That Su-35 is a hell of a thing.

Thank god those engines need so much maintenance. I really don't wanna think about what it would mean if those things were widespread.

Oh really when?

^ Air combat would look like it does in Stealth.

Neat plane. Still I thought how they got their RC Craft to have the swiveling motors was pretty neat.

If someone in their garage can pull that off, where is the real one failing?

Aside from the whole MIC "milk the DoD for as much cash as possible" thing.

"Yup. That tasted purple."

It does actually lift off and land though. Just horribly expensive and a bit too complex for comfort.

[up] Wouldn't the square cube law actually benefit the lifting surfaces due to them being mostly flat?

I mean I get the body gets much bulkier, but shouldn't the wings preform better?

Is the RC also using the same materials for the wings at least?

I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.

Nope. Styrofoam. The RC craft can use cheaper and lighter materials because they don't need to be warplanes.

So the square cube law doesn't apply then, because the full-scale model isn't made of styrofoam...

What a brilliant solution. All future planes will be Styrofoam prop lanes. No RCS and they are cheap ultra lights. :P

Well... They could probably be built with fuselages and wing assemblies made out of matrixes of carbon fibre encased in ceramic composite foam. Considering foam technology is going leaps and bounds at the moment. I think that may end up with planes that have the RCS of a gnat's naughty bits.

^ And then the first bird they run into causes the plane to disintegrate. For the birds are angry. Angry birds, fear them, respect them.

[up][up]So we have aircraft with virtually no RCS but they're made of foam.

Sounds like trained surface to air interceptor falcons are going to be the future of anti air warfare.

Gonna be like WW 1 all over again.

Current ceramic composite foams are pretty robust stuff - they make high-end yachts out of something very similar, and no-one's telling me the sea's a kind mistress. It's just a question of using existing technology better, and mankind's pretty good at that.

Schedule slip over, the French have confirmed that the flaperon did belong to MH370.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Indonesia selects Su-35 to meet air combat requirement

The Indonesian Ministry of Defence (Mo D) has selected the Sukhoi Su-35 'Flanker-E' multirole combat aircraft to replace the Indonesian Air Force's (TNI-AU's) ageing Northrop F-5E Tiger II fighters, Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said on 3 September.

Ryacudu said in comments published by state-run news agency Antara that the Mo D has "agreed to buy a squadron of Su-35s" to replace the F-5Es, which entered TNI-AU service in 1980 and are expected to be withdrawn from service by the end of the decade.

The programme represents the first export order of the Su-35. The Russian Air Force has ordered 48 of the type, with deliveries commencing in December 2012.

RAF's second Rivet Joint ready for action: ZZ665 is here.

The arrival of the second aircraft happened seven months ahead of schedule and the Ministry of Defence says it “will be deployable on operations within a matter of weeks”. A first aircraft “is currently employed alongside other RAF units in the fight against ISIL supporting operations in Iraq and Syria”, it adds.

“Since delivery of the first aircraft last year, over 60 improvements have been incorporated into the second aeroplane, ranging from upgrades to the aircraft’s mission systems to engine improvements providing increased fuel efficiency and durability,” the MoD says. The RAF’s lead example, ZZ664, is to later “undergo an upgrade programme to bring the aircraft in line with the improvements made on the second”, it adds.

The final aircraft to be delivered under the roughly £650 million ($988 million) Airseeker programme will be handed over during 2017, following its conversion from a surplus KC-135 tanker by US-based L-3 Communications in Greenville, Texas.

Describing the role of the SIGINT platform, the MoD says: “The Airseeker not only gathers data and vital intelligence using advanced sensor technology, but it is also able to carry out onboard analysis and distribute the information to be exploited by assets on the ground via its high-tech communications suite.”

According to data released by the MoD, each of the RAF’s RC-135Ws can operate with a crew of two pilots, one navigator and up to 25 mission crew. The type can be operated up to an altitude of 50,000 ft, it says.

Who are Indonesia going to be using their new Super Flankers against? If they haven't a defined enemy they're thinking they are going to be needing to confront it's just an exercise in really expensive willy waving when they've so much other shit to sort out. Like not burning down all their forests and making the rest of South East Asia choke on the smoke, for example.

Can they actually afford them? Those aren't exactly cheap planes.

And what about the extensive maintenance they need? Do they actually have the know how and stuff to do it or will they need to bring Russians in and have them do it for them?

[up] The Indonesians already operate 11 Su-30MK and 5 Su-27SK, so the TNI-AU do know what to expect.

[up]As much as a beat up FA, I agree, this isn't anything special, it's a dead end. Something was wrong with this Super Hornet variant and so it ends it's career in the boneyard. I'm surprised it wasn't broken up. Then again it might be saved for latter, if some team in the future can fix it's problems.

All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be on The First 48
