indian elephants are less closely related to African elephants than we are to chimpanzees.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.Africa is more populated than Europe and North America.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.North America has a pretty small population, anyway. Even including the Caribbean, it's a bit over half a billion. It's still more than South America, though.
You could double it and you just might match either China or India. (Alternatively, you can take both Americas as one item and compare them to India or China and you'll be in the same ballpark.)
I've actually met people who thought there are more people in the USA than there are in Europe. I can't even begin to imagine how an adult would be in that situation, but there you go.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur. There is an old Disney cartoon called In the Bag where Smokey the Bear makes a quick cameo that comes right out of nowhere.
I haven't played the particular game that Tango is from, but still... robo kitty. :DMight well be a combination of how one defines Europe (EU members? Cold War NATO-aligned? Everybody up to the Urals?) and the fact that Germany is "only" 80-90 million-ish compared to the US' 320 million.
Nashville has the largest Kurdish population in the US (~11,000).

I know there are a couple of ways to define Europe, but the ambiguities in discussions I've encountered have always been about whether you count all of Russia or just to the Urals, and whether Turkey (and Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan) are included. In some contexts, such a Eurovision and UEFA, Europe also includes Israel; but that's probably not intended as a position that's based only on geography.
I've never encountered a definition of Europe that didn't include (say) Estonia or Romania.
Also, even if you don't include Russia (any part of it) or Turkey as part of Europe, it's still got a bigger population than North America.
I'm just going to assume that anyone who thinks the US has more people than Europe has only looked at maybe 1 or 2 European countries and figured the rest of the continent is just a desert, or something. That would be comparable to thinking that 90% of the population of the US live in California or New York, but there you go.
I mean, to be honest I've also met people who didn't know there are more Portuguese speaking people in South America than there are in Europe. (I'm not even making that up.)
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.North America has more undeveloped forest land than Africa.
I find the UK kind of confusing. There are tons of athiests there due to an focus of scientific education yet its run by a kingdom that decrees the Crown was given from God.
For decades, Canadian and US artists have had trouble crossing the border into the other country because it is against the laws of both to work while abroad, even if the artist is not paid. Of course it also depends on the mood and general beliefs of whatever border official happens to check you, as this doesn't always happen. This has consistently been a thorn in comic conventions' sides because it results in guests announcing they can't get into the country in time for the convention, at the last minute. Most recently, a Canadian Menage A 3 creator and Archie comic artist could not make it to C 2 E 2 in Chicago due to this very policy, even though hundreds of other guests attend worldwide conventions all the time, and now she isn't certain she can even visit the US anymore.
