What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

Piper Curda was in a Christian movie called Magazine Missionaries a while ago. I can't find anything about it on IMDb, but they have a few screenshots.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.Yishan is Chinese and part of the Paypal Mafia. As in this whole entire time I am reading his name right.
I am apparently the only person on the planet who can't get into Sturgill Simpson's music. I just find him too much of a Mind Screw.
And the words "mind screw" and "Country Music" do not usually go together.
Thing I didn't know until recently: somebody named "Sturgill Simpson" exists.
I have to return some videotapes. My WallKickin' It has been cancelled.
Peace is the only battle worth waging. The guy who works nightshift at the convenience store by my house has no fucks to give (in a good but jarring way).
I have to return some videotapes. My WallEinstein was a socialist.

Does anyone know about the 'Years of Lead'? I just read about them; they were apparently a time of socio-political turmoil in Italy during the 70s, but there's some details that need clarifying, particularly, why they're called 'The Years of Lead'?
Because Italy was struck by waves of violent terrorist activism, both from the Far Right and Far Left.
The lead here stands for, y'know... bullets.
The Great Northern Threadkill. But what exactly caused it? was it really espionage and secret operations by both sides of the Cold War?
I wouldn't say espionnage and secret operations where a cause of the years of lead. A factor and an element, certainly, but not the root of the violences.
Why it happened seems to me like it would be a complex question to answer. There's most likely a wide array of factors at work here, and I sadly don't feel all that qualified and informed to explain it to anybody.
The Great Northern Threadkill.Someone should make a movie about it, or at least set during the period
There's a very long answer to this question, but Italy became a battleground for left-wing and right-wing forces because of where it is in Europe, and how disaffected many of the more right-wing groups were with the state of Italy, given how for some time it was a fascist state and yet collapsed.
Now, you have to imagine where Italy is, in the context of the Cold War. Left-wing groups, especially Leninist and Trotskyist ones, were being sponsored by the KGB in various ways, but some also appeared and were independent in many ways.
Combine the two, and you have a recipe for a battleground between two particular factions - the still quite strong fascist groups, and the sponsored Leninist groups, and no clear winner on either side.
"Did you expect somebody else?" I did study one for Secondary School English, but I can't remember it.
Also, I'm still kinda mad we did an Italian film for English class.
Yamuni is an arabic last name.
Also why is Paypal a mafia?
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesA lot of former Paypal employees went on to found companies like Space "X", Tesla, and Youtube
Wasn't YouTube founded by a former Facebook employee?
Peace is the only battle worth waging.American Football is called such, not because you use your feet to kick the ball, but because it's played on foot.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseMaybe he could've been both a former Facebook employee AND a former Paypal employee.
Who said Youtube was founded by one person?
Well this is certainly news to me
