What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

In the main Marvel Comics Universe, there is a village in Bolivia populated entirely by clones of Hitler. Every man, woman and child is a clone of Hitler, with all of Hitler's memories.
They're constantly attacking their neighbours for Lebensraum.
Dr Pepper jellybeans are a thing.
Peace is the only battle worth waging. All the women?
How is that even possible, and why don't they firebomb the place?
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseElephants can get PTSD.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.Well, the males do have a form of winter depression.
I like to keep my audience riveted. I don't know, and it was probably some Neo-Nazi's experiment.
Then again, it was the same comic that gave us Red Shirt the Uber-Henchman and the Minions International Liberation Front.

They do have medals for almost, and they're called silver! They're planning to make a movie out of The Last of Us.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Pinnacle island's annual rainfall is 2800mm. Yes, I finally found what is required by my assignment! Hold on, let me just check the citation.
There is no citation.
Well fudge.
Why are you doing a report in Pinnacle Island? Does it have to do with sea turtles?
There are those that think that the song When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again is a twisting of the song Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye. However from what I can find the former was out some four years when the latter was released. Apparently the latter was thought of as a parody back in the day.
I find this rather annoying as When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again is an old favorite of mine.
Not dead, just feeling like it.It's a biology project on biomes, but we actually have to pick an ecozone. Amazon/Africa/Russia/coral reef had already been overdone by past classes, so those are off limit. I dropped a pin; Senkaku Island that is, since no one liked Asia. I found what ecozones Senkaku belongs to on Wikipedia, but there is no citation. There is research paper on the faunas, but it is in Japanese. Gonna try my luck at JSTOR on Tuesday.
A gorilla's penis is only an inch and a half long. Todd in the Shadows wasn't kidding.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.Oh. I was thinking of Ascension Island
Hugo Chavez became President of Venezuela in 1999.
Which is weird to me because he always seemed to me like a remnant of the Cold War.
MAD was cancelled to make room for Steven Universe.
Dammit! I thought I was just too busy and kept missing the new episodes. I had enough reasons to hate SU anyway...
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerYou hate Steven Universe? You are dead to me.
I hate it when a network makes NO announcements when a show is canned.
MAD got canceled? Hallelujah!
Dang. I really liked the show. I didn't watch it much after a while, but it was hilarious. Some pretty good gags. I like the one with Swearicus. XD
Eh it's just as well I guess. Aside from spotting great voice actor cameos (sometimes poking fun at themselves), MAD's joke weren't ever funny.
The pipes that the ancient Romans used for indoor plumbing were made of lead. Which probably contributed more to their decline than things like not stoning homosexuals. In your face, 700 Club.
If u watched last night's COSMOS, lead is actually more harmful to humans than anyone thought, and only in the last decade or so have people become more aware of its problems.
El Goonish Shive is still going on.
