Got a peasant with 80-something kills under his belt. And he's not a vampire or a were-whatever. At least the "Nickname was cursed by Urist McGod" method isn't revealing it.

I have a new candidate for the dumbest non-instant-or-guaranteed-death start ever.

As has become something of a habit of mine, I started a new fort and started digging, with my stonecrafter/expedition leader making goblets. When a grey langur man pilfered a masterwork, he threw two tantrums and then went insane.

No, this time they're langur men.

Which is rather like a rabid pit bull man from the perspective of an early-game fort.

Okay, so. I'm hoping to build a mine track from my aboveground village (at z level 99) to my magma forges way down at z level -17. I have basically a straight up/down staircase to it, so... Any advice?

From, or to and from?

The answer to that means a lot. (Specifically: if it only needs to go down with efficiency, it can run on gravity and be kicked or ridden down, and then pushed back up. If it needs to go up quickly as well, you need room for rollers.)

First up though, I'd like to tackle the elves. The main features here'll be multi-tile trees (including roots and properly-sized mushrooms), fruit, flowers, climbing and jumping.

Finally, Jumping. Now we'll be able to explore properly.

Jumping means goblins won't be held back by 1 tile deep moats and 1 tile high walls anymore. Gotta work on my defenses now.

I foresee a day when every fort is just covered in weapon traps on every surface.

If tunneling creatures turn up with TRAPAVOID suicide is probably your best bet.

Oh hey they jump your moat. Dig the moat right next to a wall. Nothing to jump to. Or leave a ledge and coat it in weapon traps. Or make a ledge of a bridges and let them jump on that and then pull it out from under them. Jump on that. :3 You guys aren't thinking dorfy enough.

Before I start up a new fort (and possibly blog it), let's boot up Legends mode and see what notable things have occurred in the first century of Atilelina ("The Absolute Land"):

- Age of Legends began in the year 90.
- Most of the territorial conflict seems to be happening in the northeastern region. The Cudgel of Gleaming (dwarven), the Tin Boot (dwarven), the Noiseless Nation (human), the Uncertain Confederation (human), and the Umbral Wraith (goblin) are all vying for control. Meanwhile in the southwest, the Maw of Skies (elven) have recently expanded enough to threaten the Wing of Reverences (elven) and the Ignorant Thief (goblin).
- I like the name they gave to the first temple built in the world: the Cardinal Cathedral. Naturally, it was razed in the year 47.
- In the first few years, four demons escaped the underworld— three-eyed monster Momuz*

, yellow brute Beru*, anteater monster Obi*, and ape monster Dudgoth*. (Interestingly, both who took over a human civ are still alive, and both who took over a goblin civ fell victim to regicide.)
- Of the four megabeasts, only the dragon Amayi Thasanelare Thali Lawe remains. The hydra, the roc, and the bronze colossus were each struck down. Most if not all of the titans/forgotten beasts still roam the world.

I guess goblins are more likely to resort to Klingon Promotion than humans are, and enough goblins can eventually drag down even a powerful demon.

[up] Then the book will choose you. Fun will be had.

But anyway, some historical figure highlights:
- "In the early autumn of 32, Onget (dwarven goddess of fire, volcanoes, and earth) cursed Dodok Vesselwheel to assume the form of an ass-like monster every full moon in Senseurns." Oh... oh, my.
- "In the midsummer of 31, Damid (dwarven goddess of murder, death, and suicide) received the worship of the consort of the backward creature Asmel Stakeinched."
- A fascinating elven religion. "Yawo was a force which was said to permeate the Forests of Truth. Yawo was associated with rivers and nature." No other gods, no pantheons, only Yawo.
- In the year 2, the first queen of the Wing of Reverences was abducted and transformed into a shadow horror spouse. Masami Sparklemurders still roams the world, a hated foe of her former elven kingdom.
- There are a few non-humanoid gods. One dwarven pantheon has a cave swallow goddess (Anan, goddess of caverns and mountains), another has a fire imp (Alron, deity of volcanoes and earth), and a human pantheon has a cave spider (Wimad, god of fishing, fish, and water).
- Four dwarven gods: Asiz (god of light), Anan (god of darkness), Akim (goddess of persuasion, water, nature, and weather), and Aran (god of courage). They're all lined up in a row; it's actually sort of interesting.
- The first general of the Tin Boot died a peaceful death of old age. The first queen was not so lucky— devoured by a were-lizard.
- Human god Otsu: associated with deformity, disease, blight, death, and games.
