Just finished Chaos Head. For all the hate this show gets, I actually found it to be, if not exceptional, then at least perfectly watchable entertainment. The animation quality wasn't great, but it had better writing, more likeable characters and a more satisfying conclusion than many animes I've seen. Also, I thought the art style was great.

Next up is Princess Resurrection. This one's been on my PTW queue for a long time, ever since I heard that it was like Rosario + Vampire but better and with less pantsu and more chainsaws. If it can deliver that, I'll be happy; I can't say I'm expecting anything amazing.

[up]If you watched the R+V anime... you should probably know it's not a very good adaptation and the manga is quite a bit better. Particularly near the end, and in the second season.

[up][up] The problem with Chaos;Head is that is a bad adaptation. It has good ideas and hints of character depth but I could never care for how they came out. Steins:Gate shows how this could have been done: two cours and a lot of episodes where little happens but the cast is shown in all their subtleties. Also, there's the generic character art. It doesn't work in a show that is making a point on how an otaku is locking himself away with a fantasy waifu.

Also fair warning about Princess Resurrection — it's very 90s in animation quality, particularly the OV As, and the TV series ends at a very VERY early part of the manga, before any of the massive time-traveling shenanigans occur.

Chaos Head was already a terrible VN, so being a terrible adaptation should be like multiplying two negatives together.

Mhm. Methinks 'adding two negatives' was the expression you wanted there, Arha.

No, that's exactly what I was getting out. They cancel each other out, therefore Chaos Head anime must have been amazing.

It was watchable but still pretty mediocre

I have a question about Diabolik Lovers that has tormented me for a while.

That it got a second season is not too surprising, since these shows are loss leaders for the genuinely valuable goods and a small but dedicated fandom is enough to keep them going, no matter how low the ratings.

But I still cannot begin to explain how in the bloody depths of heck it got an English dub.

Is that the one with the werewolves?

Makes more sense than AKB00-bloody-48, in any case.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki is getting a 4th season. Given how the third season ended, I'm not sure they have anywhere to go...

Reymma: Maybe it hás something to do with the fans of the original (apparently much superior) VN?

[up] It must, because this is really an advertisement for the VN, but given how minor their overseas market is I'm surprised they thought it was worthwhile.

[up][up][up][up] No, AKB0048 getting a dub made commercial sense. Idol anime sell overseas, and even though it is likely less than a percent of the home market it justifies the cost of a dub. Besides, I can see AKB0048 being shown on a cable channel. Diabolik Lovers would not be shown if the distributor paid for it.

It's vampires, by the way. Think of it as Twilight with more flavours of Edward and some self-awareness of how abusive their relationship is.

What makes Idol anime sell overseas if I may ask?

They tend to be a big hit in places like Italy and Latin America, the same places that Magical Girl is big at.

In the US, though? The only one I can think of that made waves over here was Love Live.

Besides, I've said it before and I'll say it again - almost anyone that would watch AKB 0048 would watch it subbed. Or were there more people willing to watch it dubbed than I realize?

I watched some of it dubbed. Not a great dub, but it was better than having to keep my eyes focused on the bottom of the screen all the time. There were more visually pleasing things going on.

As a snarky anime reviewer once said: "Media Blasters — purveyors of fine pornography!"

At least they're making an effort to get titles out dubbed again, even if they are ecchi.

Are there cases of a manga-and-anime-adaptation pair where an anime decides to change something, and later that detail comes up or affects the manga, such that it becomes really difficult for the anime to follow the manga because of it?

Marathoned through Sore Ga Seiyuu over the weekend, and being as old as I am, it reminded me immediately of REC... except we apparently don't have a page for the REC manga at all. Huh.
